Leah sat where she had fallen.
Her legs were stretched out in front of her, unmoving, heels pressed against the ground as if rooted there. Her body hadn't caught up with her return; hadn't accepted it. She remained suspended in that thin space between survival and collapse.
Her hands rested beside her.
Fingers slack.
Trembling.
Her chest rose;
Fell;
Then hitched again, breath still uneven, still recovering from something her body didn't fully understand.
Her eyes were open.
Wide.
But empty of focus.
Shock held her still.
Then....
Thud.
A footstep.
Heavy.
Close.
It echoed through the ground, dull and final, like something inevitable approaching.
Leah didn't react.
Another step.
Thud.
Closer.
The sound pressed into her, but her mind lagged behind it, still caught in fragments of light and screams and falling.
The air shifted.
A presence filled the space in front of her.
Massive.
Wrong.
A low, rising sound began to build;
Not a growl.
Something deeper.
Something that vibrated through bone rather than air.
A roar.
Leah's fingers twitched faintly.
But she still didn't move.
Didn't look up.
The sound grew;
Until it broke.
The creature lunged.
A hand snapped around her throat;
Cold;
Unyielding;
Lifting her from the ground in one violent motion.
Her body jerked upward, her legs dragging for a fraction of a second before leaving the ground completely. Her back arched slightly as the force yanked her into the air, her arms rising instinctively, too late, too weak.
Her breath was cut off instantly.
Her mouth opened;
Nothing came out.
Her hands grabbed at its wrist, fingers tightening, nails pressing against something that didn't feel like flesh.
Her legs kicked once;
Then again;
Slower.
Her head tilted back slightly as her body strained for air that wouldn't come.
The creature's roar exploded again;
Closer....
Louder...
Shaking the space around them as if the sound itself had weight.
Leah's eyes widened;
Then.....
Something shifted.
Slowly....
Her pupils began to roll upward.
Her gaze slipping.
Breaking away from the world in front of her.
And then....
It started.
Black smoke.
Thin at first.
A faint wisp escaping from between her lips.
Then more;
From her nose;
From the corners of her eyes;
Curling upward in slow, unnatural streams.
Her body stiffened.
Her spine arched slightly as the smoke thickened, pouring out of her in heavier strands, coiling around her face before rising into the air above.
The temperature dropped.
The space between her and the creature filled with it;
Dark.
Heavy.
Alive.
Leah's fingers trembled against its arm, her grip loosening as the strength left her completely. Her legs hung motionless now, no longer fighting, no longer reacting.
Her chest;
Still.
No breath.
Only that release.
The smoke pulsed as it rose, thickening, twisting as if guided by something unseen. It gathered between them, drawn toward the creature, responding to it.
The creature leaned closer.
Watching.
Listening.
Its grip remained firm;
Controlled;
Holding her exactly where it wanted.
Leah's pupils disappeared further upward.
Her body gave one last, faint tremor;
Then stilled.
Suspended in its grasp.
Drained.
Leah's pupils rolled upward;
The black swallowing the last trace of her focus;
When....
A flash.
Blinding.
White.
It tore across her vision like lightning splitting open the dark.
The creature reacted instantly.
Its grip tightened;
Then shifted;
Its other arm snapping upward, claws flaring as it tried to intercept;
Too late.
A blade of light struck.
Not metal;
Not entirely;
It looked like a sword, but it burned as it moved, a radiant beam condensed into form. It cut through the mist without resistance and slammed into the creature's arm; the one holding Leah.
The impact cracked through the air.
A sharp, violent sound;
Then the blade kept going.
It pierced through.
Deep.
Burning.
Light spilling outward from the wound as it forced its way through flesh that wasn't meant to be broken.
The creature screamed.
A distorted, furious roar that shook the space around them, its body jerking violently as it tried to pull away;
But the blade didn't stop.
It drove further.
Cutting.
Splitting.
Then....
A second movement.
Faster.
A silhouette burst through the mist.
Not emerging;
Striking.
It moved like a blur; low, precise, deadly.
Horns.
Two sharp curves cutting through the air as the figure closed the distance in an instant. Long hair streamed behind her, dark against the light, her form lean and controlled.
She struck without hesitation.
Claws extended from her hand;
Not crude.
Not wild.
Refined.
Deadly.
They drove straight into the creature's chest.
The impact forced a sound out of it; not just pain, but something deeper, something rupturing inside. The claws sank in, piercing through with brutal precision as the force of her movement carried through its body.
The creature convulsed.
Its grip on Leah faltered.
Then....
The blade of light completed its path.
A clean, unstoppable cut.
The arm holding Leah;
Severed.
Falling away.
The horned figure twisted mid-motion, landing lightly as she pulled her claws free, black blood trailing from them in thin strands before dissolving into the mist.
She moved again instantly.
Jumping upward.
Her body arched through the air as she reached the creature's back, one hand snapping forward to grab its head, fingers locking into place with firm control.
Now visible;
Clearly.
Two horns curving upward from her head.
Long hair flowing freely behind her.
Ears; slightly pointed, sharp, almost elven in shape.
Her skin fair.
Almost like a human .
And her eyes;
Bright.
Blue.
Piercing.
Her armor was minimal but precise; fitted chest plating, reinforced at the knees and forearms, designed for movement rather than weight.
She held the creature steady.
Pinned.
Controlled.
Then...
Her voice.
"Noooooowww."
It rang out smooth;
Elegant;
Almost playful.
As if this moment was something she had been waiting for.
As if the danger meant nothing to her.
The mist shifted again.
Parting.
And another figure emerged.
Not rushing.
Not striking.
Descending.
Slowly.
Deliberately.
He appeared in mid-air, stepping forward as if the space itself allowed him passage. A long cape flowed from his shoulders, moving with a controlled grace, not chaotic like the mist but steady; anchored.
His armor gleamed.
Silver.
Polished.
Chest plate, knee guards, arm guards; each piece refined, crafted, reflecting what little light remained in sharp, clean edges.
His presence;
Calm.
Unshaken.
His face was partially hidden.
A mask.
Half-mask.
It covered from just above the bridge of his nose down across his mouth and jawline, leaving his eyes exposed. The design was smooth but striking; etched with subtle angular patterns that flowed outward from the center, giving it a heroic, almost regal appearance. The lower edge tapered cleanly along his jaw, while the upper edge curved just beneath his eyes, emphasizing their sharpness.
No expression.
Only intent.
In his hand;
The sword.
The same blade of light.
It pulsed once;
Then moved.
Fast.
Decisive.
He closed the distance in a single motion.
The blade arced;
Clean.
Precise.
It cut through the creature's neck as if resistance didn't exist.
A single, fluid strike.
The light didn't flicker.
Didn't slow.
It passed through completely;
And continued just slightly beyond;
Before fading.
For a fraction of a second;
Silence.
Then;
The head separated.
Fell.
Rolling across the ground before coming to a stop.
The horned girl released her grip mid-motion, pushing herself back with a light, controlled jump, landing effortlessly as she turned, her claws lowering.
The black smoke;
Stopped.
Abrrupt.
Unnatural.
Like something had been cut mid-flow.
Leah's body jerked violently in mid-air.
Not falling.
Not held.
Just… suspended.
