Chapter 16 - Queen Fiore

As they continued down the path, the sprawling foliage opened up into a secluded, romantic sanctuary buried deep within the gardens. A small, intricately carved wooden gazebo rested beside a mirror-like pond covered in blooming, pearlescent water lilies. The soothing sound of a miniature waterfall echoed through the glade.

Fiore glided toward a curved stone bench inside the gazebo, sitting down with elegant precision. She patted the space beside her.

Kaito swallowed his sudden nervousness and sat down, taking care not to sit too close, though his arm brushed lightly against the soft fabric of her sleeve. Up close, her perfume smelled like wild jasmine and fresh rain. It was dizzying.

"So," Fiore began, resting her hands on her lap. "Tell me more about your journey through the trials. I wish to hear your perspective."

For the next hour, Kaito recounted the grueling path he had walked. He spoke of the importance of his choices in Eldenroot, skimming over the details of restarting trial two. Kaito went into detail of the psychological torture of the Trial of Phantoms, and the desperate, bloody battle at Southwatch. He spoke of his own terror and the overwhelming strength he drew from the maidens who fought alongside him. Lastly, he mentioned his desire to get stronger physically and not wanting to soley rely on magic.

Fiore listened intently, her expression shifting from rapt attention to deep empathy, never interrupting him once. When he finally trailed off, looking down at his palms, she reached out and gently rested her fingertips over his wrist.

"You have done remarkably well, Kaito," she said softly, her eyes shining with quiet pride. "More than anyone could have ever asked of a stranger."

Kaito scratched his cheek awkwardly, feeling a flush creep up his neck. "Thank you... though if I'm being completely honest with you..." He looked out over the lily pond, his voice dropping. "...I still have no idea if I'm actually cut out to be a king. The thought of being responsible for thousands of lives, an entire realm... it terrifies me. I'm just a normal guy. I barely know what I'm doing half the time."

Fiore's fingers tightened slightly over his arm. "You will not be forced to walk that path alone, Kaito. I will be beside you to guide your hand every step of the way."

The absolute sincerity in her voice struck Kaito right in the chest. He turned his head to look at her, taking in her noble, gentle features.

"I really appreciate that," Kaito said softly. He took a breath, letting his thoughts flow freely. "If I ever actually make it to the end of these trials... I don't want to rule Valeria by myself."

Fiore blinked, her silver brows lifting. "What do you mean?"

"I mean, I'd want us to rule it together," Kaito said firmly, gesturing between them. "You've been leading these people with grace and wisdom for centuries. It would be completely insane and incredibly arrogant for me to show up and pretend I know better than you. I want to share the crown with you as equals. I'd need you."

The Queen stared at him, entirely taken aback. Her lips parted slightly in genuine shock. In all the ancient texts of summoned heroes, every chosen savior brought forth to wear the crown had eventually succumbed to the intoxicating lure of absolute authority.

"You... truly have no desire to hoard that power for yourself?" she asked quietly, her voice trembling with disbelief.

Kaito let out a short, sudden laugh. "Are you kidding? Having total control sounds like an absolute nightmare. That's way too much paperwork."

Fiore stared at him for a second longer, and then a sudden, melodic laugh burst from her lips. It wasn't her usual polished, regal chuckle—it was an unrestrained laugh of pure delight.

"You are truly wondeful," she breathed, looking at him as if seeing him clearly for the very first time.

After her laughter subsided, a sudden, heavy silence settled over the small gazebo. The quiet intimacy of the moment pressed in on them, and neither seemed quite sure what to say next.

Kaito felt his anxiety building under her steady gaze. Looking around frantically for a distraction, his eyes landed on a chubby woodland squirrel perched on a low-hanging branch just outside the gazebo, staring intently at him.

Kaito stared right back.

The squirrel puffed out its fluffy cheeks.

Kaito immediately puffed out his cheeks to match.

The squirrel tilted its head sharply to the left.

Kaito tilted his head sharply to the left.

Queen Fiore watched this completely absurd, silent standoff unfold, her mouth twitching. "...Kaito? What exactly are you doing?"

"I'm engaging in high-level political negotiations," Kaito whispered deadseriously, never breaking eye contact with the rodent.

"...With a garden squirrel?"

"I think I'm losing," Kaito added solemnly.

Right on cue, the squirrel chittered angrily, spun around, and darted up the tree trunk at lightning speed.

Kaito let out a dramatic, heartbroken sigh, slumping back against the stone bench. "Dammit. I knew I should've opened with an offer of acorns."

Fiore couldn't contain it. She collapsed into a fit of breathless, ringing laughter, holding her side as her royal composure completely vanished. Kaito smiled proudly, feeling a deep wave of satisfaction at making the Queen of Valeria laugh like a normal girl.

"Oh, my goodness," Fiore gasped softly, wiping a tiny tear of amusement from the corner of her eye. "You... you truly are not what I expected when we cast the Summoning Ritual to bring forth a savior."

Kaito's proud smile instantly withered. A sudden spike of worry hit his chest. "...Wait. Is that... a bad thing?"

Seeing his sudden insecurity, Fiore's smile softened instantly. "Oh! No!"

Without thinking, she reached across the small gap between them and gently grasped his hands in hers. Her skin was impossibly soft, warm, and delicate against his.

"No, not at all," she said earnestly, looking directly into his brown eyes. "I meant it as the highest compliment, Kaito. I expected a hardened, arrogant warrior. I never expected someone so... funny. So humble, so kind, and so deeply sincere." Her cheeks dusted with a faint, shy pink. "I am profoundly grateful to whatever fate brought you into my life."

Kaito felt his throat tighten, his face burning furiously as he squeezed her hands back. "Th-Thank you, Your Majesty. Honestly... I didn't expect the Queen of the Elves to be so down-to-earth and sweet, either. You treat everyone with so much love. I really admire that about you."

Fiore lowered her gaze shyly, her silver hair falling forward to hide her blushing face. "...Thank you, my King."

Eventually, they rose from the gazebo and resumed their leisurely stroll down the garden paths. Kaito kept his head turned up toward the towering, ancient trees lining the walkway.

Which meant he completely failed to notice the massive, thick tree root protruding several inches above the dirt.

"Man, the architecture here is just insane—"

TRIP!

"Whoa—gagh!"

Kaito's foot slammed hard against the root. The momentum sent him flying forward through the air in a remarkably ungraceful dive. His black, thick framed glasses launched off his face, clattering loudly against the gravel.

THUD!

"Kaito!" Fiore gasped, her eyes wide with terror as he hit the ground in a cloud of dust. She rushed to his side instantly, kneeling down. "Are you alright?! Are you injured?!"

Kaito pushed himself up onto his hands and knees, groaning softly as he rubbed the back of his head. "Ow... okay, yup. I am officially the most clumsy savior in history." He laughed awkwardly, squinting blindly at the blurred shapes around him. "Ah, crap... my glasses. Sorry…I can't see a single thing without them."

"Stay still! I will find them!" Fiore said frantically, dropping to her hands and knees beside him. She swept her delicate hands across the nearby grass until her fingers brushed against the frame. "Here! I have them!"

Kaito smiled blindly in her direction, letting out a sigh of relief. "Oh, thank goodness."

Fiore looked at the delicate glass lenses, then at Kaito's blurred, unfocused brown eyes. A pang of deep sympathy hit her chest. "You truly rely on these strange glass contraptions just to perceive the world?"

"Yeah," Kaito admitted sheepishly, sitting back on his heels. "My vision is completely terrible without them. Everything more than a foot away is just a blob."

Fiore looked thoughtful, her expression softening. "...May I try something? Elven healing magic can sometimes realign natural senses."

Kaito blinked. "Sure, go for it."

Fiore leaned in close, bringing her face inches from his. She raised a soft, luminous hand, placing her palm near his forehead. A gentle, soothing green aura flared around her fingers, radiating a pleasant, comforting warmth that washed over his eyes.

She held the spell for a few seconds before lowering her hand, looking at him with hopeful, eager eyes. "There! How is your sight now?"

Kaito blinked several times, trying to focus. The world remained an absolute, blurry smear of white and silver. He offered her a deeply apologetic, gentle smile. "Ah... still completely blurry, unfortunately. My eyes were just built broken, I think. But... thank you so much for trying, Your Majesty. That was really kind of you."

Fiore's shoulders slumped slightly, looking genuinely disappointed in herself. "I wish I could have freed you from such a burden."

"You already do plenty," Kaito said softly.

He carefully took his glasses from her outstretched hands and unfolded the arms, slipping them securely back over his ears. The world instantly snapped back into crisp, high-definition focus. He let out a long, happy exhale. "Ah, much better."

Fiore smiled softly and offered him her hand. Kaito accepted it, and she helped pull him up to his feet. As they set off again, the Queen naturally, seamlessly reached out and linked her arm through his, leaning her shoulder lightly against his arm to help keep his balance. Neither of them mentioned it, but Kaito's heart was pounding so hard he was certain she could feel it vibrating through his sleeve.

They walked arm-in-arm for barely ten paces when fate decided to strike again.

This time, Fiore's high heels got caught in the exact same protruding tree root.

"Oh! Ah—!"

Fiore gasped as her balance completely shattered. She stumbled forward, her grip on Kaito's arm pulling him down right along with her.

They hit the lush, soft grass together in a chaotic tangle of silk and limbs. Kaito landed flat on his back, the breath knocked out of him—and Queen Fiore landed squarely on top of his chest.

Her hands rested flat against his collarbones. Her long, silver hair fell around them like a shimmering curtain, sealing them off from the rest of the world.

And, in the absolute shock of the impact... her soft, painted lips pressed directly against his.

Both of them froze entirely solid.

The silence that followed was deafening. Kaito's eyes were wide behind his lenses, staring directly into Fiore's emerald gaze, which was blown wide with absolute, breathless terror. Her lips were unbelievably soft, warm, and tasting faintly of sweet nectar.

For three agonizing seconds, neither moved.

Then, the reality of what just happened crashed down on the Queen.

Fiore practically levitated backward, scrambling onto her knees as her entire face and neck flushed into a terrifyingly bright, tomato-red.

"I-I-I am so profoundly sorry!" she squeaked, her regal voice completely shattering into a frantic, high-pitched stammer. "I—I slipped! The root—I was entirely careless! Please forgive me, my King! I did not mean to violate your space in such a vulgar manner!"

Kaito sat up rapidly, his own face burning so hot he felt like he was standing in front of a furnace. "N-No! No, no, no! It's completely fine! I'm the one who should apologize! I'm the one who didn't warn you about the root!"

They sat there on the grass, two feet apart, hyperventilating and blushing furiously as they stared at each other.

And then... a tiny snort escaped Kaito's nose.

Fiore clapped a hand over her mouth, a muffled gasp escaping her.

A second later, both of them erupted into loud, uncontrollable laughter, collapsing back against the grass as the ridiculousness of the situation completely wiped away the embarrassment.

"We are... an absolute disaster," Kaito wheezed out, wiping a tear of laughter from his eye. "The Savior and the Queen, defeated by a single tree root."

Fiore covered her red face with both hands, her shoulders shaking with helpless giggles. "It certainly appears that way... oh dear, if the high council saw us right now..."

Gradually, their laughter faded into a soft, comfortable quiet.

Kaito sat up, looking over at the Queen. She was sitting on her side, her hair slightly disheveled, her cheeks still glowing with a gorgeous, rosy flush. She looked human. She looked vulnerable.

She looked so utterly, breathtakingly beautiful that Kaito's dirty, lingering desires suddenly merged with a surge of genuine, overwhelming affection.

Suddenly feeling an uncharacteristic burst of boldness, Kaito spoke softly. "You know..."

Fiore looked over at him, her breathing still a little short. "Yes?"

"I... actually really liked that kiss," Kaito admitted, his voice remarkably steady despite his pounding heart.

Fiore's breath caught sharply in her throat. Her eyes widened.

Before she could process his words, Kaito leaned forward. He reached out, his hand surprisingly gentle as his warm palm caressed the soft curve of her blushing cheek.

He leaned in and gently pressed his lips against hers once more.

Unlike the accidental collision, this kiss was intentional. It was soft, slow, and unhurried. Kaito drank in the intoxicating warmth of her breath, feeling the delicate tremor running through her entire body.

When he finally, slowly pulled back, he found Queen Fiore staring at him as if her soul had literally departed her mortal vessel.

Her mouth was slightly open, her eyes completely glassy, and her cheeks were so bright red they practically glowed in the shade. She looked entirely dazed, as if she were seconds away from fainting flat onto the grass.

A confident, satisfied smirk spread across Kaito's face—a look he had never worn in his entire life.

He smoothly pushed himself to his feet, dusting off his trousers, before extending a polite hand down to her. "Shall we continue, Your Majesty?"

Fiore stared at his offered hand for five long seconds before mechanically reaching up and taking it. Kaito pulled her up with easy strength. The Queen didn't say a single word. She stood there, completely speechless, her legs visibly wobbling like liquid jelly beneath her white gown.

Kaito didn't push it. He simply smiled warmly, turned, and began walking slowly back down the path, allowing her to catch her breath.

Fiore stumbled along beside him in a dazed, flustered trance, her fingers resting lightly on her cheek where his hand had been just moments before. Her mind was an absolute, chaotic storm of screaming thoughts.

He... he kissed me. He intentionally kissed me. And he liked it. The Savior... my King...

After a painfully awkward, silent five minutes of walking, they finally made it back to the central courtyard near the library. Fiore suddenly snapped out of her trance, clearing her throat frantically as she took a quick step back.

"I—I...!" She squeaked, her voice cracking slightly. She cleared her throat again, trying desperately to summon a shred of her royal dignity. "I... I must immediately return to my study! The... the morning reports! They require my urgent, undivided attention!"

Kaito smiled knowingly, reaching down to scoop up his book from the stone fountain bench. "Of course, Your Majesty. Thank you for the wonderful walk."

"Y-Yes! Thank you!" Fiore stammered.

She offered him a tiny, incredibly shy wave, her knees shaking so violently she looked like a newborn fawn trying to walk. She quickly turned on her heel and practically fled down the grand corridor toward the throne room.

Kaito stood by the fountain, holding the book under his arm, a lovestruck, ridiculously happy smile plastered across his face as he watched her retreating form.

Inside the grand hallway, Queen Fiore leaned her back against the heavy oak doors of her private study, sliding down a few inches as she pressed both hands against her burning cheeks. Her heart was beating so fast it felt like a trapped bird.

"My goodness..." she whispered to herself, her voice trembling as a helpless, starry-eyed smile spread across her lips. "I... I do not think I am going to get a single second of work done today..."
