Chapter 85: Rainbow Skies
Seeing this, Evelyn quickly crouched down and began to explain to the children with gentleness and patience.
She gently stroked their hair, speaking in a loving tone about the reason for Johnny's arrival and his kind, friendly nature.
After a period of comfort and explanation, the two children finally gradually let go of their inner fear and wariness.
Immediately after, Evelyn turned and walked to the stove, skillfully lighting the fire and preparing to brew some fragrant coffee to entertain the guest.
Johnny sat quietly in this slightly simple yet incredibly warm little cabin, looking around and feeling everything around him with his heart.
At this moment, he seemed to suddenly understand why Arthur was hailed as the "Friend of Widows."
It turned out that the sense of satisfaction and accomplishment brought by lending a helping hand in others' moments of difficulty was so wonderful, unforgettable, and left such a long-lasting aftertaste.
Before long, after Johnny had filled his stomach, he prepared to set out once again.
Before leaving, he suggested that Evelyn sell the house, saying he could provide a place for their family to live.
The other party nodded in agreement with great solemnity, and amidst repeated thanks, Johnny officially set foot on the road to Rainbow Skies.
In reality, Johnny had completely deceived her!
Not only was it not on his way at all, but he even had to go in the opposite direction of Rainbow Skies to "drop her home on the way."
And the house he promised her was nothing more than a pie in the sky.
One must know that even he himself had no fixed residence; where would he get a house to give her?
However, from a certain perspective, this lie became a disguised driving force, forcing him to think about and take the next step in his plan—moving.
When he played the game before, he felt that Rainbow Skies was actually more suitable as a camp for the Van der Linde Gang compared to Horseshoe Overlook.
Although Rainbow Skies had a total of four entrances and exits, which at first glance seemed like it was leaking from all sides with no security to speak of, a careful analysis would reveal its advantages.
First, the main road had two entrances, but they were right next to each other.
This meant they only needed to arrange for people to patrol in this one direction.
Secondly, there was another entrance and two exits at the rear, but they only needed to use pickaxes and other tools with the Gang members to transform part of the mountain into a steep slope.
In this way, these two paths at the back would be transformed into one-way escape routes.
After such clever planning and modification, Rainbow Skies would undoubtedly become an excellent choice for a camp.
The key problem now facing Johnny was how to find a way to successfully take over this piece of land.
And how to convince Dutch to agree to settle here.
After all, getting Dutch to give up the nomadic life was a problem... Evelyn lived north of Valentine, while Rainbow Skies was located to the west of Horseshoe Overlook.
After a long journey, Johnny finally arrived at Rainbow Skies as dawn broke the next day.
Upon reaching his destination, Johnny did not take action immediately, but first observed quietly from where he was for a while.
He wanted to determine if Robel was home in order to formulate his next plan.
Time passed minute by minute, and before long, he saw a ranch worker riding a tall, sturdy morgan horse, galloping hurriedly from the direction of the house.
As he approached the Stable, he skillfully dismounted and carefully stabled his mount inside.
Then, he unhurriedly took various tools from the Stable, preparing to welcome a new day of laboring like an ox or horse.
Just then, wisps of cooking smoke rose from inside the room, which undoubtedly indicated that Robel was likely inside.
Seeing this, Johnny quickly mounted his horse, squeezed its belly with his legs, and the steed galloped out like an arrow from a bow, arriving in front of the house in an instant.
The worker nearby noticed this uninvited guest's aggressive arrival; though somewhat fearful, he knew that it was better to avoid trouble, so he chose to remain silent and continued to bury his head, pretending he hadn't seen anything, and went about feeding the cattle.
Just then, a loud bang was heard as Johnny kicked the old wooden door with a flying foot. With a muffled thud, the wooden door swung open.
Johnny burst into the room aggressively and shouted loudly, "Mr. Robel! It's time to pay back the money you owe Mr. Strauss!"
The man in the room was clearly startled by this sudden intruder. He looked at Johnny in terror and scrambled to hide behind a table.
He asked stutteringly in Polish, "May... may I ask, what... what business do you have at my house?"
Hearing that the other party surprisingly wasn't speaking English, Johnny couldn't help but curse under his breath:
"Damn it!" He then remembered that this guy's English was absolutely terrible, and communicating with him was harder than climbing to heaven.
Thinking of this, Johnny's face turned pale with anger. He furiously drew a shiny lemat revolver from the holster at his waist, pointing the dark muzzle straight at Robel hiding behind the table, and roared:
"Can you speak English or not?"
Perhaps frightened by the gun in Johnny's hand, Robel nodded tremblingly and answered in broken English:
"O... okay, I kno... know you are here for the money."
However, unexpectedly, this cunning fellow then blurted out a sentence in German:
"Can we speak in the Language of the Empire?"
Johnny was now completely enraged, thinking to himself:
This guy clearly knows how to speak English but is deliberately going in circles and playing tricks. How hateful!
Infuriated, Johnny lunged forward like a fierce beast, reaching out with a thick, powerful hand.
He grabbed Robel tightly by the collar and then effortlessly lifted him up, suspending him in mid-air.
Then, with a swing of his arm, as if throwing a weightless object, he hurled Robel away.
Poor Robel drew an arc in the air before crashing heavily onto the cold, hard ground nearby.
Johnny glared fiercely at Robel, who was groaning on the ground, and barked again:
"Now, can you finally speak English properly?"
