The game-based ability he'd inherited came from a niche game that had only recently launched. Because the game was so new, the developers held a promotional event, sponsoring a lucky player with a million's worth of Krypton Gold. This was also why one of the company's backup servers ended up in his apartment building.
The man had learned about this after the apocalypse began, from documents he found on the floor where the server was located.
