Chapter 6 - The Reunion

Chapter 6:

"Welcome to the high school reunion, Kaia."

Kaia's world tilted on its axis. She stared into the eyes of her former tormentors, the air in the restaurant suddenly as thin and cold as the mountain peaks. Each face was a fresh wound, a sharp memory of a girl who had been broken down piece by piece. Her eyes panned around the table, finally landing on the most calculated of them all. Chase held out a chair for her, his movements fluid and mocking as he ushered her to sit.

Her insides felt like molten silver, heavy and searing as the contents of her stomach threatened to rise. So this was the translation of her dream. Her mind spun, trying to catch up with the reality of the trap.

Their collective stares bore into her, a suffocating blend of snobbish politeness and predatory scrutiny. She could read the expectation in the set of their jaws. They wanted the meek Kaia. They wanted the girl who flinched at loud noises and the poor kid who lacked the spine to strike back.

She refused to give them that satisfaction. They needed to learn that the girl they remembered had been buried long ago. She would not break.

Blinking back the static of her thoughts, Kaia pasted on a smile that remained frozen well above her eyes. She walked toward the chair Chase held and sank into it with a confident flourish, intentionally denying him even a flicker of a glance.

"No one told me the spoiled brats of high school would be meeting today," she said, her voice steady as she looked directly into each of their faces.

Kyran Marlon sat to her left, the heir to a massive sports merchandise empire and the former co-captain of the school team. He had been Chase's primary weapon, a bully who enjoyed the physical side of their cruelty.

Next was Penelope Carrera, or Penni with an "i," as she used to insist. The only child and ultimate daddy's girl of a luxury car dynasty, she had moved through the halls with the untouchable grace of someone who had never been told no.

Then there was Emmanuel Byers, known then as Lin. While Chase had been the golden boy, Lin was the rot underneath. He was destructive and despondent, the heir to a pharmaceutical chain only rivaled by Nash Pharmaceuticals, and a healthcare network that now sat at the pinnacle of the American medical sector.

And, finally, Chase.

As much as she loathed the admission, she remembered every detail of them. You never truly forget the faces of your trauma.

The table fell into a sharp silence. They exchanged glances, the mild shock of her remark rippling through the group like a stone dropped in a still pond.

Kaia smirked.

"Chase, don't just sit there. Introduce us," she said. "I do vaguely remember you all walking around the school like you owned the place, but you don't expect me to remember your names, do you?"

Chase's brows furrowed, a flicker of genuine confusion crossing his face at her feigned ignorance. He pinned her with that cold, alpine stare. He knew she remembered. They all knew. But his curiosity seemed to outweigh his need for control as he watched her play her hand.

"Of course," Chase said, his voice a low rumble. "Kaia, meet Kyran, Penni, and Lin. Our classmates... from school?"

He posed the last part as a question, a silent dare for her to drop the act and concede.

The silence grew heavy as they waited for her response. Kaia ignored the pressure. She picked up the glass of water in front of her, taking a slow, measured sip while maintaining eye contact with each of them in turn.

"And I'm sure you all remember our dear friend, Kaia Manetti," Chase continued, shifting his focus to the others.

Tension coiled around the group. She watched them shift uncomfortably, her quiet observation acting as a mirror they didn't want to look into.

Penni cleared her throat, a smug expression settling over her features like a mask. "Of course we remember sweet little Kaia. We're not so uncultured that we would act like we don't, right guys?" She tilted her head, her tone dripping with quiet mockery. "But I guess not everyone here understands the rules of polite society. Frankly, I'm not surprised."

A manic twinkle danced in Penni's eyes as she leaned back.

"Now now, Penni, let's be nice," Kyran interjected. "It's been years since we've all met like this. It's hardly proper to be so openly brash. Uncultured even, as you've said."

Kyran narrowed his eyes at Kaia, his gaze traveling over her outfit. "You've changed, Kaia. Something about you feels... different. Ah, I have it. It's the dress. You finally look the part. You used to always look so poor." He spat the last word as if it were a physical impurity.

"I guess your mother marrying into the Ceemer family did do something for you," he continued, a dry chuckle escaping him. "You always did want to move around with the likes of us."

Penni giggled, her hand fluttering to her mouth in a display of mock shock. Lin remained silent, a permanent scowl etched into his face as he maintained a posture of cold indifference.

Chase looked amused at first glance, but Kaia noticed his right hand was a tightly clenched fist hidden beneath the table, pressed hard against his thigh. It was a curious detail that didn't match his casual expression.

They had always operated this way. Underhanded jabs that served as a prelude to the physical violence that usually followed. In the past, Kaia had taken it all. She had been the girl with her head down and her mouth shut, as quiet as a lamp in a dark room.

But that girl was a ghost.

Leaning back into the plush leather of her chair, Kaia folded her arms and let out a laugh. The sound was sharp, laced with a heavy dose of condescension that echoed through the high ceilings of the restaurant.

Lin looked startled, his indifference momentarily shattered. Chase watched her with an intensity that suggested he was trying to dissect her thoughts. Kyran and Penni both frowned, the expression threatening to crack the smooth, Botox infused skin of their foreheads.

"You're right," Kaia said, her voice cutting through the tension. "How could I forget any of you?"

She leaned forward, her eyes hardening into points of flint.

"You all almost ruined my life."
