Chapter 9 - Chapter 9: Choza Akimichi (1)

[Choza Akimichi P.O.V.]

Choza Akimichi as the future head of the Akimichi clan, he had never pictured himself taking on the role of a jonin sensei so soon.

The Third Great Shinobi War had taken too many lives and left the village short on experienced jonin that could take the role of a Jonin sensei. And that's where Choza came in.

The Hokage himself had called Choza into the office and explained the situation to him. With not many jonin available, someone had to step up and train the new graduates. It was Konoha's tradition to have genin teams with a Jonin sensei to help grow the next generation.

Choza had been given the choice, but it was clear the Hokage expected him to accept.

Choza had thought about it for only a short time before agreeing. It was better than the alternatives.

He did not want to end up like Inoichi Yamanaka, who spent most days locked in the Torture and Interrogation department. Inoichi was always busy reading the minds of captured spies and enemy shinobi. He came home late, if at all, with dark circles under his eyes.

Choza preferred good food and family time over that kind of work. It was also better than his other teammate, Shikaku Nara's position.

As the current jonin commander, Shikaku dealt with endless meetings, mission assignments, and the constant pressure of planning for the war.

Choza liked Shikaku like a brother, but he did not envy the headaches that came with being the brain of the Ino-Shika-Cho trio.

So Choza had accepted the proposition without much complaint. The Hokage assigned him three students.

First was Shiranui Genma from the Shiranui clan. The Shiranui were known for their skill with poisons, and Genma already showed some proficiency in that area. He was also a master at throwing weapons, especially senbon.

Choza had read the reports. The boy could hit moving targets from long distances and often laced his needles with different toxins. It was a dangerous combination for a genin.

Next came Might Guy, the son of Might Duy. Choza had met Duy months ago during a joint mission.

The man had been called the Eternal Genin because he never ranked up, but Choza knew the truth.

Duy was very, very good at taijutsu. His kicks and punches could shatter rocks, and he moved with speed that surprised even seasoned jonin. Choza had seen him in action and knew that Guy was also a master of Taijutsu. Though not yet at his father's level.

He felt that it was a pity that Duty could not be promoted because he could not use ninjutsu.

Now his son stood before Choza with the same fire in his eyes. Guy's hands were covered in thick calluses from endless training which he could see. The boy clearly spent hours every day practicing strikes and forms.

Choza could respect that kind of dedication, even if the constant shouting about youth made him want to smile and sigh at the same time.

The last member of the team was the most unusual. Shunsui Kyoraku was an orphan with no clan name to back him up. In fact, It was the boy that had picked the name for himself at the age of 5 for some reason. Before that he was called Shishi by the Matron of the orphanage.

At first, the boy had not wanted to attend the shinobi academy at all. He had dreamed of becoming a simple farmer. Choza found it a good peaceful dream but alas.

One day an academy assessor had visited the orphanage looking for promising children. They had tested Shunsui and discovered his chakra reserves were immense, far beyond what any normal genin should have.

The assessors had even taken blood samples to check if he had some distant relation to the Uzumaki clan. The results came back negative, but the sheer amount of chakra was impossible to ignore.

Everyone agreed that letting someone with that much potential become a farmer would be a waste. The matron of the orphanage had no choice but to force the issue.

She coerced and punished the boy until he finally joined the academy and started training to become a shinobi.

From the reports the Hokage showed Choza, Shunsui had somehow gotten hold of two fine swords and started training hard in kenjutsu. It seemed that he finally found interest in becoming a shinobi after getting the two swords.

The academy's kenjutsu instructor had praised him highly. The boy was pretty good with blades, especially since he used twin swords. That style was very rare among shinobi. Most preferred a single katana or kunai.

Of course, the boy did not start that good but constant years of training in Kenjutsu made him good with those blades.

Shunsui fought with a daisho pair, a longer tachi and a shorter wakizashi. He was also very dedicated in learning Taijutsu as per the academy Kenjutsu master which was a suprise considering Shunsui did not want to become a shinobi initially fearing that he would get hurt.

Choza had watched the three boys during their ten-minute strategy session. He stayed far enough away not to hear every word, but he could see the way they talked.

Genma took the lead without anyone arguing. That showed good leadership skills. He was no Nara genius, but he could see that he was giving the orders.

Guy nodded along with endless enthusiasm. Shunsui listened quietly, then spoke up about something important. Choza could not hear the details, but he saw the serious look on the boy's face. Whatever it was, it made the other two pay close attention.

The fight started without warning. Guy launched forward like a green streak. Choza caught the flying kick easily, but he felt a small ache in his palm from the force behind it.

Before he could counter, Shunsui moved in from the side. The boy's sword flashed toward Choza's throat in a clean, deadly arc. Choza leaned back just in time to dodge it.

The blade sliced a thin line across his vest collar. Shunsui spun and brought the second sword low, cutting a strip from Choza's pants leg.

Choza knew right then that he was going to pass this trio. It had taken only a minute of fighting to see their potential.
