Chapter 69 - Dead Calm (Extended)

The forest no longer felt like a forest.

What once stood as towering trees and quiet earth had become something else entirely an arena carved by force, reshaped by power far beyond the natural order. The ground was fractured, roots torn from beneath the soil, and the air itself trembled as if struggling to hold together under the pressure of two overwhelming presences.

Riven remained crouched, claws dug deep into the broken earth. His arms trembled not from weakness, but from the sheer force he was resisting. The wind howled violently, tugging at his body, threatening to rip him from the ground entirely.

But he didn't move.

He couldn't.

Because above him

The sky was being torn apart

Kael roared, his voice no longer fully human.

The blood-red aura around him surged violently, expanding outward like a storm given form. It pulsed in irregular bursts, each wave carrying raw, chaotic power that distorted the air and twisted the space around him.

His body shifted again.

Bones cracked. Muscles tightened unnaturally. The claws extending from his hands elongated further, jagged and uneven, dripping with a dark, viscous energy that seemed to devour light itself.

"You think… you can suppress me?" Kael's voice echoed, layered with something deeper, something ancient and wrong. "This power… is beyond your order."

Eryx hovered opposite him, suspended in the air with effortless control.

His golden aura burned steadily not wild, not explosive but contained, dense, like a star compressed into human form. It wrapped around him in smooth, flowing currents, each movement precise, each pulse deliberate.

Where Kael was chaos

Eryx was absolute control.

"You mistake corruption for power," Eryx replied calmly. "What you wield isn't strength. It's instability."

Kael laughed a broken, jagged sound.

"Then let it consume you too!"

He lunged again.

To Riven

It was incomprehensible.

They didn't move like fighters anymore. They moved like forces. Like storms colliding.

Kael's body blurred into motion, vanishing and reappearing in jagged, unpredictable bursts. One moment he was above Eryx, claws descending with crushing force

The next, he twisted midair, striking from below, his movements bending unnaturally as if the rules of motion didn't apply to him.

Eryx responded differently.

He didn't chase speed.

He answered it.

Every time Kael appeared, Eryx was already there. Not faster but perfectly timed. Each movement minimal, efficient, devastating.

CLANG BOOM!

A strike met a counter.

The collision sent a ripple through the sky, distorting the clouds above them.

Another clash

Another explosion of force.

Riven's eyes strained as he tried to follow, but it was like watching lightning fight lightning. His perception lagged behind reality. He saw flashes impacts afterimages.

But not the full motion.

Not yet.

"Focus," Astra's voice cut through the chaos behind him.

Riven didn't turn.

"I'm trying !" he shouted, barely audible over the roaring wind.

"No," Astra said firmly. "You're watching. That's not the same thing."

Her staff remained planted deep in the earth, anchoring her as the shockwaves continued to tear through the forest. Her eyes, however, were fixed on the battle above calm, analytical.

"Feel it," she continued. "Not just with your eyes. With your core."

Riven's breath hitched.

Feel it…?

Another explosion rocked the battlefield, sending a fresh wave crashing through the ground. Riven's claws dug deeper as he forced himself to stay steady.

Then

He closed his eyes.

Just for a moment.

The world shifted.

The noise dulled.

The chaos… clarified.

He could feel it now.

Two massive energy signatures colliding again and again, like tidal waves crashing into each other.

Kael's energy wild, violent, spiking unpredictably. It surged in bursts, expanding outward before collapsing inward, like something constantly on the verge of breaking apart.

Eryx's energy different.

Stable.

Heavy.

Every movement carried intent. No wasted motion. No uncontrolled surge. It flowed like a current steady, unstoppable.

Riven's eyes snapped open.

This time

He saw more.

Kael reappeared above Eryx, both hands raised high, claws extended as he gathered a massive concentration of dark energy. The air warped around him, bending under the pressure.

"DIE!"

He brought both claws down.

Eryx didn't move immediately.

For a split second he waited.

Then

"Deadcalm."

Again.

Everything slowed.

This time, Riven felt it.

The shift in the air. The subtle drop in pressure. The way Kael's overwhelming speed suddenly lost its edge, as if trapped in something unseen.

Eryx stepped forward

And struck.

A single punch.

Not flashy. Not explosive.

Just precise.

It connected with Kael's torso.

And the world broke.

BOOOOOOM!!!

The impact detonated outward in a massive sphere of force. The shockwave carved a path through the forest, flattening everything in its wake. The ground split open, forming deep trenches as the energy tore through it.

Kael's body folded around the strike before being launched backward again this time faster, harder crashing into the mountainside with even greater force than before.

The mountain cracked.

Riven stared.

That wasn't just strength.

That wasn't just speed.

That was… understanding.

Every movement Eryx made had purpose. Timing. Precision.

Nothing wasted.

"Do you see it now?" Astra asked quietly.

Riven swallowed. "Yeah…"

But even as he said it

The mountain erupted again.

A pillar of blood-red energy shot into the sky, splitting the clouds apart.

Kael emerged once more.

But now

He was different.

His form had grown larger, more distorted. Veins of dark energy pulsed visibly beneath his skin, his entire body twitching as if barely holding itself together.

His eyes burned no longer just filled with rage, but something deeper. Something… hollow.

"You… can't suppress this…" he growled. "It's already… consumed me…"

Eryx's expression didn't change.

But his aura did.

The golden light around him intensified not expanding wildly, but condensing further. It became denser, heavier, almost tangible. The ground beneath him cracked under the pressure alone.

"If that's the case," Eryx said, voice calm, "then I'll end it here."

He moved.

Not fast

Instant.

Riven didn't see the motion. Only the result.

Eryx was already in front of Kael.

Their fists collided midair.

BOOOOOOOOOOM!!!

This time, the shockwave was different.

Not just force

Pressure.

The air itself collapsed outward, creating a massive vacuum burst that tore through the forest like a hurricane. Trees were uprooted completely, spinning into the air before being flung across the landscape.

Riven was nearly ripped from the ground.

"Hmmph!"

His claws dug deeper, muscles screaming as he fought to stay anchored. The wind howled past him, strong enough to lift debris, rocks, entire chunks of earth.

Beside him, Astra tightened her grip on her staff, her body leaning into the force.

"Don't let go!" she shouted.

Above

The clash intensified.

Eryx and Kael moved in rapid succession, exchanging blows faster than thunder. Each impact created a burst of energy that rippled outward, stacking shockwave upon shockwave.

Kael swung wildly brutally his attacks fueled by raw destruction.

Eryx countered precisely his strikes landing with calculated force.

One hit.

Two.

Three.

Each one pushed Kael further back.

But Kael didn't stop.

He couldn't.

His power surged uncontrollably, forcing his body to keep moving, to keep fighting, even as it began to tear itself apart.

Riven could see it now.

The cracks.

The instability.

"He's… breaking himself," Riven muttered.

Astra nodded. "That's the cost of power without control."

Another massive clash erupted.

Eryx drove his fist into Kael's side, sending him spiraling downward. Kael crashed into the ground, creating a massive crater upon impact.

Dust and debris filled the air.

For a moment

Silence.

Then

Kael rose again.

Slowly.

Unsteadily.

But still standing.

Riven's heart pounded.

This was it.

This was the level he needed to reach.

Not just strength.

Not just power.

But control.

Precision.

Mastery.

His grip tightened around his twin blades.

"I'm not there yet…" he whispered.

Above the crater, Eryx descended slowly, golden aura still burning steadily around him.

"This is your last chance," he said calmly. "Stand down."

Kael laughed weakly, dark energy flickering around him.

"…Too late…"

Riven watched.

Every second.

Every movement.

Burning it into his mind.

Because this

This was the path forward.

And for the first time

He truly understood what it would take to walk it.
