Chapter 31 - Chapter 31 - The Alpha's Silence

The second day of training drew a larger crowd.

Word spread quickly in a wolf pack.

Especially when something unusual happened.

And Hazel was very unusual.

The clearing buzzed with quiet conversations as wolves gathered along the edges.

Some curious.

Some skeptical.

Some impressed.

Hazel stepped into the center with calm confidence.

She noticed the difference immediately.

The whispers had changed.

Yesterday they questioned her.

Today they watched her.

Ryan stood near the edge of the clearing.

Arms folded.

Silent.

Observing.

Hazel didn't look at him.

Not even once.

But she felt him.

Like a weight behind her spine.

Liam stepped forward.

"We continue control training," he announced.

Hazel nodded.

"Same exercise?"

"Stronger this time."

Hazel exhaled slowly.

The mark on her wrist pulsed once.

A faint glow slipped through the fabric covering it.

Several wolves leaned forward.

"Focus," Liam instructed.

Hazel closed her eyes.

The forest opened to her senses again.

Wind through branches.

Footsteps shifting.

Heartbeats.

So many heartbeats.

One still louder than the rest.

Ryan's.

She pushed the sound away.

Energy stirred beneath her skin.

This time it came faster.

Stronger.

The ground beneath her feet trembled.

Not violently.

Powerfully.

A ring of loose dirt lifted slightly from the earth around her.

Gasps rippled through the watching wolves.

Liam raised a hand.

"Hold it."

Hazel clenched her jaw.

The air thickened.

Branches above them rustled as if pushed by invisible pressure.

Then—

She released it.

The energy burst outward like a controlled shockwave.

Not destructive.

But undeniable.

Several wolves staggered back again.

One of them laughed.

"Damn."

The clearing filled with impressed murmurs.

Hazel opened her eyes slowly.

Golden flickers faded from her irises.

Liam grinned slightly.

"Control achieved."

Sera crossed her arms, studying Hazel.

"Faster progress than expected."

Hazel shrugged lightly.

"Guess I'm a fast learner."

Her voice carried confidence now.

Not arrogance.

Ownership.

Ryan watched everything silently.

Venom stirred with dark satisfaction.

She grows stronger in our territory.

Blade murmured.

She grows stronger away from us.

Ralph remained thoughtful.

She grows stronger for herself.

Hazel stepped away from the center.

Several younger wolves approached her immediately.

Questions.

Curiosity.

Excitement.

"How did that feel?"

"Did you mean to lift the dirt like that?"

"Can you control wind too?"

Hazel answered easily.

Relaxed.

Engaging.

One of the wolves laughed at something she said.

Ryan's gaze hardened slightly.

Not jealousy.

Something sharper.

Awareness.

She was integrating into the pack.

Without him.

Sera stepped closer to Ryan.

"You see it too," she murmured.

Ryan didn't respond.

"She's earning their respect."

"I expected that."

"But not like this."

Ryan's eyes remained on Hazel.

Who was currently demonstrating a smaller energy pulse for two curious wolves.

Sera continued quietly.

"She speaks to them. Laughs with them."

Ryan said nothing.

"She avoids you."

That part landed.

Ryan's jaw flexed slightly.

Sera tilted her head.

"You could force the issue."

Ryan's voice was calm.

"I don't force loyalty."

"That's not loyalty," Sera replied.

"That's something else."

Ryan didn't answer.

Across the clearing, Hazel finished explaining something and turned—

And for the first time since training began—

Her eyes met Ryan's.

Just briefly.

A second.

Maybe less.

No warmth.

No anger.

Just distance.

Then she looked away again.

The silence between them deepened.

Liam noticed.

Of course he did.

He walked toward Ryan.

"You're letting this go too far."

Ryan didn't look at him.

"She needs time."

"She needs truth."

Ryan's eyes darkened slightly.

"That will come."

Liam lowered his voice.

"If she learns it from someone else first, you lose her trust completely."

Ryan finally looked at him.

"I never had her trust."

Liam exhaled slowly.

"Then maybe start earning it."

Across the clearing, Hazel brushed dirt from her hands.

She could still feel Ryan watching.

She hated that she noticed.

Hated that some part of her reacted to it.

But she refused to show it.

Because until she knew the full truth about the contract—

Ryan Smith was not someone she could trust.

Even if the mark on her wrist pulsed every time he came near.

The wind picked up suddenly.

Stronger than before.

Hazel frowned slightly.

That wasn't her power.

The wolves noticed too.

Sera's head snapped toward the tree line.

Ryan's posture changed instantly.

Every instinct sharpened.

Venom went quiet.

Blade sharpened.

Ralph rose fully.

"Something's wrong," Liam said.

The forest beyond the clearing went silent.

No birds.

No insects.

Nothing.

Hazel felt the mark burn suddenly.

Hard.

Pain shot through her arm.

She gasped.

Ryan moved toward her instinctively—

Hazel stepped back again.

The rejection was automatic.

But this time…

Ryan didn't stop moving.

Because the trees at the edge of the clearing began to move.

Not wind.

Something stepping through them.

Slow.

Confident.

Watching.

And whatever it was—

Every wolf in the pack felt the same thing at the same time.

Predator.

Ryan's eyes darkened as he stepped slightly in front of Hazel.

Not touching her.

But shielding her.

Venom whispered coldly inside him.

The hunt has begun.

And from the forest…

A deep voice echoed calmly.

"So this is the Eclipse heir."

The Devourer had arrived.
