Chapter 65 - Mastering The Core.

The small settlement nestled in the valley far from the prying eyes of the Alpha's domain was quiet in the early hours of dawn. Mist curled lazily along the cobblestone streets, the faint light of the rising sun catching on the tips of the wooden rooftops. For Riven, the settlement was a far cry from the chaos of the ravine and the rigorous isolation of his training. Here, the world moved at a slower pace, the dangers fewer, and yet, the lessons he would learn in these quiet days were no less demanding than those faced in the jagged cliffs.

Riven stretched, feeling the familiar ache in his muscles from yesterday's sparring session. His body had changed over the past months denser, faster, stronger and yet, it was his mind, his core, that he was most eager to master. Astra stood across from him in the small courtyard behind their modest dwelling. The air was crisp, carrying the scent of dew and distant pine. She watched him with an intensity that made him both nervous and invigorated.

"Today," she began, her voice calm but carrying the weight of command, "we finish what we started. You've grown stronger than I could have anticipated, Riven. But there is one final lesson I must teach you: how to utilize the energy in your core to its fullest potential without going berserk."

Riven's gaze sharpened. He had already learned to control his Night Wolf energy with far more stability than before. The days of uncontrolled rage and losing himself were behind him, or so he hoped. He nodded. "I'm ready," he said, settling into a meditative posture opposite Astra.

She mirrored him, legs crossed, spine straight, hands resting lightly on her knees. The courtyard seemed to shrink around them, the world falling away until it was just the two of them and the faint hum of energy beneath the surface of the earth. Astra's voice was low, measured, almost reverent as she began.

"Most wolves," she said, "have a single energy within their core. That makes it easier for them to synchronize, to tap into it fully. Their power grows steadily, sometimes over centuries, and only a few ever reach the heights their cores are capable of." She paused, her eyes sweeping over him as though measuring not just his current strength but the potential hidden beneath. "Yours is different, Riven. You have… two energies."

Riven's brow furrowed slightly, his curiosity piqued. "Two?"

"Yes," Astra said, nodding. "The first is the energy that belongs to the ranking system the Night Wolf energy. I've been observing you closely. If I'm honest, your progress has been remarkable. Just a year ago, you were low Wolf rank. And now… look at you. Your growth is unprecedented. At this rate, you might even reach Dire Wolf rank before you turn twenty."

Riven allowed himself a small smile, but he didn't speak. He wanted to hear the rest Astra's voice always carried truths he had to confront fully before reacting.

"The second," Astra continued, her tone darkening slightly, "is the Dark Energy. The primal energy. A curse, if you will. It's not ranked it doesn't belong to any system, no one has accounted for it. No one knows how much power its wielder truly possesses. You tap into it only when you lose control, when you go berserk. It allows you to oppose wolves at Alpha Candidate level, to strike where normal limits would fail but the cost is always your body. You overextend yourself, drawing on a power your frame can't fully sustain, and you pay for it."

Riven's jaw tightened. He remembered the battles, the rage-fueled moments where the Dark Energy had surged through him, leaving him exhausted and bleeding, body wracked by power he couldn't fully harness. "I'm stronger now," he said, a hint of defiance in his voice. "I can control it better than before. I can handle it."

Astra shook her head gently, her eyes steady on his. "You're strong enough to handle the Night Wolf energy at one hundred percent," she said slowly, "but not the Dark Energy. Not yet. But there is a way… a way to combine them. Carefully. Deliberately. You could use the Dark Energy as an amplifier for your Night Wolf energy. Just enough so that you don't lose yourself. Just enough to enhance your normal power by one hundred and fifty percent. It is delicate. Dangerous. But possible."

Riven's eyes lit with a mix of determination and eagerness. "I think I can manage that," he said, the confidence in his voice tempered by a sliver of caution.

Astra's lips curved into a faint smile. "Good. Then we begin."

She extended her hands, and the faint hum of energy radiated from her core, visible as a soft, blue shimmer that flickered across her form. "First," she said, "you must learn to feel the flow of your Night Wolf energy. Not just control it but understand it. Listen to it. Let it move through you naturally. Only then can you consider adding another layer."

Riven closed his eyes and focused inward. He could feel the energy pulsing in his core, steady and familiar now, like the rhythm of his heartbeat amplified a hundredfold. It flowed through him without resistance, a river of controlled force, and for the first time, he truly understood the stability Astra had been teaching him.

"Good," Astra said softly. "Now, imagine the Dark Energy as a shadow trailing your Night Wolf energy. It is wild, untamed, but it can be guided. You do not let it take control. You borrow from it, just enough to strengthen what is already yours. Not more, or it will consume you."

Riven's mind raced as he attempted to visualize the energies. Night Wolf energy bright, steady, disciplined. Dark Energy raw, chaotic, like a storm waiting to crash. He extended his hands slightly, and a faint ripple of blue and black intertwined in the space before him. He could feel the pull of the Dark Energy, strong and insistent, but he resisted the temptation to let it overwhelm him.

"Now," Astra said, her voice low, "draw a thread of it in. Just a fraction. Enough to enhance your power, not enough to lose yourself. Feel it flow, amplify what is already yours."

Riven inhaled sharply, focusing. A spark of darkness entered his core, not violent, but potent, brushing against his Night Wolf energy like a wave touching the shore. He felt it pulse, felt his power expand, felt his muscles tense with the surge but his mind remained his own.

"Excellent," Astra said quietly. "Now push it further. Test the balance. You must know precisely how far you can go before the Dark Energy threatens to overtake you."

Riven's body moved instinctively, flowing through the exercises Astra had drilled into him over months. His strikes were faster, his movements sharper, yet he remained centered, tethered by his control over the Night Wolf energy. The Dark Energy flowed around it like an enhancer, subtle but undeniable. He could feel the strength multiplying, a deep, intoxicating power brushing against his consciousness.

"You're doing well," Astra said, watching him. "But remember, the Dark Energy is not yours to dominate only to borrow. If you let it linger, it will twist and consume you. Discipline, Riven. Always discipline."

He nodded, sweat glistening on his brow, heart hammering. "I… I feel it," he said, breathless. "I can sense the increase. It's… incredible."

"Good," Astra said. "Now, integrate it into your fighting. Combine the Night Wolf energy and the Dark Energy seamlessly. Your attacks should feel like themselves, only stronger. You must not even notice the amplification consciously it should flow naturally, instinctively. That is the true mastery."

Riven nodded and moved, striking a practice dummy with precise, measured blows. Each strike carried a subtle pulse of dark energy, amplifying the force without breaking his control. He felt a thrill, the first true sense of power he had ever experienced without the fear of losing himself.

"Again," Astra said, taking her own meditative stance. "And this time, push your endurance. Combine for longer. Feel how your body responds, and know your limits. You are stable enough now, but do not become reckless."

The hours passed like this, a cycle of motion, meditation, and controlled exertion. Riven felt himself reaching the edges of his potential, brushing against the Dark Energy without succumbing to it. He learned to sense its pull, to channel it into the Night Wolf energy, and to let it dissipate when the surge threatened to overwhelm him.

By the time the sun was high in the sky, Riven collapsed onto his back, breathing hard, drenched in sweat but smiling with satisfaction. Astra sat across from him, her hands folded in her lap, her gaze proud but measured.

"You've done well," she said. "This is the beginning, not the end. You will continue to grow, and with discipline, you will one day harness both energies fully. But remember power is nothing without control. Never let temptation override judgment."

Riven nodded, still catching his breath, but his mind was already racing with possibilities. "I understand," he said quietly. "And… I think I can do it."

Astra's smile widened faintly. "I know you can, Riven. That is why I taught you. The world may not yet be ready for the power you wield but when it is, you will be."

For the first time, Riven felt a sense of completeness. His body, mind, and core were aligned. The Dark Energy was no longer a curse he feared, but a tool to be respected, measured, and wielded. And with Astra by his side, guiding him, he knew that the next phase of his growth would be something even the Alpha's system could not account for.

The day ended with quiet meditation, the hum of two energies coexisting within him a testament to his strength, his discipline, and the careful guidance of his mentor. He was no longer just a warrior. He was a master in the making, poised at the threshold of power that even centuries of wolves might never see.
