Chapter 16 - Chapter 16: The Waiting Game

Chapter 16: The Waiting Game

The fourth-floor service corridor smelled of dust and old iron. The emergency lights cast everything in a sickly red glow, turning shadows into blood. Adrian and Luca crouched behind a cleaning cart, breathing shallow, listening.

Two guards stood outside the council chamber door—black tactical gear, rifles slung low, earpieces blinking. They spoke in low German.

"…extra sweep in B3. Someone tripped a sensor."

"Probably maintenance. They're idiots."

A laugh. Short. Cold.

Adrian's fingers tightened on the knife handle. The red tint in his vision pulsed once—then steadied.

Luca touched his arm. "We wait. They'll rotate in ten minutes. We follow the one going down."

Adrian nodded.

They waited.

The guards shifted weight. One yawned. The other checked his watch.

Time crawled.

Adrian's mind wandered back to the apartment. The blood. The screams. The last look in his father's eyes.

Then the voice came again—soft, almost tender.

"Adrian… you don't have to do this."

He clenched his jaw.

The voice persisted.

"You can still walk away. You're not them. Not yet."

Luca noticed the tension in Adrian's shoulders.

"You okay?" he whispered.

Adrian shook his head—just once.

The voice was louder now. Clearer. It wasn't just memory. It was inside him.

"Stop… before it's too late."

Adrian pressed his palm to his temple. The red glow flared.

[ANOMALY DETECTED]

[Residual fragment integration: 28%]

[Override risk: 82%]

[Warning: Emotional interference critical. Continued suppression may cause system instability.]

Luca leaned closer. "Talk to me."

Adrian's voice was rough. "She's telling me to stop. To run. To… not become them."

Luca's face hardened. "That's not her. That's the code your parents stole. It's weaponizing your guilt."

Adrian looked at him. "What if it's not? What if it's really her? What if she's trying to save me?"

Luca's jaw tightened. "Then she's too late."

The guards moved.

One turned. "I'll check the stairs."

The other nodded.

The first guard walked away—toward the service stairs.

Luca signaled.

They followed—silent, shadows among shadows.

The guard descended one flight. Stopped at a landing. Lit a cigarette.

Adrian moved first.

Knife out. Silent step.

The guard never heard him.

One hand over the mouth. Knife across the throat.

Blood sprayed. Body sagged.

[TARGET ELIMINATED]

[Execution: Stealth Kill]

[Progress to Level 3: +18%]

[Override risk: 85%]

The red tint surged.

Vision tilted.

Adrian saw the guard's face—then his father's. Then his own.

The voice screamed:

"STOP!"

Adrian staggered.

Luca caught him.

"Adrian—"

The body hit the floor with a wet thud.

Alarms didn't trigger.

But the voice did.

Louder. Desperate.

"You're killing everything I loved in you."

Adrian dropped to one knee.

Luca knelt beside him. "Talk to me."

Adrian's breathing was ragged. "She's… angry. She's saying I'm killing her. Over and over."

Luca's hand tightened on Adrian's shoulder.

"That's not her. That's the system breaking you down. It wants you to hesitate. To fail."

Adrian looked at the body.

Blood pooled on the concrete.

He felt nothing.

No guilt.

No satisfaction.

Just… emptiness.

The system pinged:

[Override risk: 88%]

[Emotional suppression active]

[Recommendation: Eliminate remaining marked targets to stabilize]

Adrian stood.

The red glow dimmed slightly.

He wiped the knife on the guard's jacket.

"Let's keep moving."

Luca watched him for a long moment.

Then nodded.

They descended to B1.

Power room.

Luca opened the breaker panel.

Flipped switches.

Lights dimmed further.

Alarms stuttered—then silenced.

They had minutes.

They moved to the loading dock exit.

Door unlocked.

They slipped out.

Night air hit them—cold, sharp.

They ran.

Through trees. Down the hillside. Along the lake path.

No drones followed.

No guards.

They reached the hotel.

Room door shut. Locked.

Luca leaned against it. Breathing hard.

Adrian stood in the middle of the room.

He looked at the knife.

Clean now.

He set it on the table.

The red glow was gone.

But the voice lingered—faint, broken.

"Adrian…"

He closed his eyes.

Luca watched him.

"We got inside again," Luca said quietly. "We know the layout. We know they're waiting for you."

Adrian opened his eyes.

"Ninety days," he said. "Until override."

Luca nodded. "Then we make every day count."

Adrian stared at the knife.

The system pulsed once—soft, almost gentle.

[Override risk: 82% – Temporary stabilization]

[Progress to Level 3: 90%]

[New Intel: Council arrival in 4 hours. Full lockdown commencing.]

Adrian looked at Luca.

"Four hours," he said. "They arrive in four hours."

Luca's face hardened.

"Then we go back one last time."

Adrian picked up the knife.

This time he didn't wipe it.

He sheathed it.

And nodded.

The countdown had begun.
