Julian opened his eyes before the alarm could sound.
The ceiling looked the same as it had the night before, but the weight behind his eyes was heavier. He lay still for a moment, the pillow cool beneath his head, his body warm and restless in a way that did not feel like ordinary fatigue. It felt as though the night had continued beneath the surface, as if something had been moving quietly even while he was supposed to be resting.
He pushed the covers aside and sat up, slower than usual, his shoulders carrying a dull ache that had nothing to do with the bed. For a second, he stayed there, elbows resting on his thighs, his gaze unfocused as he tried to settle into the morning.
It didn't settle.
Julian swung his legs over the side and stood. His feet met the floor, grounding him just enough to move forward. He walked to the bathroom, splashed water on his face, and stared at his reflection.
