Chapter 26 - A Royal Proposal

The day of the proposal finally arrived, and King Julian helped Cable plan a grand surprise for Sofia. The entire kingdom was invited to a masquerade ball in the palace gardens, under the ethereal light of a full moon.

Cable was nervous yet excited as he donned his mask and adjusted his attire – a tailored black suit with a pristine white rose boutonniere. Sofia, entirely unaware of the secret plan, looked stunning in a flowing red silk gown and a delicate golden mask, her hair styled with regal elegance.

As the guests arrived and the music swelled, King Julian stood on the balcony overlooking the gardens and cleared his throat to silence the crowd. "Ladies and gentlemen of the kingdom," he announced, "tonight we gather for magic and wonder. But one among us has a special moment to share."

Cable's heart raced as he descended the stairs, his eyes locking onto Sofia's curious gaze. He walked through the crowd, dropping to one knee in front of her, and pulled out a small velvet box.

The music stopped. The crowd gasped in unison.

"Sofia," Cable began, his voice trembling with emotion:

"From the moment I met you, I knew you were different – not just because of your beauty..."

He smiled softly, his eyes filled with devotion:

"...but because of the way you made me feel – seen, heard, and loved."

Sofia's eyes sparkled with tears as Cable continued:

"In your eyes, my heart finds a home. Will you be my princess, my partner, my forever love? Will you marry me?"

The box opened, revealing a dazzling diamond ring. The crowd erupted into cheers and applause as Sofia nodded vigorously, tears streaming down her face. She threw her arms around Cable, and amidst thunderous applause, he slid the ring onto her finger.

King Julian approached them first, embracing his son and future daughter-in-law:

"I've never seen Cable happier. Welcome to our family, Sofia – you've brought joy to our palace."

Queen Ava followed with a warm smile:

"I must say, I'm delighted to see my stepson so in love. Congratulations, dear Sofia – you'll be a lovely daughter-in-law."

Arya rushed over, emotional:

"Oh my goodness, Sofia – I'm beyond thrilled for you both! Cable loves you so much!" She hugged Sofia tightly, then teased Cable: "Cousin, you're officially off the market – I'll miss teasing you about girls!"

Lady Emily burst into tears of joy, embracing both of them:

"This is the happiest day of my life! I've seen your love grow from the beginning. Sofia, I was the one who helped Cable sneak around to meet you—my heart is so full seeing you both together officially!"

Cable laughed and hugged Lady Emily: "Emily, you're the best sister and friend—your support meant everything to us." Other guests and royals offered their blessings.

As the celebrations continued, King Julian raised his hands: "Tonight, we feast for Cable and Sofia's engagement! Preparations for the royal wedding begin tomorrow."

Cable swept Sofia into a romantic dance under the starlight. His eyes were locked onto hers, shining with adoration, oblivious to any secrets. Sofia smiled back, though her heart was clouded by the truth she held inside.

As the music peaked, Cable pulled her close: "I'm the happiest man alive," he whispered. Sofia's heart skipped a beat: "I'm happy too... I love you, Cable."

Walking toward the banquet hall, Cable leaned in: "Shall we sneak away for a moment alone later?" Sofia hesitated, fearing the intimacy might reveal her nature. "Maybe later, my love," she said softly. Cable noticed her hesitation: "Everything okay? You seem distant for a second." Sofia quickly recovered: "Just overwhelmed with happiness—this night is perfect."

As they took their seats at the head table, Victoria stepped forward. She took Sofia's hands in hers with a graceful smile: "Welcome, Sofia. As your sister-in-law, I am beyond thrilled to see you join this family. Your and Cable's love will be one of the most golden chapters in Eldrida's history."

King Julian stood for the first toast: "To my son Cable and his beloved Sofia—may their love flourish like our kingdom!" The hall erupted in cheers. Sofia smiled gracefully, but her mind whispered: "How long can I keep my secret hidden from the man I love?"

A few days had passed since the engagement celebration. One afternoon, Sofia found herself sitting with Victoria, Cable's sister-in-law, in a secluded corner of the royal sunroom. Victoria, ever the observant and graceful soul, sensed the heavy cloud lingering over Sofia.

Victoria took Sofia's hand and asked softly, "Sofia, you are part of this family now. But your eyes lack the brilliance of a woman in love. Is there something consuming you from within?"

Tears welled up in Sofia's eyes. Victoria's kindness gave her the strength she had been searching for. "Victoria," she whispered, "Cable loves me deeply, but I am living with a shadow that could swallow our relationship. Can love truly survive without the absolute truth?"

Victoria looked at her with profound wisdom. "Truth is often bitter, Sofia, but a palace built on lies will eventually crumble. If you trust Cable, give him the truth. It is better to walk through the fire of honesty than to live in the darkness of fear."

Emboldened by Victoria's words, Sofia made her decision. That night, under the silver glow of the moon, she requested Cable to meet her in the gardens.

Cable arrived, looking handsome in a casual white shirt and black trousers. "Sofia, what's this mysterious meeting about? Couldn't wait till tomorrow to see me?" He tried to be playful, but his smile faltered as he caught the intensity in her gaze.

Sofia's heart raced; her voice was barely a whisper: "Cable... we need to talk." Her tone shifted his mood from playful to deeply concerned. He took a step closer, his eyes locking onto hers. "What is it, Sofia? You're scaring me."

Sofia took a deep breath, steeling herself for the revelation that would change everything: "Cable... I am... a Vampire."

The words hung in the air like a death sentence. Cable's world shattered in an instant. The ground beneath his feet seemed to shake. He stumbled backward, his eyes wide with a paralyzing fear and disbelief, looking at Sofia as if she were a dangerous stranger.

His voice trembled, hollow and broken: "What... are you saying?!" He repeated the words, as if hearing them again would somehow alter their horrifying reality.

Sofia stood frozen, pain etched into every line of her face as she witnessed the raw fear in Cable's eyes—fear directed at her. She reached out her hands, palms upturned in a gesture of absolute vulnerability. "Cable, please... don't be afraid of me. I would never, ever hurt you. I am still the Sofia you love."

Cable's eyes remained fixed on hers, searching for the girl he loved, yet now seeing something otherworldly and monstrous.

He whispered again, his voice barely audible: "A vampire... You're telling me you're a vampire?" His voice cracked with the sheer weight of the emotion, his heart heavy with a mixture of confusion and raw terror.

Sofia nodded slowly, the tears finally spilling over: "Yes, Cable... I am. But my love for you is real." Her voice cracked as she took a gentle, tentative step forward, her hands still extended in a plea for peace. "I know this is shocking, but everything between us – the laughter, the adventures, our whispers in the dead of night – it was all true."

Cable's fear seemed to wrestle violently with his love for her; his expression was torn between the urge to flee and the urge to hold her. He searched her face, seeking some reassurance that the Sofia he knew still existed behind this terrifying revelation.

Sofia's eyes pleaded for a shred of understanding: "I was turned against my will, centuries ago. I've lived in secret among humans, never harming a soul... until I met you. All I wanted was to be with you forever."

Her voice was barely above a whisper: "Do you still see me, Cable – the girl you love – or do you only see a monster now?"

The silence of the moonlit garden had turned suffocating. Those few words—"I am a vampire"—had effectively dismantled Cable's world. He stood frozen, his face a mask of pale shock, his mind reeling under the impossible weight of Sofia's confession.

He looked like a man lost at sea, staring at a horizon that had suddenly vanished. He was caught in a paralyzing tug-of-war between the love he had cherished until a moment ago and the darkness that now stood before him in the form of the woman he adored.

Sofia's eyes overflowed with tears as she witnessed the raw terror and disbelief etched into his features. She realized that his silence was more painful than any shout could ever be. Without another word, her trembling fingers reached for the engagement ring on her left hand.

She slowly slid the band off and extended her hand, offering the glittering ring back to him.

"Return this to me..." she whispered, her voice cracking, "only if you truly want to stay with me after knowing what I am."

The diamond shimmered under the moonlight, a cruel reminder of the promise made just days ago—a promise now tainted by a truth he couldn't grasp. Cable's eyes locked onto hers, searching for the girl he knew, but his hands remained at his sides, paralyzed by a shock so deep it felt like lead in his veins.

Sofia's heart shattered at his lack of movement. Her face crumpled, and tears streamed down her cheeks as she let out a broken sob.

"I understand," she choked out, "if you cannot love a monster."

With that, she turned and walked away into the encroaching shadows of the garden, leaving Cable standing entirely alone. The only sound was the hollow, rhythmic crunch of gravel beneath her feet, fading slowly into an agonizing silence. Cable remained motionless, the ring now a heavy, cold weight in the palm of his hand.

The garden, which had been a sanctuary of love and secret smiles, now echoed only with uncertainty. Cable's face was twisted in a mask of pure anguish, and he spoke to the empty, cold night air:

"So everything I loved about you... was it all a lie?"

The tears finally spilled over, hot and bitter. "My heart beat for a mortal woman... but it was a monster that held me all along. How could you make me love you so much, Sofia... only to reveal that our love was poison?"
