Chapter 358 - Chapter 156: The Reluctant Landlord

The bonfire had settled into steady coals by the time Liam sent Jade out.

He hadn't announced it. He was sitting with his back against a tree, Shizuku's head resting on his thigh, her book propped on her chest and her breathing the slow, deliberate kind that meant she was actually reading and not sleeping. He kept one hand moving absently at her jaw and the back of her neck, and with the other he did nothing visible. An aura current slipped from his body, went into the ground without disturbing the surface, and Jade was somewhere under the dark forest floor.

The trees in his En had been moving for the last twenty minutes. Slowly, deliberately, in the way things move when they think they're not being watched.

Jade surfaced between two of them.

She appeared the way she always appeared: without warning, without sound, her jade-green face composed and unhurried. The trees in her immediate vicinity stopped moving with the abruptness of someone caught in the middle of something.

She walked around them. One circuit, two. Then she reached into her sleeve for the Yin Nen Sword and placed the blade against a trunk.

Nothing happened.

The blade passed into the wood and drew out exactly nothing, because there was nothing to draw out. No aura in the trees, no trace of a Nen construct embedded in the grain, no residue of an ability that had been applied to them. They were, by every test the sword could run, ordinary trees.

Ordinary trees that moved when no one was watching.

Jade retreated into the ground without expression.

In Liam's En, the trees resumed their slow relocation, exactly as if they'd held their breath until she left.

He considered this for a while. The bone wolves had no aura either. The quicksand had no aura. Nothing on this mountain, as far as he could detect, was operating through Nen. But something was operating.

He knew a creature whose abilities had nothing to do with Nen: the Ferocious Fox. Its transformations were innate, biological, not Nen-derived. The Yin Nen Sword could still extract energy from that, because it was still a living thing. But whatever was moving the trees was registering as genuinely inanimate matter. That required a different category entirely.

He set it aside for now. He had no theory that fit the evidence, and inventing theories without evidence was how people made confident and incorrect conclusions.

Aoi and Akane came back from the treeline dragging a bone wolf.

"Are there seriously no other animals on this mountain?" Aoi said, with the tone of someone who had been quietly hoping for something edible. She dropped the wolf's hindquarters next to the fire. "Just the bone ones."

The bone wolf, which had apparently been playing dead, chose this moment to resume its agenda. It scrambled upright, slammed into Akane's knee, and bolted into the darkness between the trees.

Aoi looked at the retreating shape. She clenched her fist.

Then she swung.

The punch didn't connect with anything in front of her. She was gone before it finished, a brief displacement of air where she'd been standing. Somewhere out in the dark there was a sharp crack, the specific sound of a fist meeting a skull that didn't have a jaw anymore, and then Aoi walked back into the firelight brushing splinters of bone off her knuckles.

"Found something," Liam noted.

"Practice," she said, and sat back down.

Shizuku had not looked up from her book.

Morning. They broke camp efficiently and continued up the mountain.

It took Shizuku approximately forty minutes to notice.

She noticed the way she noticed most things: without commenting on it, filing it away, watching for the pattern to repeat before committing to the conclusion. The path they were on looked like it was heading upward. The elevation they were gaining felt real. But the landscape wasn't changing the way it should, and the peak wasn't getting any closer.

They were circling.

"The path's moving," she said.

"Yes," Liam said.

"For how long?"

"Since yesterday evening, intermittently. More aggressively now."

She closed the research files she'd been reviewing and looked at the mountain.

Gradually, almost as if the mountain had decided that subtlety wasn't working, the terrain became less subtle. The tree cover ended. The ground shifted from damp soil to rock, and the rock was cold, and then they rounded an exposed face and the wind hit them like a door.

The northern flank of the mountain was ice. Properly, completely, year-round ice: the rock sheltered from any warmth, the ridges draped in glacier white, every surface either covered in frozen crust or slick with runoff. It was beautiful in the way that things are beautiful when they're also trying to kill you.

Akane had Nimbus out immediately. Aoi stepped onto a patch of black ice and fell sideways, caught herself on a rock, and did not comment on this.

The terrain began moving in ways that couldn't be attributed to natural geology. A slope that had been traversable tilted away from them at an angle that violated several principles. A ridge that should have provided a route to the summit turned left instead of straight and deposited them at an ice wall. And there, carved into the ice in neat, emphatic characters, was a monument approximately one meter high.

It read: THIS ROAD IS BLOCKED.

Aoi stared at it.

"Is that aimed at us specifically," she said, "or is it general policy?"

Liam and Shizuku opened their En simultaneously, extending as far as the conditions allowed. The ice reflected aura poorly. The range was shortened. But the result was the same as it had been in the forest: nothing. No source, no trace, no signature of a Nen ability anywhere in the vicinity. Whatever was tilting slopes and carving monuments in ice was doing it without producing any detectable aura output.

There was, however, a shape in the rock wall above.

Vague, human-proportioned, and facing toward Akane on the Nimbus with an attitude that suggested it was deciding what to do. It had very distinctive ears, long and upright, projecting from the top of its head.

Jade drifted upward, a current of aura moving toward the wall.

The shape disappeared. Straight back into the rock, no exit, just gone.

"Only one chance at that," Liam said quietly.

He thought for a moment. Then he held out his hand, and Jade reached into her sleeve and produced three small talismans: yellow paper, rose-gold patterns, the characteristic output of the Talisman Sword. Aoi's ability, extracted and stored. One punch to establish contact, then every subsequent strike teleported the user to striking range.

He handed one to Shizuku. One to Akane, who passed it immediately to Aoi. He kept the third.

Aoi looked at it, then at him, then at the ice wall. She understood.

"Go," he said to Akane.

Akane drove Nimbus straight up. Fast, direct, no evasion.

The mountain responded. Every surface in reach began moving: ice shelves dropping, rock formations curling inward, ridge lines bending in directions that should have been structurally impossible. The terrain poured toward the Nimbus cloud like it had a personal grievance. Akane found the gaps and threaded through them, Nimbus flexible and quick, and she shouted something deliberately loud and distracting from up above.

The long-eared figure emerged from the rock wall.

It had its back mostly to Liam. It was focused on the cloud, one arm raised, clearly coordinating the ice and stone response to the Nimbus intrusion.

It started shouting: "Why won't you just go away! You're clearly not welcome here—"

Liam crushed the talisman.

He swung.

For one very strange moment, nothing happened. His fist completed its arc, the aura fired, and he felt the ability find its target and then find nothing, as if the thing in the rock wall had briefly ceased to have a location that could be physically arrived at.

Then it did.

He was there. One meter from the rabbit-eared figure, mid-swing, his fist closing on the small distance between them. He felt the talisman ability resolve at last, a half-second delayed, the teleport completing mid-punch.

The figure squeaked and dropped straight back into the rock.

Behind him, Shizuku's Dragon Fist talisman fired. She had punched toward his original position and tracked forward: the ability found him, pulled her through, and she arrived two meters to his left in a fighting stance.

Above, Akane's Nimbus dissolved as she crushed her talisman. She punched Aoi. Aoi punched the air with her own native ability and vanished, landing next to Shizuku a second later.

Four people. Ice wall. Rabbit-eared entity somewhere in the rock directly in front of them.

"Don't fight!" its voice came from everywhere and nowhere, slightly muffled by solid stone. "Please! Don't fight!"
