BWDC:SDDK Chapter 95: The Nearly Finished Batsuit
The sun was beginning to set outside the secret base of Kaito Kid.
Inside, Kuroba Kaito—the world-renowned phantom thief and one of the globe's premier magicians—was currently scrutinizing a disguise mask.
To put it simply, Ren Ichimonji's learning pace was rapid. Much faster than Kaito had anticipated. At this rate, Ren's handcrafted masks would be ready for actual field use in two weeks at the most.
"Are you sure you've never had any foundation in the art of disguise before?" Kaito asked, stroking his chin with a look of genuine confusion. "It's strange. I can see you have a background in magic. Normally, any magician's troupe should carry at least some basic disguise techniques. How is it possible you have zero foundation?"
In response, Ren Ichimonji could only look at him as if he were joking.
Is the magic of your world even the same thing as the magic from my hometown? Since when does magic class involve learning how to sculpt faces?
"Young Master Kaito, Master Ren, here is your juice."
Konosuke Jii, Kuroba's loyal butler, walked into the base carrying a tray. Having served as the "Generation 1.5" Kaito Kid—the temporary bridge between Toichi Kuroba and Kaito—Jii had his own insights into the art of disguise. He looked at the mask Ren had produced and offered his praise.
"Master Ren's talent is far greater than I imagined. If the Master were still active as a magician today and saw a newcomer with such potential, I'm sure he wouldn't be able to resist taking him as a disciple or offering guidance."
Ren was already immune to this. Konosuke Jii was essentially a master of the "Flattery-Flattery Fruit." He praised everything he saw. As the saying goes, one doesn't strike a smiling face; as long as the praise isn't something morbid, a little flattery never hurts anyone.
Ren picked up a glass of juice from the tray and sat on the sofa, checking his watch. It was nearly 9:00 PM. Today's study session was over. Once he finished the drink, he'd head over to Professor Agasa's laboratory to clock in, put some pressure on the adorable Noah's Ark, and then head home to sleep.
However, Kaito, also picking up his juice, brought up serious business.
"The day after tomorrow. I'll be heading to the Suzuki Financial Group's exhibition hall as Kaito Kid to steal the largest pink sapphire in history. Barring any accidents, I'll make my move at 9:00 PM."
The heist notice for two days from now.
Ren recalled it. He had seen it in the headlines, right after the news about the stolen explosives warehouse and the arrival of the world's number one illusionist in Japan.
Kaito drained his juice in one gulp. He held the glass with both hands, leaning forward with a serious expression.
"I've figured it out—the composition of so-called 'illusionism.'"
"I went to the Tokyo Budokan to see the performance by Gunther von Goldberg II, the man called the world's greatest illusionist. You know about that, but I only just realized how he does it today. Light, sound, and smell—the three combined within the confined environment of the Budokan."
"That is how Gunther is able to induce a mass hallucination in everyone present. That's the secret to his 'illusion.'" Kaito continued, "If the illusionist you and Koizumi Akako mentioned really exists, we need to be prepared on all those fronts to face him. I've already custom-ordered an anti-illusion mask equipped with soundproofing and thermal imaging. If you're interested..."
Konosuke Jii, standing nearby, coughed twice.
Then, with a hint of embarrassment, he whispered, "Young Master Kaito... Master Ren uses the same equipment importer as we do."
"When I went to pick up the mask, he happened to be there. He actually saw it last night. You don't need to explain it to him again."
Kaito: "?"
Huh? The same importer? I don't even know who the importer is—I leave all the purchasing to you—and Ren knew who the supplier was before I did?
Kaito was struck silent. After a long pause, he finally spoke.
"Anyway, I'll try to set my escape route through the outdoors as much as possible. I'll leave the rest to you, Ren."
"Is that all?" Ren nodded slightly. "I'll handle it."
Late night, Professor Agasa's laboratory.
Just like the previous nights since Ren arrived in Beika Town, he showed up for his appointment. However, tonight, Professor Agasa seemed a bit different than usual. He was sitting on the sofa, his face flushed with a healthy glow, lost in thought.
Accustomed to this, Ren prepared to bypass the Professor to continue stressing the Noah's Ark program. This time, he intended to use the local programming environment to attempt a reverse intrusion into the main body of Noah's Ark, located in the database of the Schindora Corporation across the ocean.
Before that, Ren also wanted to patrol the Tokyo District Public Prosecutors Office's database to see if the "Pacific Buoy" Age-Correction Recognition System had officially launched, and to check the movement logs for Miyano Akemi.
But just as Ren was about to enter the room, the Professor's "programmer's intuition" kicked in, and he snapped back to reality.
He turned around and called out to Ren, "Wait a minute! Don't be in such a hurry to borrow the computer!"
"I have some good news and some even better news for you. Which do you want to hear first?"
Ren: "?"
Ren stared at the Professor for a moment before asking, "Tell me the good news first."
At the mention of the good news, Agasa's face lit up with excitement. "The good news is that Jack has arranged everything! Tomorrow, I'll have a 'chance encounter' with Fusae. We'll talk about how we've been, and I'll get to try a brand-new experience I've never had before!"
Ren was somewhat surprised. He hadn't expected this "Jack" to be so efficient—to arrange a meeting in less than a week was impressive. He then asked, "And the even better news?"
Hearing this, Professor Agasa stood up immediately. He led Ren toward his research room and suddenly yanked back a black curtain.
Looking at the black Batsuit inside, Agasa said excitedly:
"The even better news is that your Batsuit is almost finished! It'll take one more day at most. That means, by the day after tomorrow at the latest, your Batsuit will be ready for actual use!"
Is that so?
A Batsuit truly capable of combat?
A faint smile played on the corners of Ren's mouth. This was, indeed, good news.
