Chapter 30 - Chapter 30: Potions and Private Lessons

The morning sun cut through Eldoria's eastern gate like a blade of molten gold, sharp and unforgiving. Alex moved through the lower ward with long, purposeful strides, the iron crown of the Iron Ring tucked away in his satchel beside the bulging purse of tournament gold. His body still ached from the final fight, deep claw gouges across his chest and back scabbed over but pulling with every breath, ribs bruised purple, thigh wound throbbing under fresh bandages, but the Flamefist Gauntlet hummed warmly on his left arm, ruby pulsing faintly as if feeding on his lingering anger. He wore no armor today, only a dark tunic and trousers, longsword sheathed at his hip, cloak thrown over his shoulders to hide the worst of the damage. The city gave him a wide berth; whispers followed in his wake, "Flamefist," "Pit champion," "the one who burned the demonkin," but he ignored them all.

Kaelith was still in the suite, propped on pillows, breathing easier but far from whole. Cracked ribs, dislocated shoulder, torn muscle, and bruised throat, the healing draughts had stopped the bleeding and eased the worst of the pain, but they weren't miracles. She needed something stronger. something high-class and something only the alchemists in the upper ward could brew.

Alex turned down Silverthread Lane, the street narrowing as it climbed toward the gilded district. Shops here sold things most adventurers never touched: crystal vials of liquid starlight, powders distilled from phoenix ash, elixirs that could knit bone in hours instead of weeks. The sign he was looking for hung above a narrow door of black iron and etched glass: Elowen's Crucible – Rare Elixirs & Arcane Remedies.

He pushed inside.

The shop smelled of crushed herbs, molten glass, and something faintly electric, ozone after a storm. Shelves lined every wall, filled with glowing vials in every color: sapphire blues, molten golds, venomous greens, blood reds. A single counter of polished ebony stood at the back; behind it waited Elowen herself.

She was tall, willowy, skin pale as moonlit marble, hair the color of fresh snow falling in loose waves to her waist. Pointed ears peeked through the strands, high elf, old blood. Eyes the color of storm clouds regarded him coolly as he approached. She wore a long robe of midnight silk embroidered with silver runes that shifted when she moved, clinging to a lithe, elegant frame, high breasts, narrow waist, hips that flared just enough to draw the eye.

"Flamefist," she said, voice smooth and precise. "I wondered when you'd come. Word of your victory travels fast."

Alex set the heavy purse on the counter. Gold clinked inside.

"I need something that heals injuries completely with no half-measures."

Elowen's gaze flicked to the purse, then back to his face. She reached beneath the counter, withdrew a small crystal vial no bigger than his thumb. Inside swirled a liquid the color of liquid moonlight, shimmering, pearlescent, with tiny motes of gold drifting through it.

"Essence of Starbloom," she said. "Distilled under a full moon from flowers that only bloom once every century in the high peaks of the Silver Spires. One sip mends bone, muscle, and sinew in hours. Two sips… well, most don't need two."

She slid the vial across the counter.

"Three gold."

Alex opened the purse, took out three gold coins, and pushed them toward her.

Elowen's fingers brushed his as she took the gold, lingering a heartbeat too long. Her storm-cloud eyes met his.

"You paid in blood for that victory," she murmured. "I can smell it on you. And something else… rage. It's intoxicating."

Alex's smiled and pocketed the vial.

"I have business," he said, voice flat.

Elowen smiled, slow, knowing.

"Of course. But if you ever need… more than potions, you know where to find me."

He left without another word.

Back at the Serpent's Coil, the common room was quiet, midday lull. The innkeeper, a stout woman named Veyra with gray-streaked hair and arms like blacksmith's bellows, leaned on the bar polishing tankards. She looked up as Alex entered, eyes flicking over his bandages, the crown-shaped bulge in his satchel, the faint glow still leaking from the Flamefist beneath his cloak.

"Champion," she said, voice dry. "Heard you burned a demonkin to ash last night. Impressive. Though I'm not sure how I feel about my best suite being occupied by someone who smells like barbecue and vengeance."

Alex stopped at the bar, leaned one elbow on the wood, looked her over.

Veyra was in her late forties, broad-shouldered and thick-waisted, but strong, muscles corded from years of hauling barrels and breaking up brawls. Her dark hair was pulled into a messy bun, strands escaping to frame a square-jawed face with sharp cheekbones and hazel eyes that missed nothing. Full breasts strained against her linen shirt; wide hips and thick thighs filled out her breeches; calves bulged in worn boots. Scars crisscrossed her forearms, old knife cuts, burn marks from hot pokers, badges of a life spent running a rowdy inn.

"You've been listening," he said, voice low.

Veyra smirked, set the tankard down.

"Walls are thick, but not that thick. Your beastkin screams like a banshee when you fuck her. And the little redhead moans like she's dying of pleasure. I've heard it all."

Alex's eyes narrowed, then darkened.

"You like listening?"

Veyra's smirk widened.

"I like winners. And you, Flamefist, just won the biggest purse this Pit's seen in years. Makes a woman curious… what kind of techniques a man like you uses to make two women scream that loud."

Alex stepped closer, close enough to smell the ale and leather on her.

"I could show you," he said, quietly. "In private."

Veyra's hazel eyes flicked to the side door behind the bar, then back to him. There was a spark there, a challenge mixed with raw hunger. She'd been teasing him all night, her words laced with curiosity about his reputation, the whispers of how he handled women, how he broke them down and built them back up in ecstasy. Now, in the dim glow of the tavern's lanterns, with the last patrons stumbling out into the night, she was calling his bluff.

"My office," she said, her voice low and throaty, like velvet dragged over gravel. "Five minutes. I'll lock up."

Alex nodded, his pulse quickening. He leaned against the bar, watching her move with that confident sway of her hips, wide, inviting, the kind that promised softness yielding to strength. The tavern emptied, the door bolted shut. Exactly five minutes ticked by on the old clock behind the counter, each second amplifying the heat building in his veins. He pushed through the side door, the wood creaking under his hand.

Veyra's office was a cramped sanctuary of chaos, a wooden desk buried under stacks of yellowed ledgers, invoices fluttering like forgotten secrets. Shelves lined the walls, crammed with dusty bottles of amber liquor, jars of herbs and spices that filled the air with a heady, earthy scent. A single narrow window high on the wall let in a slanted beam of moonlight, casting long shadows that danced across the floorboards.

She stood behind the desk, already shedding her inhibitions along with her clothes. Her shirt hung open, buttons undone to her navel, revealing the swell of her full breasts straining against a simple linen corset. The fabric was thin, almost translucent in the low light, her nipples pebbled and dark, pressing insistently against it. Her breeches were unlaced at the waist, sagging low on her hips, exposing the soft, inviting curve of her belly and the dark, curly triangle of hair that pointed like an arrow to her core.
