Chapter 33 - The Breeze Between Them

Chapter Title: "The Breeze Between Them"

The palace gardens were quiet, kissed by moonlight and the soft rustle of wind through the flamevine trees. Princess Kaelenna stepped into the open air, finally free from the watching eyes of court, of duty, of games.

She didn't expect to see him there.

San Qi.

Leaning against the rail of the overlook, his robes flowing gently in the breeze, his golden-silver eyes catching the moon like blades and stars all at once.

For a moment, she hesitated.

But her wolf stirred—not in defense, but in recognition.

Then, it knelt.

She had never felt that before.

Not even with her own blood.

A Moment Too Real

She walked toward him, silent in her approach.

San Qi turned his head slightly, a knowing smile already playing on his lips.

"Couldn't sleep either?" he said softly.

Kaelenna smirked. "Or maybe I just needed a break from nobles who think power is something you inherit, not earn."

He chuckled—deep and low.

Then, without a word, he stepped closer.

And wrapped his arms around her.

Not as an Alpha.

Not as a political betrothal.

But as a man who had walked through fire, and saw in her a stillness that matched his storm.

Her breath caught.

Her wolf, always sharp and proud, folded. Rested.

She leaned into his chest, her head against his shoulder.

For the first time in years, she forgot she was royalty.

She was just a woman.

And he was just San Qi.

His hands were warm. One rested at the small of her back.

The other moved—curious, slow, unapologetic.

Fingers brushed against the curve of her breast, a gentle teasing touch that made her skin bloom with heat.

Her breath trembled—but she didn't pull away.

He laughed, a quiet, rumbling sound.

Then his chin rested on her shoulder, his lips barely brushing her neck.

For that moment—

There was no court.

No enemies.

No politics.

Just them.

Two souls who had been born into war… finally resting.

A soft voice echoed from the edge of the garden:

"Your Highness…"

A maid, nervous, stepping carefully. "The Queen requests your presence… immediately."

Kaelenna didn't move at first. Then, with a slow exhale, she stepped back from San Qi's arms—just enough to meet his eyes.

There was longing there. And understanding.

"I have to go," she whispered.

San Qi nodded. "I know."

She turned—but before she left, she glanced back with a quiet smile.

And for the first time, her voice was not royal. Not guarded.

"Thank you… for giving me a moment of peace."
