The summons felt heavier this time.
Lyra knew she shouldn't answer it. Every instinct she had sharpened in the palace warned her that tonight would change something, something she might not be able to undo.
Still, the bond pulled.
Not gently.
Insistently.
She followed it.
The private chamber was dim, lanternlight spilling softly over stone walls. The door shut behind her, the sound final, sealing them into the same space.
He stood near the table this time, not the window.
Waiting.
The bond flared the instant their eyes met, heat rushing through her chest, curling low and sharp. Her wolf surged forward, no longer restless but demanding.
"You shouldn't have come," the Alpha said.
Lyra didn't move. "You shouldn't have called me."
Silence stretched between them, tight and charged. The air felt too thick to breathe properly.
He stepped closer.
One step.
The bond surged violently.
Lyra inhaled sharply, fingers curling at her sides as awareness flooded her senses, him, his power, the strain in his control. She could feel how tightly he was holding himself together.
"Do you feel what you're doing to me?" he asked quietly.
Her voice came out steady, even though her pulse was racing. "You're doing it too."
That broke something.
He closed the distance in two strides, stopping so close her breath caught automatically. She could feel the heat of him, smell his scent, steel and something wild beneath it.
His hand came up, gripping her jaw firmly, tilting her face upward.
"Tell me to stop," he said.
Lyra didn't hesitate.
"Don't."
The bond exploded.
He kissed her.
Not soft.
Not tentative.
It was deep and consuming, a release of tension that had been coiling for weeks. His mouth claimed hers with restrained hunger, as if he were pouring everything he'd been denying into that single act.
Lyra gasped into the kiss, hands rising instinctively to clutch his coat, grounding herself against the surge of sensation. The bond burned hot and alive, humming with approval, with recognition.
He kissed her again.
Slower this time.
Longer.
His grip loosened just enough to let her respond, and she did, tilting into him, lips parting, breath mingling with his. Time blurred. The palace disappeared. There was only heat, pressure, the slow drag of his mouth against hers.
A full minute passed.
Neither of them pulled away.
His hands began to move lower, he cupped her backside and squeezed it. She moaned into the the kiss.
Then he growled, he could smell her arousal, she whimpered.
He tried to stop himself but he could, the bond was making it worse.
When he finally managed to stop, it was only to rest his forehead against hers, breath heavy, control visibly fraying.
"Your very dangerous ," he murmured.
Lyra's lips were still tingling, her wolf purring now instead of pacing. "Why did you stop?"
His hand moved to her waist, gripping just tight enough to remind her how easily he could pull her closer again.
"Because if I do it again," he said hoarsely, "I won't stop at kissing or touching you, it would escalate "
The honesty sent a shiver through her.
Lyra leaned in, brushing her lips against his once more, gentler, but deliberate.
"One minute," she whispered. "That's all."
He kissed her again.
Deeper.
Harder.
Till they both became breathless.
When he finally pulled away this time, he stepped back abruptly, chest rising and falling as he forced control back into place.
"Go," he said. "Before this becomes something I can't undo."
Lyra steadied herself, heart racing, bond still blazing.
She didn't smile.
She didn't apologize.
She simply met his eyes one last time, knowing, certain.
"This changes nothing," she said.
"It changes everything," he replied.
She left the room with her lips still burning and her bond fully awake.
Behind her, the Alpha stood alone, hands clenched, knowing one terrible, undeniable truth.
The bond had crossed from tension into memory.
And neither of them would forget that kiss.
