The Shadow Realms game, made by Kaiba corporation is different from the Yugioh card game, it's closer to the Virtual Reality game we saw in the "Shinato's Ark" arc from the anime, monsters are summoned as units on the field, the battle field between players is a lot bigger like a really big chess board.
Cards can be placed in these spaces and their effects also are different, some have a number of spaces foward or around the monster as a condition to activate.
A lot of cards have their effect altered, that is also the case for a lot of spells and traps.
As the story goes on, some monsters will appear that have their effects changed to have a limit in range, like man-eater bug, it destroys any monster, but on Shadow Realms, it only triggers in a monster that steps in a 2 space area around where it's set.

As the shining flames died off, the Pharaoh was standing there, unfazed and with a smile of satisfaction on his face.
At first, Yuhan had his guard up, he never reached this far on the questline, whatever comes next is entirely new to him. But soon a few sounds were heard on the throne room.
As the field spell slowly dissipated in a rain of particles, Atem was clapping, slowly, looking at Yuhan.
— Truly a duel to remember, it was fun until the very last moment, congratulations, Yuhan.
A notification popped up on the boy's interface.
— "Quest Cleared" I can't believe it, I won…
Atem was slowly approaching the boy, looking at the main menu, Yuhan could see the maintenance has begun, maybe he got stuck in the game until the cutscene ended.
— Follow me.
Atem turned his back and walked towards the throne, Yuhan followed him through a small corridor behind the throne, the walls were full of hieroglyphs with a golden shimmer.
A light came at the end, revealing a big treasury room, with a flock of stairs leading to a wall. At the center on the room, in a pedestal there was a golden box, filled with hieroglyphics and a millennium eye in the front.
— That is what you came for, the realm box.
Yuhan looked at "Atem" sure that he was being controlled by one of the GM's somewhere. Role playing was one of the fun aspects of the game so the boy played along.
— Thank you, Pharaoh.
Walking towards the box, Yuhan took a little pause for dramatic effect before picking it up, but at the moment he did so, the ground started to shake.
— It's seems our realms are getting further apart from each other, our time is coming to an end.
At the end of the stairs, the walls started to open, revealing a colorful portal.
— Step into the portal and it will take you to a neighboring realm.
Yuhan started to go up the stairs, before turning back, the boy screamed at Atem with a smile on his face.
— Let's meet again! When you have a break some time!
Atem looked at him a little confused and murmured to himself.
— He didn't even realize yet…
Turning his back, while the boy was rushing to the portal, the pharaoh smiled a little and said.
— A powerful shadow has come to this world, may you be a beacon of light in their time of need.
Said the Pharaoh as he tossed something in the portal, a black and golden book, with the distinct Millennium eye on the cover.
Yuhan's eye's were bathed in a bright white light, as his vision was still adjusting, blurry forms started to take shape, a brick road, tall trees, a tower in the distance, small floating balls of light rising to the sky lighting the way.
With a small thud, a teenager bumps into Yuhan and looks a him with a confused look, brown hair, blue shirt, brown pants, clearly a western styled NPC.
— What are you standing around for? It's about to start.
Yuhan was confused, this place didn't match any of the maps from "Shadow Games"
Is this the new expansion? Did the GM give me access because I beat him?
A sudden wave of excitement rushed inside him, a new map, he was most likely a beta tester, looking around, Yuhan found a very beatiful world, small butterflies on the flowers in the distance, squirrels, birls, small blades of grass, leaves swaying in the wind, this level of animation detail and graphics was nothing like he ever seen in any of the Virtual worlds he's been to.
Leave it to Kaiba Corporation, this is most likely new tecnology, this level of rendition would crash almost any console.
Following the crowd, the boy found himself coming closer to the tower, the subtle sounds of footsteps, distant voices e nature, had replaced the music soundtrack of the game, as he played most of the time with background music set to zero, Yuhan didn't even realized this fact.
That NPC said it's about to start, I guess this is the beginning of the main quest, I wonder if new mechanics are getting introduced.
Going up the stairs, he found the entrance to the tower, now much closer and imposing in size, stepping on the inside, circular book shelves adorned the walls, with a clover shaped opening on the ceiling as the light shined down on the crowd, dialoges played out from the NPCs, some claiming to be the "chosen ones" and other things like that.
As Yuhan found a spot near the center of the room, suddenly the room grew darker, and a voice could be heard.
Oh, I guess a cutscene is about to play out.
