Chapter 31 - Back against the wall

"Here I go." With a single step from his right foot, he dashed towards the rabbit. The rabbit brought his daggers together and clashed with Siri, sizzling sparks flying from the friction of their blades.

Siri is taking the worst one, so all I have to do is deal with these guys. Running on the walls, one of them came from my right. Doesn't look like he has any special dagger, still, I can't afford to get hit. The ehktar went for my head, but I could read his attack and moved out of the way in time. And I know there is always another lurking by. Sensing the dagger aimed at my back, I spun around in a twirl then attcked it's neck. A quick kill.

However, the one from before deflected my attack. Fuck, I wasn't fast enough. Siri or remen would have killed them by now.

The ehktar wasn't done. In the same motion, it leaped into the air and kicked me square in the jaw. The impact sent me hurdling, crashing into a room.

My head thumped ravenously. What was that kick? It hurt so much. For mindless bodies, they pack a punch.

But as soon as the pair of ehkatrs stepped into the room. I jumped to my feet. With no window, the room was in a constant state of darkness. This, this feels nice. I don't know how good they are at killing without light, but when it was only Bella and me, before I joined the faction. This was all I did.

The corner of my lip slowly curled into a smirk. I like these odds.

I have always found it strange. Why the darkness never fazed me. Especially when my eyes are active and this energy–aequor is flowing through my veins.

I can feel their red glow. It feels so comfortable.

The ehkars kept tilting their heads at different angles every second. Constantly tilting, until.

They see me!

In that instant, one threw its dagger at me. It came with incredible speed, but I can see it and know them, these bastards. Another is coming at me in this very moment. I understand. I'm starting to understand how you monsters work.

Barely, the dagger grazed my shoulder. I moved fast enough to meet the other one. I need to kill it. I will spare nothing; this one strike must be fatal.

It swung at me, and I matched it. Not with a normal swing but a swing infused with all the firepower I can muster. My aequor, I moved everything to my blade, igniting it. Unleashing it.

My sword cut through its dagger and swiftly went through its body. Getting stuck in the middle of its chest.

One down.

He is coming. Sensing the other, I turned to meet it "eehhg!" and was met with a dagger through my left shoulder. It had another dagger! I wasn't fast enough. My body spasmed as the pain spread through my entire body. "Aahhh!!" I froze and used that chance it gave me, another kick to my face, which sent me backwards. It followed up with punches, but I ducked and rolled into the darkness.

This pain is going to kill me. What is this? I hate this. I hate him.

Right now, he can't see me, and the dagger is still in my shoulder. I need to strike while it's still looking for me.

Siri and the other guy are still going at it. Their fight is as loud as it gets; that's perfect.

I have a plan, a very simple one. Taking in the pain, I could feel tears roll down my face. Just a little longer. I need my breathing to become so slow and calm that I fade into the darkness.

Then slowly stalk my way towards him from the corner of the room, then. I pulled out the dagger from my shoulder. I bite my lip as I bear the pain, cutting it in the process.

I threw the dagger across the room and watched as the ehktar flinched. No, it barely moved its head, but slowly, it turned towards me. It knows where I am. But it's unarmed. If it goes for the dagger, I will win, so it can only—

It ran towards me.

"Shit!"

Using its palm, it knocked my sword away, then it stepped hard against my knee. I could feel it shift, oh no…

It then struck my ribs four times. The impact made me throw up. I couldn't bear it. It pinned me to the ground and began to choke me.

It's so strong. I tried to get it off me, but I can't make it budge. I'm done for.

I looked, fadingly, at the pure white of the ehktar mask. My vision blurred, but I remembered I still had something. I grabbed onto the arm of the ehktar and, using all my strength, I pried a little breathing room.

"Die…"

I opened my mouth, and a heap of fire came pouring out, directly at its face. It kept going, and going. I could hear the char of its cloth and skin and smell the smoked flesh. But still I kept going, the flames blew through the room's ceiling as it grew.

Slowly but surely, its grip loosened, and it felt over.

"I won..kahh!" I coughed frantically, trying to catch myself. Blood splattering with each hack at my throat. I need to escape. The fire is bringing the ceiling down. Fuck, I can barely breathe, but I need to save Maya. I need to help Siri, but before that, I put my hand to my shoulder and charred my wound. "Aaahhh!!" The smell of burnt flesh filled my nostrils. My own flesh. I want to vomit.

I began to cry, and my body began to shake frantically. I cannot survive this…but somehow I must. I won, I won. So somehow, c'mon Nero, keep going.

The ceiling groaned and cracked as plaster and wood began to fall. Some landed on me, but I paid it no mind.

I grabbed my sword and slowly limped to the door. My vision faded in and out of consciousness. I was barely holding on. The pain had numbed my senses. Numbed everything.

Using the wall as support, I dragged myself out to the hallway. My eyes widened as I saw Siri, bloodied all over. He was bleeding from all over, but there didn't seem to be any major wounds on him. So how?

He stood at the far corner, while Rabbit was right across me. Rabbit saw me first, and it felt like he was smiling as he looked at me.

Siri's face grew pale as he saw the position I was in. he was so far away from Rabbit and me, who were three steps away. No, in my current state, he was one step away.

I'm a sitting duck. And Rabbit wasn't gonna waste that.

As Rabbit leaped to end me, I stared at Siri.

Siri looked at me, then rushed to my aid, "Nero!" his sword ready to be unsheathed, his usual style.

In this situation, there was nothing I could do but face the death that was coming.

Time slowed as Rabbit attacks fell a moment from my heart. Only a moment, but that was enough time.

To switch. In the next moment, Siri came with a strike of his own. Unsheathing his sword with a click and cutting in that same motion.

With an upward swing, "yinyang style: circle of unending severance," Siri cut Rabbit in half. Its body fell over in a pulp, and he was dead.

In the corner of the hallway, I fell against the wall. Siri doesn't play around in his zone, huh…circle of…unending severance—A cool name.

I looked at Siri, my eyes half open. "You know…I di-didn't think that switch would work, I thought I was gassed out." I chuckled as Siri walked towards me after wiping the blood of his blade. He is a demon. I'm surprised he knew what I was thinking.

It doesn't seem like I can do anything else. My eyes couldn't see Siri anymore. Only the light of the fire spreads through the building.

Sorry, Maya, sorry everyone. I will be going first.

"Yo, Siri, looks like you guys are done here?"

"We are"

"Great, we got Maya. Let's go."
