Chapter 278 - Chapter 278: Fire Release: Kagutsuchi + Two Missions; Letting Uchiha Hikari Experience the New Era [HN]

Over the next few days, Uchiha Hikari was housed in a guest room within the Hokage Residence. Her movements were restricted, but she was not mistreated.

Her meals were delivered on time, and clean clothes had been prepared for her.

Other than being forbidden from leaving and using chakra, all of her basic needs were taken care of.

Ironically, this state of near captivity only made her even more restless.

Every day, she gazed through the window at that unfamiliar and, in her eyes, "false" world beyond, where hatred and confusion tangled together inside her like a trapped beast.

One morning, Chiya appeared outside her room once again.

Instead of wearing the ceremonial Hokage robes that symbolized his authority, he was dressed in a simple, dark ninja outfit.

The reward for unsealing the Uchiha weapon had been fairly decent.

He had obtained a Mangekyō Sharingan ability: Kagutsuchi.

It allowed Amaterasu to be shaped into any form for offense or defense.

It was an extremely practical technique.

That wasn't all.

It had also triggered two missions related to Uchiha Hikari.

One was naturally the rather "criminal" mission to steal Uchiha Hikari away, while the other required him to free her from the emotional chains that bound her heart.

A mission like healing someone's heart...

At least in Chiya's opinion...

It was still easier than the absurdly difficult mission of stealing her away.

"You're coming with me today."

Chiya got straight to the point.

Hikari slowly raised her eyes and looked at him coldly.

"More ridiculous stories? Or are you taking me to watch those naive children again?"

Her voice dripped with mockery.

"No."

Chiya's expression remained calm.

"You're going to see how ninjas carry out missions in this era."

Hikari paused for a moment.

A mission?

In her time, missions meant slaughter, espionage, sabotage, and walking hand in hand with death.

She wanted to see what these so-called missions of this carefully decorated age of peace actually looked like.

She offered no objection and silently followed him.

To her surprise, only the two of them were going. The female ninja named Mei Terumi was nowhere to be seen.

Chiya didn't use any flashy Body Flicker Technique. Instead, he simply walked out of Konoha with her like an ordinary ninja.

The sun was warm, a gentle breeze brushed across their faces, and lush farmland stretched along both sides of the road as merchant caravans occasionally passed by.

Hikari still wore her cold expression, but amid the peaceful journey, the tension in her body eased ever so slightly.

Their destination was several small villages near the border of the Land of Fire.

The mission itself was so simple that Hikari found it absurd.

They were helping villagers repair vegetable garden fences damaged by a recent storm and using Earth Release and Water Release to irrigate newly planted crops more efficiently.

When the villagers in the first settlement saw Chiya present his Konoha forehead protector and mission scroll, warm, genuine smiles immediately spread across their faces.

The elderly villagers, in particular, looked at him with deep respect and gratitude.

"Thank you so much, honored ninja from Konoha!"

The village chief rubbed his hands together as he repeatedly expressed his thanks.

"We're sorry to trouble you with something so small."

Chiya nodded slightly.

"It's our duty. Please show us the fields that need help."

Hikari stood nearby, silently observing everything.

She watched as Chiya rolled up his sleeves, carefully inspected the damaged fence, reinforced its foundation with a basic Earth Release technique, then personally drove each wooden stake into the ground.

His movements were steady and precise. There wasn't the slightest trace of the pride expected from a Hokage. Instead, he looked more like a seasoned craftsman.

Whenever villagers handed him water or a towel, he accepted them naturally and thanked them.

When it came time to irrigate the fields, Chiya didn't unleash some overwhelming large-scale Water Release technique.

Instead, he first asked the villagers about the layout of the farmland and how much water each section needed. After forming hand seals, he guided water from a nearby stream into numerous narrow channels, carefully nourishing every single seedling.

He even taught the villagers how to use the terrain to build simple irrigation systems themselves.

Hikari was assigned only minor support work, such as passing tools and holding wooden stakes steady.

At first, she found it unbearably tedious. Her movements were stiff, and her eyes were filled with contempt.

Helping with these trivial chores counted as a ninja mission?

To her, it was an insult to a ninja's power.

Yet as she watched Chiya work with unwavering focus and saw the villagers' heartfelt smiles after their fences were repaired and fields irrigated, the sarcastic words she wanted to say caught in her throat.

"Miss Ninja, you should take a break and have some water."

A little girl with twin pigtails shyly walked over, holding out a bowl of fresh water. Her large eyes were filled with innocent gratitude.

She had seen the beautiful but cold-looking older sister helping hold the fence earlier.

Hikari looked at the clear water, then at the girl's dirt-smudged face that was still overflowing with a bright smile. Her outstretched hand hesitated.

Such pure, defenseless kindness was something utterly unfamiliar to her.

In her memories, the weak only ever treated the strong with fear and reverence...

Or calculation.

In the end, she accepted the bowl. As her fingertips touched its warmth, something hard inside her heart seemed to tremble from that same warmth.

She silently took a sip.

The sweetness of the water caught her completely by surprise.

By the end of the day, they had visited three villages, repeating similar work in each one.

Throughout it all, Chiya remained patient and meticulous, treating every villager with courtesy.

Hikari gradually changed from resistance and confusion to silently carrying out the simple tasks Chiya assigned her.

Before she realized it, however, her gaze lingered longer and longer on the fields brought back to life by their efforts and on the villagers' sincere smiles.

As the sun set, they completed the irrigation work in the final village.

Just as they were preparing to leave, the villagers gathered together of their own accord, insisting on giving them homegrown fruit and homemade pickled vegetables.

"It's only a small token of our appreciation. Please accept it, honored ninja!"

"Thanks to you, we finally have hope for this year's harvest!"

"Thank you! Thank you, Konoha!"

"..."

Unable to refuse, Chiya accepted some food that was easy to carry.

He then turned toward the silent Hikari and handed her several bright red fruits.

She looked at the fruit, then at the wrinkled but genuinely grateful faces surrounding her.

For the first time, she didn't immediately reject them in disgust.

After a brief hesitation, she slowly reached out and accepted them.

The cool, smooth fruit rested in her palm, yet somehow felt surprisingly heavy.

On the journey back, they remained silent.

But Hikari no longer bristled with hostility as she had before.

She lowered her head and stared at the fruit in her hands, her expression complicated.

Completing this kind of... mission that helped people...

Receiving this kind of... gratitude...

It felt strange.

There was none of the emptiness that followed killing.

None of the exhilaration that came from overwhelming others with power.

Only a faint sense of... peace...

One that left her completely at a loss.

And whenever she recalled the smiles of the villagers, especially that little girl...

Deep within her heart, there seemed to be an incredibly faint warmth...

One she refused even to acknowledge.

She secretly looked up at Chiya walking ahead.

The setting sun stretched his shadow across the ground.

His back remained as steadfast as a mountain, yet there was less of the imposing dignity of a Hokage and more of the reassuring reliability of an ordinary man.

Although she had been confined, she had heard countless stories about him.

He had ended the wars between villages.

He possessed power capable of overturning the entire world.

Yet he was willing to spend an entire day doing these meaningless little tasks that the old Hikari would have dismissed without a second thought.

More importantly, he did them as though it were the most natural thing in the world.

As though this was exactly what a ninja was meant to be.

"So... this is what you're protecting now?"

Hikari suddenly spoke in a low, hoarse voice, with the slightest trace of confusion.

It was the first time all day that she had spoken to Chiya on her own.

Without slowing his pace or turning around, Chiya answered calmly.

"Protecting peace isn't just empty words.

"It's reflected in every field where crops can grow in safety and every ordinary person who can smile.

"A ninja's power can be used to destroy, but it can also be used to create and protect."

Hikari fell silent.

Destroy...

Create...

Protect...

Those words echoed violently within her heart.

Her own power had only ever been used for destruction and had earned her the title of "weapon."

Creation...

Protection...

She had never once considered such a path.

She had even looked down on it.

Several days later, Chiya once again took Hikari out of Konoha.

This time, they headed toward the Land of Rain.

The closer they came to its border, the more obvious the changes in the landscape became.

The prosperity and stability of the Land of Fire gradually gave way to desolation and ruin.

The roads became muddy and difficult to travel.

Everywhere they looked were scars left behind by war.

Abandoned fortresses.

Scorched earth.

Collapsed homes.

Even the sky seemed permanently covered by gloomy clouds as light rain came and went.

After entering the Land of Rain, the contrast became even starker.

The civilians wore ragged clothes and looked painfully thin.

Many children were little more than skin and bones, their eyes filled with timidity.

The villages were even more dilapidated, and life was clearly much harsher here.

The scars left by war could never be healed overnight.

Yet despite all that suffering, many people in the Land of Rain possessed something that was completely different from numb despair.

Hope.

Hikari saw people wearing matching uniforms and forehead protectors bearing the Akatsuki emblem organizing villagers to clear away rubble and rebuild homes.

Some appeared to be Konoha ninja, helping survey the terrain and plan irrigation projects.

Elsewhere, newly reclaimed farmland had already been opened up, where rows of green seedlings stubbornly pushed upward beneath the endless rain.

The people were still exhausted and overworked, but the lifeless silence in their conversations had been replaced by hope for the future.

When they noticed Chiya, they didn't recognize him, yet instead of fear, they looked at him with curiosity, drawn by his calm strength and quiet kindness.

Chiya led Hikari silently across the Land of Rain.

He offered no explanations.

He simply let her see everything with her own eyes.

They passed a village that had only recently been half rebuilt, where children laughed as they splashed through muddy puddles despite being covered in dirt.

They saw an elderly man who had lost an arm earnestly learning from a Konoha instructor how to use chakra to help weave fishing nets, his face full of concentration.

They watched Rain ninja and Akatsuki members, who still seemed somewhat distant from one another, working side by side to carry timber and repair a destroyed bridge.

...

Everything before her shook Hikari to her core.

The peace and prosperity of the Land of Fire...

The Land of Rain, scarred by war yet overflowing with hope...

Her heart could no longer remain frozen.

Painful memories surged through her mind like a flood.

The endless infighting within her clan.

Ceaseless wars.

The despair of being used as nothing more than a tool.

The agony of being hated by the very clansmen she trusted most before they ultimately betrayed and sealed her away.

That era had been filled with bloodshed, darkness, and the deepest malice imaginable.

For survival.

For the clan.

Everyone could become a chess piece.

Or a discarded one.

The so-called peace of those days had merely been the brief pause between wars.

She had always believed the world was simply like this.

The strong devoured the weak.

Hatred was eternal.

Every ounce of her rage and resentment had been built upon that belief.

But then...

What was everything she was seeing now?

Why could the Senju and Uchiha build a village together?

Why would powerful ninja willingly help ordinary villagers grow vegetables and repair fences?

Why, in a nation devastated by endless war like the Land of Rain, did people still carry hope in their eyes?

Why could different ninja, even former enemies, work together toward something called rebuilding?

...

One question after another struck against the walls of the beliefs she had clung to for so many years.

She stopped beside the muddy road and stared at the distant village slowly returning to life beneath the drizzling rain, unable to speak.

Rain soaked her long hair and clothes, yet she didn't notice.

Those black eyes that had once held nothing but hatred and coldness were now filled with fierce struggle, confusion, and a deep, indescribable sense of bewilderment.

She had always believed she understood the true nature of the world.

But everything before her stood in complete opposition to the cruel and hopeless world she thought she knew.

'What if...'

'What if this world truly held another possibility?'

'What if a ninja's power really could be used for something besides destruction?'

'What if...'

'My life could mean something beyond being used as a weapon and sealed away?'

The moment that thought took root, it could no longer be suppressed.

Hikari slowly narrowed her eyes.

She couldn't tell whether the drops running down her cheeks were rain, tears...

Or both.

They fell one after another onto the muddy ground.

Chiya stood quietly beside her.

He neither hurried her nor disturbed her.

He simply remained there, letting the cold rain fall over them both.

He knew that for someone as deeply obsessed as Hikari, no amount of preaching could compare to experiencing the truth for herself.

The ancient "weapon" stood beneath the gentle rain of the new era, confronted by a reality completely different from the one she had always believed in.

The heart that had remained frozen for far too long was quietly beginning to melt and rebuild itself.

As for what path lay ahead...

Perhaps even she no longer knew.

All that remained was confusion...

And the faintest spark of curiosity.
