Chapter 20 - — “And That… In Itself Is an Answer”

Silence settled.

Heavy… steady—

as if it had chosen the air itself, not the ground.

The cup in Sylis's hands remained still—

untouched.

As for Thorn—

He sat across from the King,

his back straight… without rigidity,

as if sitting had done nothing to lessen his presence.

And on the other side—

The King.

Unchanged.

His position unmoved… even while seated.

---

"…Or was it your decision?"

His tone did not rise.

But it… narrowed.

As though the question had not been asked—

but placed.

---

Thorn did not answer immediately.

His fingers rested lightly on the rim of the cup—

without lifting it.

Then he spoke:

"Your command… was the foundation."

A pause.

"And what I did… ensured its continuation."

---

No one moved.

Not even the faint sound of spoons—

was heard.

Then he added, more precisely:

"The circumstances… required accuracy."

---

"…Thorn."

Her voice came low—

soft at the edges… yet clear.

This time—

Her gaze lifted to him.

Not a direct objection…

but not agreement, either.

---

He did not turn.

But his grip on the cup… tightened slightly.

"There is no need for concern."

He said it calmly,

as if speaking to her alone, despite the distance.

Then—

He finally lifted the cup.

A small sip.

"Everything… remains under control."

---

The King's gaze slipped between them.

Slowly.

It paused… at Sylis's hands.

Then—

at the untouched cup.

Then—

returned.

"I see."

---

He exhaled softly.

As though something had been confirmed.

"It seems… some decisions—"

A pause.

"—are not made with precision alone… but with motive."

---

This time, the silence—

was not mere waiting.

But observation.

---

In the background—

Alex stood still,

but his gaze was not.

It flickered briefly to the cup in Thorn's hand…

then to Sylis.

And he noted.

---

As for Marrow—

He did not move.

But his eyes…

missed nothing.

---

And within that quiet—

The tea remained warm.

But—

no one was truly drinking it.

The silence remained…

tightened this time,

as if waiting… for something specific.

Then—

Sylis moved.

Slowly.

There was no haste in her motion…

nor hesitation.

She placed the cup before her at last—

gently.

Without a sound.

Then she lifted her gaze.

To the King.

"Your Majesty… if I may."

Her voice was calm,

clear without demanding attention—

yet it took it.

She paused briefly.

Not searching for words—

but choosing them.

"I understand that this summons… was not without reason."

Her gaze did not waver.

"But I would like to understand—"

A slight pause.

Not weakness…

but control.

"What it is you require of me… specifically."

---

No one moved.

But—

the stillness shifted.

Alex's gaze—

lifted to her immediately.

This time… without hiding it.

As for Marrow—

his expression did not change.

But his focus… deepened.

And Thorn—

did not look at her.

Yet his posture… was no longer quite the same.

---

As for the King—

he did not answer at once.

He looked at her.

For a long moment.

Not as before—

not an examination.

But… consideration.

Then—

he leaned back slightly.

Calmly.

"A direct question."

A pause.

Light… but deliberate.

"And few… ask it this way."

His gaze did not leave her.

"Especially… in your position."

---

He held her gaze.

"Especially… in your position."

A pause.

Then—

"But… since you have asked."

His fingers moved slowly along the armrest.

A faint rhythm… barely visible.

"Allow me to be… sufficiently clear."

A short silence.

Then—

"I did not summon you… because you are the Baron's wife."

His gaze slipped—

briefly—

toward Thorn.

Then returned.

"Nor because you are part of an outcome… that was not anticipated."

A pause.

Longer, this time.

"But because you—"

He did not finish immediately.

As if the word… required precision.

"—appeared… at a timing that does not permit coincidence."

The silence that followed—

was not empty.

But filled… with what remained unsaid.

"And that—"

he added calmly,

"—is not something I ignore."

Then he leaned slightly forward.

Not a threat.

But a measured approach.

"So, Lady Sylis—"

His tone did not change.

But it… sharpened.

"I will not ask who you are."

A pause.

His gaze steady.

"But—"

A moment.

"I wish to see—

how you choose to be."

---

Then—

silence.

Short.

But enough.

"Some…"

he said quietly,

"surprise me."

His gaze drifted—

slowly—

toward Thorn.

It lingered there… longer than it should have.

"Even after… a long time."

Then it returned to Sylis.

As though nothing had happened.

"And you—"

A pause.

"—are not easily predicted."

---

She did not answer immediately.

Not hesitation—

but choice.

As always.

Sylis lowered her gaze briefly,

as if arranging something unseen.

Then—

she looked up at him again.

"And is that… what concerns Your Majesty?"

Her voice—

calm.

But the question…

was not simple.

She did not wait for a response.

"Or is it that what cannot be predicted…"

A slight pause.

"—is precisely what you seek?"

---

This silence—

was different.

Alex stilled.

Subtly… but truly.

Marrow—

did not move.

But his eyes—

narrowed slightly.

And Thorn—

remained as he was.

But—

the quiet around him… had shifted.

---

As for the King—

he did not smile.

But—

he did not deny it either.

He looked at her.

This time—

with something closer to… interest.

Then—

"You know how to answer…"

he said calmly,

"without offering an answer."

A pause.

"And that… in itself is an answer."

---

"And that… in itself is an answer."

Silence settled.

This time—

it was not a test.

But… a result.

Sylis moved slightly.

As if about to say something—

"Your Majesty—"

But—

"I believe…"

Thorn's voice came.

Calm.

And precisely timed.

He did not look at Sylis.

But directly at the King.

"That you have obtained what you wanted."

---

The silence—

shifted.

Alex's gaze lifted immediately.

Marrow—

did not move.

But his attention… redirected entirely.

As for the King—

he did not seem displeased.

Rather—

more interested.

"And do you believe that… Thorn?"

---

"I believe—"

Thorn paused briefly.

"That you do not summon people…"

A fleeting glance.

Light.

But intentional—

"…simply to observe."

---

Silence filled the room once more.

But this time—

it was not only heavy…

but poised—

on the edge of something yet to happen.
