Chapter 25 - Chapter 25 — The Slaughter of the Enclave

The system cage closed slowly.

White anchors burned into the earth like pillars of cold sunlight. The Failed Lands twisted beneath them as the roots resisted, but the lattice of order kept expanding.

Nothing inside the forest could escape it.

Inside the enclave, panic had already begun.

Lysa moved quickly between the tree shelters, gathering people.

"Everyone underground," she ordered.

Children were carried. Supplies were abandoned.

No one argued.

They had seen system purges before.

They knew what happened when the Archon arrived.

The elder stood at the center of the enclave, his hands resting against the ancient roots.

"They've mapped us," he said quietly.

Lysa's voice was tight.

"How long?"

The old man listened to the ground.

"Minutes."

The roots trembled again.

But this time—

Not from fear.

From something approaching.

---

Aron stepped into the clearing.

The entire enclave turned toward him.

No one spoke.

They had heard the rumors.

The devourer.

The hunger.

But they had also seen him spare lives.

Lysa walked toward him first.

"You felt it too."

He nodded.

"The system cage."

She glanced at the sky where pale light flickered between the branches.

"They're not here to negotiate."

"I know."

Silence stretched between them.

Then the elder spoke.

"You should leave."

Aron looked at him.

"If you stay here, they will kill you."

"They'll kill you anyway," Lysa said.

"Probably."

A faint smile touched his face.

But his eyes were cold.

"They came for me."

The system inside him flickered immediately.

> **[Correction protocol active.]**

Aron ignored it.

A sudden crack of light split the sky.

System anchors slammed into the ground around the enclave.

The forest screamed.

The air filled with white geometric patterns forming a massive containment field.

Then—

The hunters arrived.

Ten figures descended through the light.

System armor.

Precision blades.

Perfect synchronization.

They landed silently around the clearing.

One of them stepped forward.

"Host designation: Devourer."

His voice was mechanical.

"By authority of the System Concord, you are ordered to surrender."

Aron stared at him.

Behind the hunters, more light appeared.

Vaelor watching from a distant ridge through the system lens.

The hunter continued.

"Failure to comply will result in immediate termination."

The system inside Aron pulsed again.

> **[Primary authority confirmed.]**

> **[Host compliance recommended.]**

Aron sighed softly.

"Recommended."

The hunter raised his weapon.

"Final warning."

Aron looked behind him.

At the enclave.

At the people hiding beneath the trees.

At Lysa standing stubbornly beside him.

The ring warmed faintly.

Ayesha's will was silent.

But steady.

Aron turned back toward the hunters.

"No."

The system reacted instantly.

> **[Host refusal detected.]**

The hunters moved at the same time.

Perfect coordination.

Three blades flashed toward Aron's throat.

He moved faster.

The first hunter's blade shattered as Aron caught it with his bare hand.

The second hunter's chest collapsed under a single punch.

The third never finished his swing.

The hunger devoured him before the blade touched Aron.

Energy exploded through Aron's veins.

The system screamed warnings.

> **[Unauthorized consumption!]**

The clearing erupted into chaos.

Hunters attacked from every direction.

Aron moved like a storm.

Not elegant.

Not controlled.

Just overwhelming force.

A blade cut his arm.

The hunter who swung it vanished the next second as the hunger consumed him whole.

Another hunter tried to restrain Aron with a system chain.

The chain snapped instantly.

Two more hunters died before they understood what was happening.

The enclave watched in stunned silence.

Lysa whispered under her breath.

"He's not fighting."

The elder nodded slowly.

"He's feeding."

Aron's body glowed faintly with absorbed energy.

The system inside him tried desperately to stabilize the surge.

> **[Host energy exceeding containment limits.]**

The last hunter charged with a system spear.

Aron caught the weapon easily.

For a moment they stood face to face.

The hunter's voice trembled.

"You're a monster."

Aron looked at him quietly.

"Probably."

Then the hunger devoured him.

The clearing fell silent.

Ten hunters.

Gone.

The system cage flickered violently.

Far away, Vaelor watched the entire event without emotion.

One of his attendants spoke carefully.

"Archon… the hunters were elite units."

Vaelor nodded.

"Yes."

"Should we deploy more?"

He studied the readings calmly.

The devourer's energy was rising exactly as predicted.

"Not yet."

His eyes focused on the red anomaly signal.

"It hasn't broken."

That was the real test.

Would the host surrender to the hunger?

Or keep resisting?

Back in the ruined clearing, Aron stood alone among broken system fragments.

The hunger pulsed violently inside him.

Stronger than ever.

The system struggled to keep up.

> **[Containment failing.]**

Aron looked toward the distant ridge.

He could feel the one controlling the cage.

Watching.

Waiting.

His voice carried quietly across the forest.

"If you wanted to test me…"

The wind moved through the trees.

"…send something stronger."

Far away, Vaelor smiled slightly.

"Very well."
