Chapter 10 - Ch 10 The Exhibition

The duel grounds were full.

Too full for something labeled optional.

Stone tiers rose in a wide arc, packed with students, instructors, and more than a few observers who had no official reason to be there. Wards shimmered faintly over the arena, layered thick enough to survive accidentsand thin enough to observe everything.

Ryomen stood at the edge of the ring, wooden sword in hand.

They want a reaction, he noted calmly. Not a victory.

Across from him, his opponent rolled his shoulders.

Caldren Viremont.

Upper noble. Aura-enhanced swordsman. Ranked high enough to be respected, low enough to be used.

Caldren grinned. "No offense, Your Highness. But I don't plan to lose."

Ryomen inclined his head. "Nor should you."

The instructor raised a hand.

"Begin."

Caldren moved first.

Aura flaredcontrolled, disciplined, sharp. His blade cut a clean arc through the air, pressure snapping like a whip. The crowd murmured appreciatively.

Ryomen stepped back.

Not fast.

Late.

Steel skimmed past his chest, close enough to tug fabric. A calculated miss.

Gasps.

Caldren pressed, confidence surging. He chained strikes together, aura reinforcing each motion, forcing Ryomen into retreat.

Ryomen let it happen.

He adjusted footwork. Shortened steps. Slight imbalance on purpose.

Sell it.

A strike clipped his shoulder.

Not deep.

Enough.

The crowd stirred.

"He's losing"

"No, he'swait"

Ryomen exhaled slowly.

Then he stopped retreating.

Caldren's next strike came downperfect angle, textbook execution.

Ryomen shifted half a step to the left.

The strike missed.

Not because it was slow.

Because the moment where it should have landed… didn't exist anymore.

Ryomen tapped Caldrens's wrist.

Once.

Caldren froze.

The instructor blinked.

"…Point to Arker."

The crowd fell silent.

Caldren stared at his hand, then up at Ryomen. "How?"

Ryomen met his gaze, expression calm.

"You overcommitted."

That was true.

Just not in the way anyone understood.

Aurelyx Val'Drath

Aurelyx leaned forward, tail lashing once behind her.

That wasn't technique.

That wasn't timing.

That was permission.

The world had allowed him that point.

She laughed quietly, a sound like distant fire.

Caldren shook himself and grinned, fire returning to his eyes. "Again."

The instructor hesitated.

Then nodded. "Continue."

This time, Ryomen moved first.

Not faster.

Cleaner.

His blade traced a simple line, no flourish, no aura. Caldren parriedsuccessfullybut his stance shifted by a fraction.

Enough.

Ryomen's next strike ended at Caldren's throat.

He stopped there.

The ward flared.

"Match concluded," the instructor announced quickly. "WinnerRyomen vi Arker."

The crowd erupted.

Not cheers.

Arguments.

Speculation.

Fear disguised as excitement.

Ryomen stepped back and bowed once.

That's enough, he thought. Any more and the seal complains.

Seraphina Noctyra

Seraphina clapped slowly, eyes never leaving him.

"He's careful," she murmured. "How considerate."

Someone nearby laughed nervously. "Careful?"

Seraphina smiled. "Of us."

After Dispersal

Students poured out of the arena, voices buzzing.

Ryomen walked alone toward the quieter corridors.

He made it halfway before a voice stopped him.

"You let him touch you."

Elowen stood near a pillar, arms folded tight.

"Yes," Ryomen said.

"You didn't have to."

"No," he agreed. "I wanted to."

She studied him, then shook her head. "You're shaping perception."

"Yes."

"That's dangerous."

"So is the truth."

Silence stretched between them.

Finally, she said, "When you're ready… I want to understand."

Ryomen looked at herreally looked.

"Then don't rush," he said gently. "Understanding has a cost."

She nodded once and stepped aside.

That Night

Ryomen stood at his window, academy lights dim below.

The exhibition had done what it needed to do.

He was no longer invisible.

But he wasn't a monster either.

Just… uncertain.

The seal within him hummedrestless, but stable.

For now.

Far away, something old and patient adjusted its plans.

And somewhere between observation and inevitability, Ryomen vi Arker smiled faintly.

"Alright," he murmured.

"Your move."
