The morning sun was already beginning to climb over the high, white stone walls of the Town of the First Hero, casting long, pale shadows across the cobblestone streets outside. Inside our room at the inn, the air was still and quiet, filled with the soft, rhythmic sound of breathing. I woke up while Elphyete is still asleep, her silver hair fanned out across the white pillowcase like a spill of moonlight. The room was cool, but the warmth radiating from her side of the bed was grounding and comfortable.
I stayed still for a moment, just watching the way the dust motes danced in the thin beams of light that managed to peek through the heavy curtains. My mind was relatively calm, though my heart still gave a small, familiar flutter whenever I looked at her. Eventually, the realization that the day was beginning started to set in. I took a deep, quiet breath and tried to stand up, carefully attempting to peel the heavy blankets away and slide out of the bed without disturbing her rest.
I had only moved a few inches when I felt a sudden, firm pressure around my waist. Even in her sleep, Elphyete's reflexes were sharp. She hugged me tightly, her arms locking around me to keep me from leaving the warmth of the mattress. She was still half-asleep, her eyes tightly closed and her features soft, but she clearly had no intention of letting me go. As she pulled me back toward her, I heard her mumbling in a low, dreamy voice, "I wanna hug you..."
The sheer, unfiltered honesty of her sleep-talk made a smile tug at the corners of my mouth. It was such a contrast to her usual composed and dominant demeanor that I just chuckled softly to myself. There was no point in fighting it; the bed was warm, the room was peaceful, and she was making her wishes very clear. I gave up on my plan to get an early start, and I layed down and hugged her back, pulling her close and resting my head near hers.
We stayed like that for several minutes, the only sound in the room being the distant chirping of birds outside and the faint crackle of the inn's structure settling. Elphyete began to stir, her grip tightening for a second before she slowly woke up. Her eyes fluttered open, and the moment she realized I was lying there holding her, a playful, knowing smirk spread across her face. She looked up at me with a spark of mischief in her eyes and said, "Getting a bit confident I see..."
The remark caught me off guard, my face heating up instantly. Before I could say anything or offer a defensive explanation about how she was the one who pulled me back down, she moved with surprising speed. She leaned up and she kissed me, her lips warm and soft against mine.
The intensity of her affection always managed to short-circuit my brain. I felt that familiar wave of embarrassment wash over me, and my instinct was to retreat slightly to regain my composure. I tried to pull out of the kiss, shifting my head back just an inch, but Elphyete wasn't finished. She moved her hands with a firm, guiding touch. She held my hands, lifting them from the bed, and she placed them on her back, making sure I was fully embracing her. My resistance melted away under the pressure of her gaze, and I hugged her properly, our bodies pressed close together in the quiet morning light.
We were lost in the moment until a sharp, rhythmic sound echoed through the room. There was a knock on the door, loud enough to startle both of us. Elphyete finally pulled out of the kiss, her eyes darting toward the wooden door. In an instant, her playful, dominant expression vanished, replaced by a mask of feigned exhaustion. She quickly pulled the blankets up to her chin and pretended to be asleep, hiding her face against the pillow while I was left to handle the interruption.
I let out a long breath, trying to smooth down my hair and compose my features. I stood up, walked across the creaky floorboards, and when I opened the door, I saw Tokine standing there. She was holding her pocket watch in one hand, looking as punctual and focused as ever. She looked at me and said that it's time to eat, her voice echoing slightly in the hallway. Then, she looked past my shoulder, squinting into the dim light of the room. She noticed the silver-haired figure tucked under the covers and she said to wake up Elphyete too.
I nodded quickly, not wanting to give away the fact that Elphyete had been wide awake and kissing me just seconds prior. I said, "Ok," and I closed the door, turning back to the room.
Elphyete peeked one eye open from under the blankets, looking at me with a tiny, triumphant grin. I shook my head, though I couldn't help but smile back. I said to Elphyete that it's time to eat, and we both finally got out of bed to prepare for the day.
We headed downstairs to the common room of the inn, where the air was thick with the smell of freshly baked bread and hot tea. After we ate breakfast with the rest of the class—Lucian and Aria were surprisingly quiet for once, likely still recovering from the previous day's antics—we decided to take advantage of the beautiful weather in the Town of the First Hero.
The town was surrounded by rolling hills that were currently in full bloom. After preparing our small day bags, we left the inn and walked a short distance until we arrived at a near beautiful flower field. The area was a sea of vibrant colors—deep purples, bright yellows, and soft whites—all swaying gently in the morning breeze. The scent was overwhelming in the best way possible, sweet and fresh.
Elphyete found a particularly lush spot near the center of the field and she sat there, her white dress contrasting beautifully with the colorful petals. I sat too, settling into the soft grass beside her. We didn't feel the need to talk much. The peace of the field was enough. We sat and looked at the flowers for a few hours, watching the butterflies flit between the blooms and listening to the distant hum of the town. It was the most relaxed I had felt since the journey began.
The time slipped away unnoticed until the sun was high overhead. We eventually headed back toward the town center for a quick meal, and after eating lunch, we found ourselves drawn right back to the tranquility of the meadows. We went back to the flower field, but this time, the midday sun made the grass feel warm and inviting.
We layed down besides each other in the heart of the blooms. The sky above was a brilliant, cloudless blue, and the tall stalks of the flowers acted like a natural wall, hiding us from the rest of the world. We stayed there for a few hours, sometimes talking in low whispers, but mostly just enjoying the silence and the feeling of the sun on our skin. The shadows of the trees began to stretch long across the petals as the afternoon faded, and we remained there until night finally began to fall, turning the sky into a tapestry of deep indigo and gold.
The walk back to the inn was quiet, the cool evening air a sharp contrast to the warmth of the afternoon. We met up with the rest of the group, and we ate dinner in the common room, listening to the muffled sounds of the town settling in for the night. Once our plates were cleared, we headed back up to our separate room.
The day had been long and peaceful, and the exhaustion of doing nothing but enjoying each other's company finally started to set in. Elphyete just went to bed as soon as we entered, pulling the covers up and closing her eyes immediately. I assumed she was just tired from the hours spent in the sun, so I moved quietly, trying not to disturb her.
I blew out the flickering candle on the bedside table and layed in bed, expecting a quiet night of sleep. However, the moment my head hit the pillow, the "tired" Elphyete sprang into action. She instantly hugged me, her arms wrapping around me with surprising strength, and she kissed me deeply.
She pulled back just enough to see my shocked expression in the moonlight and she said, "Surprise!!!"
I couldn't help it; I chuckled at her playfulness. She had been faking her exhaustion just to catch me off guard again. I shook my head, marveling at how she always seemed to stay one step ahead of me. I hugged her back, feeling the steady beat of her heart against mine, and after a bit, the quiet of the room and the comfort of the embrace finally took over, and we fell asleep.
