Cherreads

Chapter 158 - Chapter 158:

The last of the crackers were finally gone, leaving only crumbs and empty wrappers scattered across the low wooden table. We all sat there in silence for a few minutes, just breathing and feeling the weight of the meal settle in our stomachs. The warm, golden light from the ceiling stones made the laboratory feel much softer and more welcoming than it had when we first arrived. Euphyne was leaning back against the plush cushions of the couch, his eyes half-closed and a look of deep satisfaction on his face. Zhandra was quietly stacking the empty tea cups, her movements slow and relaxed. Even Ishighi, who usually looked like he was ready for a fight at any moment, was leaning his head back against the wall, looking surprisingly peaceful. The chaotic energy of the morning had faded into a comfortable tiredness that seemed to wrap around all of us.

Hanashighi was the only one who didn't look tired. She was sitting on her stool, her eyes still bright behind her thick glasses as she watched us. She seemed to be enjoying the fact that she had fed us so well. She waited until the last bit of tea was finished before she stood up, her boots clicking loudly on the wooden floor. She looked at the wall on the far side of the room, the one opposite the library she had shown us earlier. She had a knowing grin on her face, like she was about to reveal yet another secret of her hidden home.

Hanashighi suddenly smacked another wall and it opened. This time, the stone didn't slide or fold. It seemed to vanish into the floor with a heavy, mechanical hum, revealing a long hall with a bunch of doors appeared. The hallway was narrow but very clean, with smooth, white walls and more of those glowing stones set into the floor to light the way. It looked like a hidden wing of the house that had been built specifically for guests. There were at least six doors on each side of the hall, all made of dark, heavy wood with simple iron handles. It looked very organized and quiet, a complete contrast to the messy, book-filled lab we were standing in.

Hanashighi pointed down the long hallway, her voice carrying that same energetic tone. "We can sleep here because tomorrow we'll leave and go to the underground city to find the king," she said. Her words were a reminder that our break was only temporary. The mission was still waiting for us, and the next part of it was going to be much harder than a food tour. "Pick a room and get some rest. Each one has a bed and some fresh water. Don't worry about the noise; the walls are thick enough to block out even my most loud experiments. You're going to need your strength for tomorrow. The underground city isn't a place where you want to be tired or distracted."

We all stood up, our movements a bit sluggish from the big meal. Tokine and Alea were already leaning against each other, their eyes drooping as they started to walk toward the hallway. Ishighi gave us a short, silent nod before he walked down the hall, choosing a door near the very end. Celdrich followed him, still clutching the book Hanashighi had given him, probably planning to read a few more pages before he finally went to sleep. One by one, the rest of the group picked their rooms and disappeared behind the heavy wooden doors. The sounds of clicking locks and shifting blankets echoed softly in the hallway before the silence returned.

Elphyete and I were the last ones left in the lab. She was still holding onto my arm, her fingers curled around my sleeve as if she was afraid I might disappear again if she let go. I led her toward the hallway, and we chose a room in the middle, away from the others. I pushed the door open and stepped inside, feeling the cool, still air of the bedroom. The room was simple but very comfortable. There was a large bed with a thick, green blanket, a small wooden nightstand with a lamp, and a window that was shuttered tight to keep out any light from the lab.

I walked over to the bed and sat down, feeling the soft mattress sink beneath me. The long day of walking through the town had finally caught up to me, and my legs felt like lead. Elphyete didn't sit down right away. She stayed by the door for a moment, her silver hair caught in the soft orange light of the lamp I had just turned on. She closed the door behind her, the sound of the latch clicking shut feeling very loud in the quiet room. She looked at me, and her expression was different than it had been all day. The playful pout she had been wearing since the inn was gone, replaced by something much more intense and focused.

She walked toward the bed, her steps slow and deliberate. As she got closer, I noticed that her long, pointed ears were moving. They were twitching and turning in small, quick motions, as if they were reacting to every sound in the room. I watched as the tips of her ears began to turn a soft, bright shade of pink. The color was spreading quickly, moving down from the points toward the base of her ears. She stopped right in front of me, her shadow falling across my lap. She reached out and put her hands on my shoulders, her fingers pressing into my skin.

"You really made me wait a long time today, Sogha," she whispered, her voice low and a bit shaky. She leaned in closer, and her ears twitched again, the pink color becoming even deeper and more vibrant. She looked into my eyes, her own eyes wide and shimmering in the lamplight. "Leaving me alone in that inn while you were out exploring with that researcher... I was very lonely. And I was very worried that you were having too much fun without me."

She sat down on the edge of the bed next to me, her body pressing against mine. I could feel the heat radiating from her. Her ears were moving constantly now, fluttering and turning pink as she spoke. She reached up and brushed a stray hair away from my forehead, her hand lingering on my cheek. Her skin was warm, and her touch was very gentle. She moved her hand down to my neck, her thumb tracing the line of my jaw.

"I think you need to make it up to me," she continued, a small, playful smile tugging at the corners of her mouth. Her ears were a bright, vivid pink now, standing out sharply against her silver hair. They were turning and twisting with a life of their own, reacting to her every emotion. She leaned in even closer, her face just inches from mine. "I don't care about the food anymore. And I don't care about the lab. I just want you to stay right here and not go anywhere else."

She leaned forward and kissed me. It was a long, warm kiss that felt like it lasted for hours. Her hands moved from my neck to the back of my head, her fingers tangling in my hair as she pulled me closer. Her ears were moving frantically now, the pink color so bright it almost looked like they were glowing in the dim light of the room. She was breathing heavily, her chest rising and falling against mine. For a moment, the entire world outside that room vanished. There was no king, no underground city, and no dangerous mission. There was only the warmth of the bed and the feeling of her lips against mine.

She pulled back just an inch, her eyes searching mine. Her ears were still twitching, the tips turning a deep, almost red shade of pink. She let out a small, soft laugh and leaned her forehead against mine. "You're not going to leave me again tomorrow, are you?" she asked, her voice a soft murmur.

"We're all going together," I said, my voice sounding a bit rough.

"Good," she whispered. She leaned in and kissed me again, her movements more urgent now. She pulled me down onto the bed, the thick green blanket feeling soft against my back. Her silver hair fell around us like a curtain, blocking out the rest of the room. Her ears were still moving, turning and twitching against her hair, their bright pink color a constant reminder of how she was feeling.

We stayed like that for a long time, lost in each other in the quiet safety of the hidden room. The sounds of the laboratory were far away, and the worries of the future didn't matter for now. All that mattered was the present moment. Eventually, the tiredness began to take over again, but it was a different kind of tiredness—a peaceful, happy sort that made it easy to drift off. Elphyete curled up against my side, her head resting on my chest. I could still see her ears moving slightly in her sleep, the pink color slowly fading back to their normal shade as she relaxed.

I closed my eyes, feeling the steady rhythm of her breathing. Tomorrow was going to be a long day. We were going to enter the underground business city, a place full of secrets and danger. We were going to find the king, and we were going to find the elixir that could save everyone. It was a huge task, but as I felt Elphyete's warmth beside me, I knew I was ready for it. I drifted off to sleep, the memory of the kiss and the twitching, pink ears of the elf girl being the last things on my mind before the darkness took over.
