Chapter 25 - CHAPTER-08: THE SILENCE BEFORE THE STORM

"War is not born when the first blade is drawn. It is born when hearts choose different paths."

— Ancient Heavenly Proverb

The heavens had never been so silent.

It was a silence that did not comfort.

It suffocated.

Far above the endless sea of clouds, where floating continents drifted beneath the radiant sky, the greatest battlefield in Heaven had finally awakened. The Plains of Eternity stretched beyond the horizon, vast enough to accommodate entire civilizations. Ancient white stone covered the land, engraved with countless runes left behind by generations of gods whose names had long faded into myth. Rivers of celestial energy flowed beneath the transparent ground like glowing veins, illuminating the battlefield with an ethereal light.

Today, those ancient runes would witness something they had never recorded before.

Brother would raise his weapon against brother.

At the eastern edge of the battlefield stood an army unlike anything Heaven had assembled since the Age of Creation.

Thousands upon thousands of celestial soldiers waited in perfect formation.

Each warrior wore gleaming silver armor engraved with symbols representing the realm they served. Long capes fluttered behind them despite the complete absence of wind. Spears stood upright like an endless forest of polished steel, their tips reflecting the pale morning light.

Above them floated enormous banners bearing the ancient insignia of Heaven.

The Sky.

The Sun.

The Moon.

Knowledge.

Several other loyal realms.

Each banner waved proudly, refusing to bow even before the weight of destiny itself.

Not a single soldier spoke.

Not one.

The only sound came from the quiet clinking of armor as warriors tightened their grips around their weapons.

At the very front of the formation stood three figures.

Kaito.

Daniel.

Knowledge.

Kaito wore midnight-blue samurai armor trimmed with radiant gold. His long white cloak drifted gently behind him, while his golden spear rested quietly beside him, its light calmer than it had ever been before.

The arrogant prince who once demanded obedience had disappeared.

In his place stood a warrior.

Scars from his battle against Fire and Water remained visible across his face and arms. They had not healed completely, nor had he bothered to hide them.

He welcomed them.

They reminded him that strength was earned.

Not inherited.

Beside him stood Daniel, the Moon God.

His familiar sheriff's hat rested comfortably upon his head while his long black coat swayed softly behind him. Two silver revolvers hung at his waist, each engraved with intricate lunar symbols that shimmered faintly beneath the sunlight.

Daniel adjusted one glove before letting out a slow breath.

"So..."

He smiled faintly without looking away from the opposing army.

"I guess this is really happening."

Kaito crossed his arms.

"It is."

Daniel chuckled quietly.

"You know..."

"I imagined our reunion differently."

Kaito glanced toward him.

"I did too."

"I thought we'd be arguing."

"We already did."

"I thought you'd punch me."

"I considered it."

Daniel laughed.

"There he is."

"What?"

"The old Kaito."

For the first time in what felt like years...

Kaito smiled.

Only slightly.

Only for a moment.

Knowledge observed the exchange from the corner of his eye before adjusting his bronze monocle.

"'Tis agreeable to witness that thy friendship hath survived thy collective foolishness."

Daniel sighed dramatically.

"He never stops talking like that."

"Nay."

Knowledge answered immediately.

"Nor shall I begin."

Daniel looked toward Kaito.

"I forgot how impossible he is."

Kaito nodded once.

"You get used to it."

Knowledge planted his clockwork staff gently upon the white stone beneath him.

"Thee mistake persistence for impossibility."

Daniel opened his mouth to argue before ultimately giving up.

"...Fair enough."

The old god smiled triumphantly.

"I am pleased that wisdom hath at last found one amongst thee."

A few nearby soldiers quietly covered their smiles.

Even in the shadow of war...

Knowledge somehow managed to make the atmosphere lighter.

Only for a moment.

His expression gradually became serious once more.

He looked across the battlefield.

Far beyond the endless plain...

Another army stood waiting.

Unlike Heaven's orderly formation, theirs resembled the raw forces of nature itself.

Crimson banners bearing the blazing emblem of Fire stood proudly at the center.

Beside them flew deep sapphire standards marked with flowing rivers.

Around those two gathered every god who had chosen to reject the authority of the Heavenly Throne.

The Earth God's army resembled an unbreakable fortress.

Thousands of massive warriors clad in stone armor stood shoulder to shoulder, each carrying colossal shields carved directly from sacred mountains.

Behind them floated the Wind Goddess's forces.

Swift.

Silent.

Graceful.

They hovered above the battlefield upon currents of air, bows already drawn, arrows shimmering with compressed storms.

Further back waited the Forest Goddess and her followers, their armor woven from ancient roots and celestial vines.

Metal.

Crystal.

Lightning.

Countless divine realms had chosen their side.

Not because they hated Heaven.

Because they no longer believed in it.

Standing at the front of that vast alliance...

The Fire God folded his arms.

His crimson cloak danced behind him like living flame.

The fury that once burned recklessly within his eyes had settled into something colder.

Resolve.

Beside him stood the Water God.

Calm as ever.

Hands resting behind his back.

His expression revealed nothing.

Yet his gaze remained fixed upon the opposite side of the battlefield.

Upon Knowledge.

Upon Kaito.

Upon Daniel.

He quietly observed every movement.

Every breath.

Every heartbeat.

The Fire God finally broke the silence.

"So..."

"They came."

Water nodded.

"They always would."

"The old man too."

"He would never abandon his students."

Fire clicked his tongue.

"Annoying."

Water looked toward him.

"You respect him."

"I respect strength."

"And?"

Fire looked directly at Knowledge.

"I've never defeated him."

Water remained silent.

Fire continued.

"Not even close."

A brief pause followed.

Then Water spoke calmly.

"You never will."

Fire smirked.

"I know."

The answer carried neither shame nor frustration.

Only acceptance.

Knowledge belonged to another era.

An era that had produced legends rather than rulers.

An era whose strength still cast shadows upon the present.

The Fire God shifted his gaze toward Kaito.

"He's different."

Water nodded once.

"The defeat changed him."

"Good."

Fire's fists tightened.

"It means today's battle might actually be interesting."

The silence returned.

Both armies simply watched one another.

Thousands of warriors.

Thousands of weapons.

Thousands of lives waiting for a single command.

No birds crossed the sky.

No rivers could be heard.

Even the clouds drifting above the battlefield appeared reluctant to move.

It was as though Heaven itself feared what was about to happen.

Knowledge slowly stepped forward until he stood several paces ahead of his own army.

He did not raise his voice.

Yet every soldier heard him perfectly.

"'Tis easy to despise those who stand opposite thee."

"'Tis far more difficult to remember that yesterday... they stood beside thee."

He looked toward every warrior gathered behind him.

"Forget not."

"The blood ye spill this day..."

"...shall be the blood of brethren."

No one answered.

No one needed to.

Every soldier understood.

Knowledge closed his eyes briefly.

Then, with a slow motion, he lifted his clockwork staff toward the heavens.

Far across the battlefield...

The Fire God raised his own arm.

The signal had come.

The armies tightened their formations.

Thousands of weapons lowered into battle stances.

The first horn began to rise.

The silence...

Was finally ending.

The first note of the war horn echoed across the Plains of Eternity.

Its deep, ancient cry rolled through the heavens like the awakening of a forgotten titan. Mountains answered with trembling echoes. Rivers of celestial energy shimmered beneath the transparent stone, their once tranquil glow pulsing with restless anticipation.

For a single heartbeat...

No one moved.

Then both armies answered.

Thousands of boots struck the sacred ground in perfect unison.

The sound was unlike thunder.

It was heavier.

It was the sound of history taking its first irreversible step.

The banners of Heaven surged forward, their embroidered symbols dancing proudly against the brilliant sky. Spears lowered together, shields locked into disciplined formations, and countless divine weapons caught the sunlight until the battlefield appeared to glitter beneath an endless sea of steel.

From the opposite side, the allied realms answered with equal resolve.

The crimson standards of Fire advanced first.

Beside them flowed the sapphire banners of Water, moving with calm elegance despite the approaching war. The Earth God's colossal soldiers marched like living mountains, every synchronized step causing the floating continent beneath them to shudder. Above their heads, the Wind Goddess's archers drifted upon invisible currents, drawing shimmering bows without a single wasted motion.

The distance between both armies slowly began to disappear.

Neither side shouted.

No battle cries.

No insults.

Only determined silence.

Every warrior understood that the first clash would forever stain Heaven's history.

At the very front of the loyalist army, Kaito rested his hand upon the shaft of his golden spear.

His breathing remained steady.

His heartbeat did not.

Daniel noticed.

Without looking away from the enemy, he spoke quietly.

"Nervous?"

Kaito answered after a brief silence.

"...No."

Daniel smirked.

"Liar."

Kaito finally looked toward him.

"I'm not afraid of losing."

Daniel nodded.

"I know."

"I'm afraid..."

Kaito's voice lowered.

"...that they're right."

Daniel's smile disappeared.

Kaito looked across the battlefield toward Fire and Water.

"What if Heaven truly failed them?"

"What if we protected nothing but an empty throne?"

"What if..."

He tightened his grip around the spear until his knuckles turned pale.

"...we're the ones standing on the wrong side?"

Daniel remained silent for several moments.

Finally, he adjusted the brim of his sheriff's hat before answering.

"I don't know."

Kaito blinked.

"You don't?"

Daniel laughed softly.

"No."

"I stopped pretending I know what's right a long time ago."

He looked toward the marching army ahead.

"I just know who I trust."

His eyes shifted toward Knowledge.

"That old man."

Then toward Kaito.

"And you."

A faint smile appeared upon Kaito's face.

"...Thank you."

Daniel shrugged.

"Don't make it emotional."

"I'll regret saying it."

Standing several paces ahead, Knowledge quietly listened without turning around.

A gentle smile crossed his face.

"'Tis oft the uncertain soul that seeketh truth."

He slowly glanced over his shoulder.

"The fool proclaimeth certainty."

"The wise continueth asking."

Kaito lowered his head respectfully.

Knowledge faced forward once more.

"Thee need not possess every answer this day."

"Only the resolve to discover them."

The distance between the two armies continued shrinking.

Eight hundred meters.

Seven hundred.

Six.

Five.

The tension became almost unbearable.

Across the battlefield, Fire walked steadily at the head of his alliance.

His crimson cloak billowed behind him like a blazing banner.

He never looked away from Kaito.

Not once.

Beside him, Water calmly observed the opposing formation.

"Their discipline improved."

Fire nodded.

"Knowledge."

"Their confidence returned."

"Daniel."

Water's eyes narrowed slightly.

"And Kaito."

Fire smiled.

"He finally stopped trying to prove himself."

Water answered quietly.

"Which makes him dangerous."

Fire's grin widened.

"Good."

He cracked his knuckles.

"I'd have been disappointed otherwise."

Behind them, the allied gods marched in complete formation.

Earth carried an enormous stone warhammer across one shoulder.

The Wind Goddess floated effortlessly above the ranks, her long silver hair flowing behind her like drifting clouds.

The Forest Goddess whispered silent prayers beneath her breath while countless emerald vines slithered beneath the battlefield, waiting for her command.

Lightning twirled a spear of crackling energy between his fingers.

Metal calmly inspected the edge of his blade.

Crystal walked without making a sound.

Each god had chosen a side.

None intended to retreat.

The distance narrowed further.

Four hundred meters.

Three.

The first rows of soldiers could now distinguish one another's faces.

Many recognized old companions.

Former comrades.

Training partners.

Friends.

One young celestial soldier quietly lowered his spear.

The warrior standing opposite him...

Had once celebrated festivals beside him.

Another soldier tightened his jaw upon recognizing his former captain among the enemy ranks.

No hatred existed between them.

Only necessity.

Knowledge noticed every expression.

He slowly closed his eyes.

"'Tis a grievous day..."

He whispered softly enough that only Kaito and Daniel heard.

"...when duty commandeth the blade to seek familiar flesh."

Daniel lowered his gaze.

Kaito said nothing.

The armies continued forward.

Two hundred meters.

One hundred.

The air itself seemed unable to flow between them.

The pressure of thousands of divine souls gathered in one place distorted the surrounding light.

Small cracks appeared across the ancient white stone beneath countless footsteps.

Above, the heavens grew strangely still.

The drifting clouds ceased moving.

The warm sunlight dimmed ever so slightly.

Even the rivers of celestial energy beneath the battlefield slowed their luminous currents.

Water's calm eyes lifted toward the sky.

"...Something changed."

Fire frowned.

"I feel it too."

Knowledge opened his eyes.

For the first time since arriving...

The old god's peaceful smile disappeared.

His bronze monocle began spinning faster than ever before.

Click.

Click.

Click.

The tiny mechanical gears accelerated until they became nothing more than circles of bronze light.

Knowledge quietly exhaled.

"...At last."

Kaito immediately noticed the change.

"Master?"

Knowledge did not answer.

His gaze remained fixed upon the endless horizon beyond both armies.

Daniel instinctively rested his hand upon one of his revolvers.

"...Who's there?"

No reply came.

Yet every god on the battlefield felt it.

An indescribable sensation spread through Heaven.

Not killing intent.

Not hostility.

Something far greater.

Authority.

Ancient.

Absolute.

It descended from beyond the clouds like an invisible ocean.

One by one, conversations ceased.

Weapons felt heavier.

Breathing became strangely difficult.

The floating islands surrounding the Plains of Eternity trembled ever so slightly.

The banners that moments earlier danced proudly in the wind now hung perfectly still.

There was no wind anymore.

There was only silence.

Fire instinctively stopped walking.

Water halted beside him.

Earth's massive footsteps came to an abrupt end.

The Wind Goddess found herself unable to summon even the gentlest breeze.

On the opposite side, Kaito unconsciously tightened his grip upon his spear.

Daniel slowly lowered his revolver.

Neither understood why.

Neither dared move.

Every soldier.

Every god.

Every living being across the battlefield instinctively looked toward the distant horizon.

No one spoke.

Then...

A single voice echoed across the heavens.

It was not loud.

It did not need to be.

Reality itself carried its command.

"HALT."

The word rippled through Heaven.

Every step stopped.

Every weapon froze.

Every heartbeat seemed to hesitate.

No warrior advanced.

No god moved.

Only an immeasurable pressure remained...

And beneath its overwhelming weight...

Heaven held its breath.
