Chapter 51 — The Academy's Mini-Competition Begins

The morning sun stretched across the sprawling grounds of Valdyr Academy, casting long shadows between the towering spires and neatly trimmed gardens. Today wasn't just any day—it was the day of the academy's long-awaited mini-competition, a friendly face-off between the middle-class section and the elite high-class section. For most students, the excitement was palpable; for Kael, it was just another day of observing and calculating.

Walking into the assembly hall, Kael kept his expression neutral, shoulders relaxed, hands tucked loosely into his uniform pockets. Around him, whispers and nervous shuffling echoed. Middle-class students fidgeted anxiously, glancing toward the imposing doors where the high-class section would soon appear.

Lyra, Aria, and Liora flanked him subtly, their presence a warm buffer against the rising tension.

"Don't underestimate them," Lyra whispered, a mischievous glint in her eyes. "Some of these kids are prodigies."

Kael's lips curved into a faint, knowing smile. "I know. I just won't make it obvious."

Aria nudged him with her elbow, playful but supportive. "Just… try not to get humiliated by your siblings again, alright?"

Liora's hand brushed briefly against his arm. "Even if you do, we've got your back. Just focus."

Kael glanced at them, internalizing the affection without a word. He appreciated the support, but he had plans of his own. Today, he wouldn't dominate—he'd perform well, enough to keep his abilities under wraps, yet still impress his classmates subtly.

A sudden hush fell over the assembly as the massive doors creaked open. The elite section entered, their presence dripping with confidence, wealth, and arrogance. Among them were Kael's older siblings, Caius, Lucien, and Selene. They paused mid-step when their eyes landed on him, and for a heartbeat, disbelief painted their faces.

"That… can't be him," Caius hissed under his breath, jaw tight. "The deadbeat younger brother, at the same academy?"

Lucien smirked, more sarcastic than angry. "Looks like he finally crawled out from under the family disgrace label. Or maybe he's here to embarrass himself further."

Selene, elegant as ever, simply arched an eyebrow, her eyes narrowing. "He's… here. Among students who actually matter. How unfortunate."

Kael noticed none of it. His gaze swept over both sections, noting their expressions, their posture, and the subtle hints of strength in some of the elite students. He remained calm, almost casual, exuding the quiet confidence that unsettled anyone trying too hard to impress.

"Good morning, students!" the headmaster's voice rang out, pulling everyone's attention forward. "Today's mini-competition is designed to test skill, agility, and teamwork. The middle-class section will face the high-class section in a series of challenges. Remember, this is friendly, but pride and honor are at stake!"

Whispers erupted immediately. Middle-class students exchanged nervous glances; some muttered about elite arrogance, while others tried to psych themselves up. Kael simply adjusted his stance, analyzing the assembly hall, the course layout, and the potential threats and distractions.

As the first round of obstacle courses began, Kael moved with fluid grace. He didn't sprint ahead or perform flashy moves; instead, he completed each task efficiently and quietly. Rope swings, balance beams, and climbing walls—Kael handled each one with precision, just enough to look competent without drawing the sort of attention that would have faculty or elite students taking detailed notice.

From the sidelines, Lyra cheered with exaggerated enthusiasm. "Come on, Kael! Show them what you've got!"

Aria leaned closer to Liora, whispering with a teasing grin, "He's… really calm. Even when they try to provoke him."

Liora's eyes softened. "That's because he doesn't need to prove anything. But I like seeing him focused. It's… kind of reassuring."

The playful whispers and subtle touches between the three girls drew a few curious glances, but Kael didn't notice; his attention remained partially on the course, partially on scanning elite students and his siblings. Caius, frustrated by Kael's calm efficiency, leaned toward Lucien.

"He's holding back," Caius spat quietly. "No one can move like that without training beyond what we know. We need to embarrass him—now."

Lucien's smirk faltered slightly. "Careful. Too obvious, and the faculty might intervene. We need subtlety."

Selene simply observed, her gaze sharp. "Don't underestimate him. He's… changed. Watch and learn, brothers."

Despite their schemes, Kael continued performing just well enough to maintain composure, quietly impressing his classmates without drawing the spotlight. By the end of the day's obstacle challenges, middle-class students began whispering about his competence, while the elite section dismissed him as just "quietly efficient."

The sibling frustration grew in equal measure. Caius clenched his fists. "This isn't over. We need to make a move before he becomes… too comfortable here."

As the final bell rang, signaling the end of the first day's competition, Kael collected his things, glancing briefly at Lyra, Aria, and Liora. Their smiles and quiet encouragement bolstered his calm exterior.

Later, the siblings gathered privately, walking swiftly through the elite section's halls toward their father.

"He's at the same academy as us," Caius seethed. "The deadbeat, the failure… he's here, and he's performing well enough to make us look foolish. This cannot stand."

Lucien's eyes gleamed with mischief. "Father should know. Perhaps… some guidance is required to ensure he doesn't embarrass the family further."

Selene nodded, calm but resolute. "It's time he's removed. Subtly. Discreetly. But efficiently."

Their father, Darius Ashborne, leaned back in his chair, steepling his fingers. His gaze was cold yet contemplative, his mind already turning over possibilities.

"Interesting," he murmured, a small smirk tugging at his lips. "I've been expecting him to cause trouble… and yet, he's far more capable than I anticipated. Perhaps it's time to see just how far he'll go."

The room fell silent, the weight of unspoken intentions hanging heavy in the air. Outside, the academy grounds glowed in the afternoon sun, blissfully unaware of the storm brewing within one of Valdyr's most prestigious families.
