Chapter 9 - Chapter 9: It's Grandma Biting You, Right Next to You

"I really underestimated how shameless you are. Let me tell you, I will absolutely, positively not donate my bone marrow. You can just stand there and watch her die. What does her life or death have to do with me?"

Once she was free again, Jane Sterling's tears streamed down her face.

But she wasn't crying because of what these two had done. She was just filled with regret—regret for being so soft-hearted.

If she had been a little tougher, she would have just refused or called the police. Forcing someone to donate bone marrow was a crime, after all.

Once she reported this to the police, these two would be in for a world of hurt.

Cowering in the corner, Sharon Shelby was in no mood to pay attention to Jane's words.

Suddenly, she felt something bite her right hand again.

She shrieked in terror. The ice-cold sensation bit viciously into her right arm, sending a paralyzing numbness through her entire body.

"A ghost! There's a ghost! A ghost!"

Overwhelmed by the dual shock, Sharon Shelby let out a bloodcurdling scream.

Charles Sterling also saw the bite marks appear out of nowhere.

He was terrified too, but he knew they couldn't risk bringing the doctors and nurses back here.

He quickly clamped his hand over Sharon Shelby's mouth and nose. Sharon Shelby stared at Charles Sterling, her eyes wide with terror, muffled whimpers escaping her lips.

Charles Sterling's scalp prickled with fear.

"What is going on?"

More and more bloody bite marks appeared on Sharon Shelby's arm. They looked agonizing, as if something was tearing viciously into her flesh.

Blood dripped onto the floor, a gruesome sight.

Jane calmed down, though she still held the fruit knife tightly in front of her.

Her emotions had settled, but her eyes turned red once more.

She saw her beloved grandmother, now a ferocious specter, relentlessly tearing at Sharon Shelby's arms, neck, and hair.

This was a completely different sight from the one she'd seen upon first entering the room.

Now, her grandmother was shrouded in a black mist. Her eyes were solid crimson, and fresh blood dripped from their corners. Her lips moved, muttering something.

"Bitch... You bitch! You bully my granddaughter, you're courting death!"

Her words were slurred and indistinct, like those of a deaf-mute person struggling to speak for the first time.

Jane was suddenly reminded of the folk tales she'd read.

When a person dies and becomes a ghost, they wander the earth if they don't enter the cycle of reincarnation.

Eventually, they forget who they are and lose the ability to speak.

'Grandma has been gone for so many years. Her last shred of sanity must be focused on protecting me. That's why she's become like this...'

At that thought, Jane's tears burst forth once more.

She couldn't stop herself from shouting at the grandmother who was relentlessly attacking Sharon Shelby.

"Grandma, she's not worth it! If you really kill her, you'll never be able to reincarnate! I don't want that for you!"

Her words stunned not only Charles Sterling and Sharon Shelby but also the female ghost relentlessly attacking Sharon. She froze.

Blood still dripped from her eyes as she stared blankly at Jane.

"Jane...."

Jane nodded emphatically. "Grandma, it's me. Please, stop. I'll call the police about what they're doing to me. But you, Grandma... you have to be okay!"

Jane didn't know why, and she didn't understand the rules of The Underworld.

But right now, she couldn't bear the thought of anything happening to her grandmother.

Grandma was already dead; she couldn't bear to watch her die a second time.

She had a gut feeling that if her grandmother really hurt Sharon Shelby, her grandmother would suffer the consequences.

Charles Sterling saw Jane talking to an empty wall next to Sharon Shelby. Alarmed and infuriated by the bizarre scene, he pointed at her and began to yell.

"You little bitch! Stop with the hocus-pocus! Have you gone insane?!"

But a moment later, a sinister smile spread across Charles Sterling's face. It was unclear what occurred to him, but he muttered in a low voice.

"Actually, crazy is good. No one believes a madwoman. That way, no one will ever know what we did today..."

With that, Charles Sterling began to laugh to himself.

Seeing this, the ghost beside them bared her ghastly fangs and prepared to lunge at Charles Sterling.

Jane stopped her. "Grandma, don't! He's your son!"

The ghost froze again, staring blankly at Jane as if to ask a question.

'A son? What son?'

'Do I have a son?'

'I only remember having a granddaughter. Where would a son come from?'

"Idiot Host! Get to the store and buy a Soul Capturing Bag, now! You need to put all the ghosts in here into it, or there's going to be trouble!"

Bianca's voice exploded in Jane's mind, jolting her with a start.

She quickly opened her phone, went to the in-game store, and looked at the soul-binding bags.

My god, that Soul Capturing Bag cost 200,000 M Coin!

'Is this a robbery?!'

Jane sighed. 'Forget it.' Looking at the chaotic scene before her, she figured 200,000 was a price she had to pay.

After buying it, she read the instructions.

She took the soul-binding bag out of her pocket and held it open.

"Fiends lose courage, specters lose form! Collect!"

Jane was amazed to see the souls floating in the air deflate like punctured balloons and stream into the Soul Collection Bag.

In a flash, the once-crowded room felt spacious again.

Jane quickly tied the soul-binding bag shut and tucked it into her purse.

Then she turned to Charles Sterling and Sharon Shelby, who were scared witless, and said nonchalantly.

"Oh, it was nothing. You were just surrounded by ghosts. Mom, those bites on your arm? That was Grandma. From the looks of it, she wanted to eat you alive."

Jane's tone was breezy, but to Sharon Shelby, her words were a death knell. She immediately started screaming again.

"AHHH—"

"It wasn't me! I didn't do it! It has nothing to do with me!"

Charles Sterling watched Sharon Shelby's frantic display, frowned, and snapped.

"What nonsense are you spouting? Your grandmother died long ago!"

Jane smirked.

"I'm not talking nonsense. Grandma was right beside her. Where else would those bite marks on her arm have come from? She couldn't have bitten herself, could she?"

'Of course she couldn't have bitten herself.' Everything had happened right before Charles Sterling's eyes.

He had seen the rows of bite marks appear on Sharon Shelby's arm out of thin air.

The more he thought about it, the more the goosebumps crawled over his skin.

He hung his head, seeming to half-believe Jane's words.

"But... why would Mom bite Sharon?"

Jane wanted to know, too.

She opened the soul-binding bag and saw her grandmother's soul inside.

Jane hesitated for a moment before speaking, her voice tentative.

"Grandma, do you still remember me?"
