Chapter 77 - CHAPTER 77: THE TRUTH — Part 2

[Kara's Apartment — September 2017, 9:45 AM]

The apartment was too quiet.

Mon-El sat on the couch, hands clasped in his lap, as Kara paced the length of the room. Back and forth, back and forth, her cape swishing with each turn. She hadn't spoken in several minutes.

"Tell me about the show," she said finally, stopping mid-stride. "What did it... show? About me?"

"It's called Supergirl." Mon-El kept his voice steady, factual. "It follows your life on Earth. Your arrival, living with the Danvers, working at CatCo, becoming a hero. The people you meet. The enemies you fight. Your relationships."

"Relationships." Something flickered in her expression. "You knew about James. And Winn's feelings. And..."

"Yes." He nodded. "I knew about the people who would matter to you. I knew how some relationships would develop." A pause. "I knew about us, too. In the show—in the original version—Mon-El arrives from Daxam. He and Kara... they fall for each other. Eventually."

"So you knew." Her voice was controlled, but her hands had curled into fists at her sides. "When we met. When I started training you. When we had our first kiss. You knew it was going to happen."

"I knew it might happen. The timeline isn't exact—things change when you're actually living them instead of watching." He leaned forward, needing her to understand. "But yes. I knew there was a story where we ended up together. I just... I didn't know if living in that story would feel the same."

"Does it?"

The question hung between them.

"It feels more," he said honestly. "The show—it was entertainment. A story I followed, cared about, but ultimately watched from outside. Being here, being with you—that's not a story. It's a life. My life. And falling in love with you wasn't following a script. It was... terrifying. And wonderful. And completely, utterly real."

Kara's expression wavered, but she didn't respond. Instead: "What else did you know?"

"A lot." He began laying out the pieces—carefully, honestly. "I knew Mxyzptlk would come for you, and I tried to help you see through his manipulation. I knew the Daxamites would arrive, though the details were different. I knew my parents were..." He stumbled over the words. "I knew what they were capable of. The show made them clear villains. Living it was... messier."

"And my parents?"

"Alura and Zor-El. The hologram, the things she could tell you. I knew some of it. Not everything—the show focused on certain moments."

"The prison. Fort Rozz."

"Yes."

Kara exhaled sharply. "You knew about Astra."

The name struck like a blow. Mon-El had hoped to avoid this particular truth, but there was no more avoidance. No more evasion.

"Yes."

"And you never warned me. Never prepared me for—"

"I tried." The words came out desperate. "I didn't know exactly when things would happen, or if they would happen the same way. And some things—" He stopped, struggling. "Some things I couldn't change without revealing what I knew. Without becoming someone who manipulates events instead of lives in them."

"That's convenient."

"It's the truth." He stood, moving toward her but stopping short of reaching out. "Every time I used what I knew—every time I tried to steer events—I was playing god with people's lives. Your life. I hated it. I hated knowing things and not being able to say anything. I hated every moment of pretending to learn what I already understood."

"Then why didn't you tell me?" Her voice broke on the question. "If it was so terrible, why keep it secret for so long?"

"Because I was afraid." The admission came out raw, stripped of any defense. "Afraid you'd think I wasn't real. That my feelings were just... following a script. That everything between us was a lie." He met her eyes, letting her see the terror he'd carried for months. "I love you, Kara. And I was terrified that if you knew the truth, you'd stop loving me."

The tears came then—hers first, then his. They stood in the middle of the room, not touching, weeping.

"Are you even him?" Kara asked finally, her voice barely a whisper. "The person I fell in love with? Is that person real?"

The question cut deeper than any blade.

"I don't know." Mon-El's voice cracked. "The original Mon-El—the prince who got into that pod—I don't know what happened to him. Whether he died, whether we merged, whether I replaced him entirely. I don't have answers."

"Then who are you?"

"I'm the person who woke up in your world and chose to be better than what I found. I'm the person who trained with you, fought beside you, loved you." He stepped closer, close enough to touch if she'd let him. "I'm the person who held your hand during the invasion. Who chose Earth over his own people. Who would give everything to protect you."

He extended his hand, palm up, offering.

"The consciousness might be different. The memories might be borrowed. But the choices—the love—that was me. Is me. The only me I know how to be."

Kara stared at his hand for a long moment. Then she turned away.

"I need time," she said. "To think. To process. This is..."

"Impossible?"

"Everything." She walked toward the door, stopped with her hand on the frame. "I don't know what I believe right now. I don't know what's real and what's..." She trailed off, shaking her head.

"However long you need," Mon-El said, his heart shattering. "I'll wait."

She nodded once, still not looking at him, and then she was gone.

The apartment fell silent. Mon-El stood in the center of the room, alone, surrounded by the debris of the only truth that mattered.

He'd done the right thing. Telling her. He had to believe that.

The alternative was unbearable.
