Chapter 44 - Chapter Forty-Three: The Last Loyal Man

The estate stood at the summit of a mountain road that appeared on no current navigational chart. The BSAA had not maintained surveillance on it since their post-Wesker sweep in 2009 confirmed nothing of operational significance remained. They had been looking for laboratory infrastructure. What remained was considerably more significant than laboratory infrastructure and was not the kind of thing that showed up on the instruments they had been using to look for it.

The weather above the mountain was the specific violence of a European October that had decided to make a point about the season. Rain in hard horizontal sheets. Thunder every forty seconds with the resonant quality of sound in confined mountain air. Lightning to the south. The stone walls of the estate caught the light and lost it and caught it again.

The same kind of night Albert Wesker had arrived here in 2006. The estate apparently had standards about the weather conditions under which it received consequential visitors.

Alen walked the final approach into the wind with the unhurried quality of a man who had decided decades ago that weather was a logistical consideration rather than a personal experience. The coat's high collar was turned up. The platinum-blonde pompadour was soaked through. Rain ran down the black wraparound sunglasses in steady lines. The herringbone jacket, the turtleneck, the dress trousers and polished shoes — all of it wet, none of it adjusted.

He stood at the main gate. The grounds beyond it half-reclaimed by vegetation. The ironwork intact. The Spencer crest. The specific, heavy quality of something built to last several centuries and succeeding at the project.

He pushed the gate with one gloved hand. It moved on forty years of rust and produced the sound of something that had not been opened from the outside since the BSAA left.

He walked in.

The entrance hall: the great staircase, the five connecting areas, the locked gate to the underground prison ruins. The smell told him more than the architecture — the specific combination of stone and maintenance, old wood treated and not allowed to rot, the quality of a building that someone had been keeping. Not warm. Kept. The labour of a man who had decided that maintaining the building was the last available form of service and had performed it without interruption for nineteen years.

He moved through the dining room, the study, the piano room, the Centaur Corridor — each space catalogued and filed. The Spatial-Phantom Movement at low register. Not the full operational activation with its bioluminescent field effect. Simply the frictionless geometry of someone who could read an unfamiliar space and move through it without announcing himself.

The first Blob came around the corner of the Centaur Corridor with the specific, shambling aggression of a T-Virus host that had been integrated long enough to become something that no longer had a classification that applied to living things. The Leviathan addressed it. One round. The corridor went quiet.

Three more in the east wing passage. Two Blobs and a Cerberus unit, the canine modification long since destabilised into something that moved entirely on residual aggression. The Leviathan addressed all three in sequence. The shots echoed through the stone architecture, passed through the building's walls, reached every room simultaneously.

In the east wing, behind the door that was not in any archived floor plan, an elderly man who had placed those specimens in the corridors himself heard four shots and understood, with the specific precision of someone who had been maintaining this building for nineteen years while waiting for a specific kind of visitor, exactly what those shots meant.

He set down his teacup. He stood. He straightened his vest.

He waited.

The east wing room was warm — the only warmth in the entire building. A fire in the hearth. A kettle. A chair with a worn depression in the seat that had been occupied at the same angle every day for nineteen years. On the mantelpiece above the fireplace a photograph in a frame: a young woman in her twenties, standing in the estate's entrance hall with the upright posture of someone who had learned early that how you occupied space communicated who you intended to be taken seriously as. Blonde hair. Blue eyes. The three-calculations-ahead quality in the gaze.

Alen pushed the door open with both hands and levelled the Leviathan at the interior.

Patrick raised both hands — the measured, unhurried motion of a man performing surrender as a practised gesture rather than a panicked one. Approximately eighty years old. White hair. The distinct mustache. Brown and black eyes that were not dim. A formal three-piece suit in black with a deep maroon vest, worn with the precision of a man who dressed for the building he inhabited regardless of whether anyone would see him. He looked at Alen in the doorway with the complete, settled calm of someone who has been expecting a particular person to come through a particular door and is registering, quietly, that the wait is over.

"You killed the last of them," Patrick said. Quietly. "I administered the virus to those people with my own hands, on Master Spencer's instructions. I should have ended their suffering myself years ago. I lacked the courage." A pause. "I am glad you did not."

"I know who you are," Alen said. "Oswell E. Spencer's most loyal servant. Eyewitness to the full history of Umbrella and its sins. You were present for all of it."

"Yes," Patrick said. "All of it."

He lowered his hands. He turned slightly toward the mantelpiece. He pointed — one finger, precise, unhurried — at the photograph of the young woman in the entrance hall.

"You are her child," Patrick said. "I know who you really are." He looked back at Alen with the expression of a man delivering something he has been holding in trust for a very long time. "You are her redemption. The only humanity she showed toward any living being. You are the redemption of everything Umbrella built and everything it destroyed. You are the Ghost of Wesker — the version of that name that does not end in catastrophe."

He paused. And then, with the specific weight of someone who has been carrying this specific piece of knowledge for a very long time and has chosen this specific moment to place it down:

"I know about the prophecy," Patrick said. "The Ndipaya. Sunjata — the Warrior of Liberation. The tribe has been waiting for you for a long time. And so have I."

"How," Alen said. Flat. Not a challenge — a genuine question. "You were Spencer's most loyal man. How do you know any of this."

Patrick smiled. The specific smile of a man who has been asked the correct question and has been ready to answer it for nineteen years.

"I was a child when I first came to this estate," he said. "My father served here before me. I grew up in these rooms, in these corridors, in the company of a man I believed in absolutely — and in the company of a girl he had claimed for his programme the way he claimed everything, as a resource rather than a person." He looked at the photograph. "Alex grew up here. In this building. Spencer saw a tool for his vision. He never looked further than the function she served for him. But I looked further."

"She did not have a father," Patrick said. "Not in any sense that mattered. She had Spencer, which was something considerably worse than not having one. I was not able to be what she needed. But I was present. I was consistent. And I understood her in the ways he could not be bothered to try."

He moved to the chair beside the fire and sat — slowly, the careful movement of a man in his eighties who respected his own joints — and looked at Alen with the clear-eyed quality that had been there the moment the door opened.

"I noticed she was pregnant before anyone else," Patrick said. "Not because she told me. Because I had been watching this woman since she was a girl and I knew her body language the way I knew the rooms of this building — every room, every tell. I said nothing to Master Spencer. I distracted the surveillance when it mattered. I created the gaps she needed when she needed them." A pause. "I did not know who the father was then. I learned that later. But I knew she was carrying something she intended to protect, and that was enough for me to know whose side I was on."

"One afternoon in October 1983," Patrick said, "Master Spencer departed for a business engagement at another Umbrella facility. He would be gone for several hours. Alex arrived at the east wing entrance — this entrance — shortly after his car left the grounds. She was carrying an infant. She did not explain. She did not need to explain. She sat in that chair and I sat where you are standing and she held the child and neither of us spoke for a long time."

He was looking at the fire.

"She handed him to me," Patrick said. "She said nothing. She handed him to me and I held him and he opened his eyes and they were that colour — that specific blue that I had never seen on either of his parents — and something happened. I do not have a scientific classification for it. I am not the scientist. But in thirty years of serving a man who treated human beings as material, thirty years of performing what I was instructed to perform without allowing myself to fully account for what it cost, thirty seconds of those eyes looking at me from that face — something in the accounting changed."

"I had to betray my master to hide that child from him," Patrick said quietly. "And I understood, holding him, that it was the first correct thing I had done in thirty years."

Alen lowered the Leviathan fully. He stood in the doorway of the room with the fire and the photograph and the old man who had kept both for nineteen years, and he was running the accounting that the information required.

"She told you and you know about me," he said. "Why didn't you tell Spencer. For twenty-three years — why didn't you."

"Because of those blue eyes," Patrick said simply. "Because of what I saw in them. I do not know what you are biologically — she never explained it to me and I would not have understood if she had. But I know what I saw. And I know what she believed."

He looked at Alen directly.

"Albert Wesker saw everything as an asset," Patrick said. "His intelligence, his strength, his work, other people — all of it evaluated for utility and discarded when the utility was exhausted. He was a machine in a system, operating without sentiment or regret. He would have looked at that child and seen a variable. Something to be classified and deployed."

"Alex was different," he said. "Not because she was a better person. She was not a better person. But she carried that child for nine months. She gave birth to him at considerable personal cost and in conditions she engineered with extraordinary care. And those nine months gave her something Albert Wesker would never understand in a million years — the specific, unparalleled connection between a mother and the life she produced. That connection does not care about philosophy. It does not care about ambition or vision or the evolution of the human species. It simply exists, below all of that, older than all of that."

"She gave him away because she loved him," Patrick said. "Not despite the love — because of it. She knew what Spencer would do with what the child was. She chose his survival over her access to him. That choice is the most human thing she ever did. And she spent the rest of her life trying to undo her humanity and never fully succeeding."

The fire. The rain. The photograph on the mantelpiece.

"You are her redemption," Patrick said. "Not a legacy. Not an asset. A redemption. The proof that she contained something Spencer could not extract from her. You went the other direction from both of them — from the machine and from the Overseer — and that is what I saw in those eyes in October 1983. That is why I am here. That is why I waited."

Alen holstered the Leviathan. He came in. He sat in the chair across from the fire.

"You have questions," Patrick said. He rose from his chair with the careful movement of eighty years and moved to the kettle. "And I have answers that have been waiting considerably longer than is comfortable. We should not waste the opportunity." He glanced back at Alen with the specific, warm precision of a man who expresses care through provision. "The tea will be ready in a moment."

The building held its weather around them. The fire continued. The photograph of Alex Wesker in her twenties looked at whoever was looking at it with the three-calculations-ahead quality she had brought to everything — and Alen, sitting in the chair across from an eighty-year-old butler who had kept a fire burning for nineteen years on the strength of thirty seconds with a three-day-old infant, looked back at her and did not look away.
