The doctor on duty would be back around ten o'clock. It was nine now, and Erin Lowell packed her things, ready to leave.
Before leaving, she glanced at the bed and saw Zane Jennings still had his head buried under the covers, unable to get any fresh air.
She put her things down, went back to the bed, and pulled away a corner of the blanket, revealing his face.
Zane Jennings's face was pale, his forehead covered in sweat. His lips were colorless, and his breathing was rapid.
"Zane."
She called his name several times, but there was no response.
Erin Lowell reached out to touch his forehead. 'His condition has worsened.'
His eyes fluttered open, weak and listless. They were completely bloodshot as he stared blankly at her. "Erin."
Erin answered him, then touched the back of his hand. It was frighteningly hot.
"I feel awful." Zane reached out, searching for the cool sensation from a moment ago. Erin offered her hand. He grasped it, pulled it to his neck, and held it there.
