Chapter 23 - CHAPTER 23:The academy II

The academy stretched, sprawling like a small city, organized into what were known as the six distinct rings. Each ring served its own unique purpose within the grand infrastructure, a span of activities woven from the threads of student life and academia.

First, there was the Outing Ring, a bustling marketplace where students flocked to procure their essentials and indulge in leisure activities. Vibrant stalls showcased an array of goods, from magical trinkets to leisurely games, all designed to provide a much-needed respite from the rigors of study.

Then came the Crucible Ring, a domain dominated by the coliseum and training grounds, where aspiring warriors practiced their skills. Here, students ranked outside the top ten engaged in fierce sparring matches, honing their combat techniques in the hopes of rising to greater heights,as they did not have the better facilities in personal training spaces that came with top rankings.

Next lay the Masters Residential Ring, an exquisite enclave where teachers and lecturers resided in magnificent manors.

surrounded by libraries and salons.

The hierarchy was palpable; the more esteemed the educator, the more luxurious the amenities afforded to them.

At the edge of the academy, the Nature Ring unfolded, a verdant forest teeming with magical beasts meant to challenge and train students. Some of these creatures were formidable, their prowess rivaling that of the strongest instructors. But they were kept in check, restrained by the elite teachers and the chancellor, the academy's head, ensuring the safety of all.

The Student Dormitory Ring was a self-evident hive of activity, housing individuals from every year. Each year occupied its own dedicated building, and within those halls, the top ten students of each year enjoyed unparalleled facilities. The hierarchy was strict; the higher the rank, the better the treatment, culminating in the unparalleled luxury bestowed upon the top student—the envy of all.

Finally, the Apex Ring rose above the rest, holding the administrative towers and academy buildings, a symbol of authority and governance.

And the edge of each ring, which interceps each others, transportation lines intersected, serviced by luminous Magi-Trains— magnificent serpent of ley-powered carriages gliding through the air, propelled by the ethereal force of mana repulsion.

----

Suddenly, bursting out a corner, were still the running quartet of El, Caspian, Noah, and Caleb, with El lagged slightly behind, a fact that irked him deeply.

He was, after all, a mage, who specializes in evocation and while that offered him remarkable abilities, it also meant physical limitations that today were more pronounced, but even that reason was not enough as he wasn't the only mage here as Caleb, who was also a mage, but specializes in abjuration and enchantment, and even so he was constantly trained by his sister in physical aspects.

As they darted beneath the elevated train tracks and into the Apex Ring, a rush surged through them, compelling them to push their limits further unnecessarily upon catching sight of the imposing academy buildings.

The urge to sprint faster was intense; after all, the impending punishment for which was a sparring match with Lilah, and it was no light matter. Rather than a friendly bout, it was a gauntlet of fierce combat, with Lilah's incredible strength and prowess ensuring that any competitor who chose to hold back would face a relentless barrage from her skilled and unyielding blade.

At just sixteen, Lilah had already achieved the rank of adept in swordsmanship, an accomplishment that takes geniuses multiple decades to attain and prodigies at least two decades.

That would have been what people would call her, a prodigy but she was a monster.

After all she wasn't only versed in swords but in weapons entirely.

With her talent and insane training, she was a force to be reckoned with—well-versed in nearly every weapon imaginable, from spears to hammers, bows to daggers, and even traditional armaments like chakrams and needle blades. Her skills paired with an indomitable spirit, made encounters with her terrifying; the very prospect of sparring sent chills racing down the spine.

As they closed the distance to the finish line, the lead among the quartet shifted rapidly, dictated by the obstacles strewn in their path. El stumbled for a brief moment, ceding his position to Caspian, who then faltered, allowing Caleb the lead—but now, with an open stretch ahead and less than fifty meters left to the finish, they teetered on the brink of deciding who would face the perilous penalty that awaited the last place finisher.

-----

"Huff, huff, huff,"

El gasped, his hands resting on his knees as he tried to catch his breath. The rest of the group stood around him, equally winded,

"I huff win after all," he managed to say, a smile breaking through his exhaustion.

" And you all are the losers, especially you, Caspian! You're the biggest loser, huff"

"But let's not forget our ultimate loser. That would be you, Caleb! Haha!"

Noah teased, laughter bubbling up to replace the heavy breaths

The laughter echoed around them, a brief moment of camaraderie that contrasted with Caleb's growing anxiety. His brow glistened with sweat—not only from the run but also from the looming punishment that awaited him.

The academy, structured like a ring, optimally segregated its buildings by purpose. The classroom block, a C-shaped arrangement, housed students from all four years, while the open space in the center served as a gathering spot, complete with long benches and neatly arranged patches of grass.

As they lingered outside their designated building, students from various years caught sight of them while walking pass but didn't mind it as it was a normal occurrence, students chatting some whispering and laughing.

"What are you all doing on school grounds?" A sharp, girlish voice sliced through the air, halting their chatter. The quartet tensed, turning to face the source.

"Oh, it's just Mel," El said, visibly relaxing upon recognizing the student council president.

"I am the Student Council President, and I expect you to address me as such! Fail to do so, and you'll find yourselves writing an essay about fishes. Trust me, you don't want to right an essay about fishes."

"And speak my name fully if you want to address me,I'm your senior"

she warned, her tone leaving no room for argument.

"And Noah, as part of the council, I expect you to behave accordingly."

With that, she turned, marching away, her disdain palpable.

"Okay, okay, sorry...Mel,"

Noah called after her, a teasing lilt in his voice.

"Ptttt…"

she shot him a glare over her shoulder, not wanting to waste another moment on what she deemed foolishness.

"Damn it! History class!"

Noah suddenly exclaimed, his eyes wide as realization hit him. Without another word, he took off sprinting toward the first-year building, urging the others to follow suit.

"Right! History!" they echoed, breaking into a full run.

They raced toward the class hall; a shared space where students from various departments could gather. Each specialty—illusion, evocation, necromancy, and adjuration, among others—had its dedicated classrooms, but the class hall was where all the first-years would converge for general courses.

As they burst into the hall, the chatter of eager students filled the air,and still continued even as they entered.
