[IRIS POV]
Treason. Beta Basil's last word echoed in the air, and my face went pale. Being accused of treason was one of the worst crimes a werewolf could commit. Punishments ranged from public flogging to decapitation, or being branded on your face and banished to live the rest of your life as a rogue.
"I didn't commit treason!" I protested heatedly. "It was just… just an argument that got out of hand!"
My eyes darted to Yvette. I was literally parroting what she said earlier. Surely she wouldn't hate me to the point of wanting me branded for treason!
Yvette, sensing my gaze, only quirked her lips to give me the most minuscule of smirks before letting out a breathy, fragile sigh. She had an expression of abject misery as she nodded.
"That's right, Daddy… It's okay…" Yvette said softly. It made it look like I had threatened her to say so.
My heart sank further. To make matters worse, Yvette's eyes fluttered shut, and she swayed on her feet. Her voice grew fainter.
