Chapter 4 - Dream Realm

New chapter is here!

I finished the next chap faster then I was going to (Why does this motivation always come up when my exams are going on?), and I don't have the patience to stack them up, so just read this or whatever. :)

Complete explanation of how Reinhard's flaw works is at the end of this chap.

***

When the sun was close to setting, Instructor Rock gathered the sleepers in the foyer of the Sleeper Center and led them outside.

Just like them, other batches of sleepers were also gathered by their instructors in the snowy parks surrounding the white building. It was the academy's medical center.

Reinhard had parted from Cassia and gone on his own. From near the end of the group, he observed the building.

It looked more like a shrine than a hospital. Its interior contained both highly advanced technology and some of the best healers among the Awakened. For the duration of their first journey into the Dream Realm, the bodies of Sleepers would be kept safe in specially designed pods and sustained by the magical powers of those healers if anything unfortunate were to happen on the other side of the spell.

Of course, whether or not they would wake up in the end wholly depended on the sleepers themselves.

Instructor Rock didn't directly take them to the wing containing sleeper pods. Instead, he led them to a comparatively deserted floor and then opened the doors to a spacious gallery that was brightly illuminated by the beautiful crimson rays of the setting sun.

There, they saw rows and rows of wheelchairs. In each wheelchair, there was a person with a blank, strangely peaceful expression on their face. All these people were completely silent, motionless, and still. They did not show any reaction to the appearance of guests.

They all seemed to be… empty.

Instructor Rock looked at the empty people with solemn eyes.

"There is a reason I brought you all here. Look well and remember. Some of you may know who these people are... For those of you who don't, they are called Hollow."

He gritted his teeth.

"Each one of them was once either a Sleeper or an Awakened. Some of them were weak, and some of them were strong. Some were even incredibly powerful. All of them have perished in the Dream Realm."

Seeing his reaction, Reinhard wondered if someone related to Instructor Rock had also turned into a hollow, or maybe he was a softer guy than he seemed.

"If you're lucky, once your spirit is destroyed, your body dies with it. But if not, you'll become just like them. Hollow."

I would rather have someone kill me at that point.

Instructor Rock glanced in the direction where Reinhard stood and then added:

"So don't die out there."

That's favoritism right there. He would have called it unfair, but since he was on the side of 'extra fairness,' it was all good.

***

Half an hour later, Reinhard found himself in his personal room preparing to enter the pod.

Alright, I'll do this in the count of 5.

5. 4. 3. 2. 1.

With that, he stepped forward and climbed into the pod.

In the vast echoing darkness, he heard:

[Welcome to the Dream Realm, Reinhard!]

Reinhard had expected his journey into the dream realm to resemble his first nightmare.

But the moment the spell's voice passed, his senses vanished.

Upon opening his eyes, he saw darkness and nothing else. Something cold pressed on him from all sides; only then did he realize he was underwater.

He kicked and thrashed, his arms slicing through nothing. The pressure on his head increased, and his ears rang as water slid past them.

What followed was the spell's voice.

[New attribute acquired.]

[Attribute Name: Aquatic Mastery]

Air burned in his lungs. In the moment of panic, Reinhard remembered a topic he had read in the library and quickly covered his mouth and nose with both his hands.

Then he exhaled a tiny amount of air; he didn't even have enough for himself, so that was all he could manage.

That action helped him in figuring out the direction of the water surface, and with the help of his newly acquired attribute, he quickly swam there.

The moment his head protruded out of the water, he took such rapid breaths that it hurt his lungs.

After a few seconds his vision settled, and he looked around.

What met him was an endless, jet-black expanse of undulating waves. Above them was an empty black sky. There was no moon, no stars, just a vast, dark vastness of repressive nothingness.

An ocean?! How bad of a luck do I have to have for this to happen!

He didn't have time to curse his situation, though. Reinhard wasn't aware of what kind of nightmare creatures there would be underwater, nor was this a favorable environment to fight in. So he quickly looked around.

A few meters away he saw a weirdly shaped coral-like landmass.

He swam towards it with all his strength. While his form was perfect due to [Aquatic Mastery], the strength behind those movements was barely above average by sleeper standards. That's because he didn't have access to [Titan's Corpus]. This was where the one bad thing about his aspect ability shone: he couldn't have more than one attribute at a time. Even if it was an issue for now, it was a major one.

Luckily, however, no nightmare creature had attacked him in his sprint, and he was able to swim to the large coral landmass.

Upon reaching it and crawling a few meters away from the edge of the platform, he lay down and gazed at the sky.

There was nothing there, but he wasn't lying for stargazing either. His chest moved up and down rapidly as he regained his stamina.

Fuck, without Titan's corpus, my body is still very weak.

Finally having land below him, even if rough, Reinhard was reluctant to stand up and look around for threats.

So he lay there and willed an attribute into existence.

[New attribute acquired.]

[Attribute Name: Sensory Amplification]

As the name suggested, the attribute enhanced his senses. It wouldn't do much, but he was too tired to think at the current moment.

And after all of that was over, Reinhard finally had a moment to address another issue he had noticed a while back but had been ignoring until now.

He was completely naked.

***

Where even is this place?

In all the books he had read about the dream realm, there was no mention of a place like this.

He was now sitting near the edge. The armor he was wearing had a black chest plate with golden designs at its edges. Its shoulder guards, vambraces, cuisses, and greaves were of similar design as well.

The armor was [Pain Eater], an awakened memory he had received in his first nightmare.

Since sitting around was going to achieve nothing, he stood up with a sigh and turned his back towards the shore, ready to explore the coral landmass he was on.

It wasn't very large, less than 20 meters in diameter if he had to guess, but the giant coral spikes were covering the whole island. Actually, it wasn't like an island at all; heck, there wasn't even any smooth surface.

He started traversing through the jagged parts and spikes to explore the whole island; he still had the [Sensory Amplification] attribute on to make sure he could catch any sound of anyone nearby.

However, the direction of his thoughts was quite unrelated to his direct circumstances.

His mind had wandered out to think about Cassia.

I had [Hero's burden] the moment I stepped into the pod, and I only changed it at the moment I needed aquatic mastery to swim... Then shouldn't Cassia be around here somewhere?

With a pause, he continued.

Also, how does this even work? My flaw forces me to help her, but currently I am looking for her just because I feel like it, even if it's slightly because I know my flaw will force me anyways.

For a moment Reinhard had a scary thought.

It isn't putting psychological cues into my mind to do what my flaw requires, right? Fuck, that would be scary.

Huh? But changing my whole way of thinking so I do it wouldn't even make it a flaw; it would just be my nature at that point....

After another minute of walking, he heard a sound coming from his right.

-What? What is that?

He slowed down and walked silently towards the area.

As he got a few meters closer to the point of origination of that sound, he finally figured out what it was.

That was the sound of someone crying, more specifically, a girl.

Yeah, that's her.

He thought with a deadpan.

Taking the situation as amusing was apathetic of him, but he could act like he was sympathetic. He felt it too, but he wasn't the type to ruin his own mood over it.

[New attribute acquired.]

[Attribute Name: Low-Light Perception.]

Instantly his vision cleared even more, as he was easily able to see everything in the dark.

While he had used his aspect too much to be impressed, now he did have a small complaint about it.

This spells naming sense has gotten worse.

[New attribute acquired.]

[Attribute Name: Darkvision.]

Nothing really changed except the name of the attribute.

Hold up, I can change attribute names?

This one still sucks though.

It was simple and got the point across, but—

[New attribute acquired.]

[Attribute Name: Nocturne Vision.]

Much better, I guess.

At that point Reinhard realized he was essentially ignoring a crying, helpless, blind girl in a dangerous world, and more importantly, she was literally waiting for him.

That's a new level of low even for me.

Upon walking a step or two ahead, a hole in the ground revealed itself, its opening partially obscured by a jagged coral spike.

There was enough space for three or four Reinhard's to fit in, though.

In the middle of that space, a pale, blonde-haired girl was sitting on the ground. Her knees were tucked to her chest, her shoulders trembling, face hidden as if she were trying to take up as little space as possible.

Even though Reinhard didn't have enhanced senses now due to switching them for night vision, he could still hear her whispering something. But he couldn't make out the words.

A strange thought entered Reinhard's mind at that point.

That's a pathetic sight.

He was going to help her. Probably. Even without his flaw pushing him. Pity was there—but pity didn't exclude judgment.

Yet it wasn't the usual kind of weakness that bothered him. Depending on others in her position was reasonable. If their roles were reversed, he'd have begged harder.

No, the problem was aesthetics.

Being weak and helpless was understandable, but crying and showing that she was like that wasn't.

Reinhard had grown up without the luxury of visible despair. From his perspective, that was the worst possible response to danger.

Still, he knew that perspective wasn't universal.

It was his.

Also, she is completely naked.

He added and turned off his night vision.

After pausing for a second on how he should do this, he stepped back a few steps silently.

Then he walked ahead once again; this time the sound of his footsteps was quite loud.

Cassia flinched, snapping her head toward the sound.

Before she could fearfully inquire who was there, attributes of the person ahead appeared in front of her.

It was Reinhard.

And then a familiar voice entered her ears.

"It's me, Reinhard," he said.

Reinhard stood a meter away, looking down at her.

But then he realized that his position was quite inconsiderate, and as such, he got closer and crouched in front of her.

Cassia was in a state of shock and disbelief. It was one of those situations where she wondered if it was too good to be true.

"Th- Thank Y—" Her voice cracked, and tears started flowing down with even more speed, but she still sat confused on how to react.

Her brain, after going from a very stressed mode, was hit by a dose of relief. That was why she couldn't process what had happened properly.

Reinhard just sat there in silence.

His flaw wasn't forcing him to intervene by telling her she was okay or any other bullshit.

What do i do now?

***

"Give me your hand," Reinhard said.

Now that Cassia had calmed down from her crying, he decided to give her the other memory he had: Ranger's cloak.

Even though it was just a dormant memory, and Reinhard already had Pain Eater as his armor, it still hurt his soul to give away something so valuable.

My selfish being isn't made to do this kind of thing, dammit!

Still, he didn't really have another option.

Cassia hesitantly raised her hand in his direction. Reinhard took it and transferred the memory.

Her eyes widened in surprise. A moment later, her cheeks flushed red, and she instinctively curled in on herself even more.

Reinhard didn't have night vision anymore, but at this distance he could still clearly see her expression.

What a quick realization; I didn't even get a chance to peek.

The memory activated, and a black cloak formed around Cassia's body. It was long, so long that if she stood up, it would reach below her knees.

As that happened, Reinhard watched her while thinking about what to do next.

He wanted to properly scout the islet. Even if it was too small to have anything useful, staying out in the open felt safer than hiding in this cramped hole.

But Cassia was the problem. He looked at her and let out a quiet sigh.

"You must be tired, right? Go to sleep; I will keep watch."

Cassia hesitated for a second.

"What about you?" she asked. "Aren't you tired?"

Now that she mentioned it…

Reinhard was indeed a bit tired. In fact, he even contemplated both of them sleeping—

[New attribute acquired.]

[Attribute Name: Vigilant Will.]

"Well," he muttered. "I guess that's been taken care of."

He didn't even need to read the description. The name and timing alone made its purpose obvious.

Cassia, who was able to see his attributes, nodded.

She stayed sitting for a moment, unsure of what to do. Then she slowly lay down beside the wall, turning so she was facing Reinhard.

"You'll be here, right?" she asked quietly.

Reinhard knew what she was getting at, but his flaw didn't allow deception, so he had to say the truth.

"We are on an islet right now; it's night, and there's nothing around. I heard your voice while scouting and came here. I'll just finish checking the area."

For a few seconds, there was no response.

Cassia lay still, the cloak pulled close around her.

"No."

The word came out small, as if she weren't sure she was allowed to say it.

She pushed herself up just enough to directly face him.

"I mean, just... don't go right now."

I was going to wait for you to fall asleep anyways.

If only she hadn't asked.

He groaned internally.

Cassia's hand moved slightly towards Reinhard. He noticed that.

He sighed and shifted, sitting down closer, his back resting against the cave wall.

Then he placed his hand over hers.

He didn't grip it.

He just made sure she knew his presence was there.

Reinhard had always been good at observing people and seeing things from their perspective.

Blindness was her flaw. That meant she wasn't just trapped in a dangerous place—she was trapped without sight. And right now, the only thing grounding her was a person she barely knew. Someone she had met only once before.

For now, letting her know he was beside her through touch was enough.

Reinhard was still sitting inside the cave. Cassia had fallen asleep barely a minute after their interaction ended. Around ten minutes had passed since then.

Wait, damn, I can get an attribute that heals injuries, fatigue, hunger, and thirst just by drinking the blood of any living creature? That's going to be extremely useful... Kind off disgusting though.

After a short pause, his thoughts continued.

This aspect ability really is broken. I just need to figure out more ways to use it.

Then an idea suddenly emerged in his mind. His gaze drifted to the girl lying at his side.

I can ask her to tell me the attributes of any sleeper we meet, through which i can have more ideas for my aspect ability.

As ideas began to pour into his mind, Reinhard spent the next half hour trying everything he could think of.

***

Cold wind swept across the islet, rustling Reinhard's red hair.

Its cold.

He thought, then glanced back at the small cave where Cassia was still sleeping.

Without his attribute, he would be tired but not to the point where he'd be forced to sleep. So he swapped it out for one that helped keep his body warm.

After finishing a quick sweep of the entire islet, Reinhard returned to the cave entrance and sat down just outside.

He looked up at the dark sky in silence. The steady sound of waves crashing against the shore was, surprisingly, calming.

***

As a hand suddenly fell on Reinhard's arm, his eyes snapped open, and he immediately turned toward it.

Cassia was sitting behind him, looking just as startled by his reaction.

"Oh! I'm sorry—I didn't mean to wake you up..." she said quickly.

Reinhard sighed inwardly. He doubted he'd gotten more than a few hours of sleep, judging by the darkness outside, but he still felt refreshed.

That was thanks to an attribute he had created—one that let him recover even with very little sleep.

"It's fine," he said as he sat up. Then he added, "You're not tired anymore, right?"

"Yes. I'm fine."

Reinhard didn't have anything else to say. For a few moments, the cave was completely silent; that is, until Cassia spoke again.

"Um… actually, I wanted to give you a memory. Can you give me your hand?"

She raised her hand in his direction.

A memory?

Reinhard took her hand, curious to see what kind of memory he would receive.

His interest faded slightly when he realized it was a rope that could change its length.

Well, I guess it does have its uses..

Before he could respond, Cassia continued.

"Besides the rope, I also have a staff that can generate wind. And a glass bottle that can store infinite water."

Reinhard's eyes widened a little.

While the bottle was quite useful, what surprised him was the fact that Cassia had three memories.

Memories weren't as rare as echoes, but they were still hard to obtain. That made him wonder what she had gone through in her nightmare to obtain three.

That, combined with her flaw, which was just as bad if not worse than his, made him even more curious.

What rank is her aspect, anyway?

He could easily ask. Given their situation, he believed she would tell the truth. And even if she lied, claiming something like "Ascended" or "Transcendent," he could always confirm it by creating a lie detector attribute.

But in the end, it didn't really matter.

"Those are good memories," he said. "They'll be useful."

A small, proud smile appeared on her face.

Reinhard paused, then spoke again.

"Other than the cloak I gave you, I have an armor and two swords."

Cassia suddenly had a slightly surprised expression on her face.

That's payback, he thought, slightly amused.

With no nightmare creatures on the island, it meant Reinhard had obtained those memories in his first nightmare.

Wait, could this be considered boasting in a way?

While his motive for sharing was just because Cassia had done the same, it could still be considered showing off.

But then again, his flaw didn't really stop him from boasting at least.

After their conversation ended, silence once again loomed over the area.

Reinhard hadn't switched his attribute to nocturnal vision, and yet he noticed he was able to see better in the dark than before, even if slightly.

Nice, Scarred Adaptation is doing its job.

His innate ability was like an impressive side character; it was overshadowed by his aspect ability, but in a lot of moments its real value shone.

With a sigh, he stood up. Cassia, who had been sitting quietly, turned her head toward the sound.

Once again, Reinhard preferred going out. The air outside was cooler; it could be too cold for Cassia, though. Still, he asked.

"I'm going outside. Do you want to come? It's cold though."

"Yes," she replied quietly.

Reinhard took her hand and helped her out of the cave.

The moment the cold air hit her, Cassia shivered.

Told you.

[New attribute acquired.]

[Attribute Name: Frost Tolerance]

He guided her toward a coral formation a few meters from the shore and helped her sit down. Reinhard settled nearby, resting his back against another piece of coral.

Once again, they sat in silence, listening to the steady rhythm of the waves.

"Um… do you have a plan for where we're going from here?" Cassia asked, breaking the silence.

Shouldn't I be asking that to the seer of the group?

"I don't," he replied honestly. Then he added, "I figured we could wait until morning, make a raft, and set sail in a random direction."

"Oh."

***

Around an hour passed by as Reinhard and Cassie continued to enjoy the peaceful silence.

They talked quite a lot, more like she did, enough for him to notice Cassie becoming a lot more comfortable and open now.

Suddenly, Reinhard caught a slight change in the sound of the sea. It was as though something was shifting.

He glanced at Cassie; the slight movement of her body told him she had heard that too.

His attention was brought back to the distant horizon when he saw that corner of the sky turning grey.

Soon, a glimpse of a pale sun could be seen rising above the horizon.

A new day had come to the starless void.

And with it, the dark sea suddenly surged.

The black, opaque water suddenly seethed, as though a living creature were desperately trying to avoid the pale light of the coming dawn.

Reinhard cautiously stood up from his spot.

[New attribute acquired.]

[Attribute Name: Titan's Corpus]

Getting Titan's Corpus almost didn't make sense. If a nightmare creature attacked him from inside the dark sea, he doubted he would be able to win, especially since the terrain would be heavily in the creature's favor. But he still wished for the attribute for his peace of mind.

"Reinhard, what's going on?" Cassie's troubled voice entered his ears from behind him as he was carefully approaching the corner of the coral platform.

What he saw left him speechless.

He spoke up in a doubtful tone.

"The sea seems to be... receding."

"R-receding?"

Reinhard did not confirm; instead, he continued to watch as the water level slowly, and then faster and faster, continued to drop.

As the sun climbed up, the monstrous ebb tide continued. Soon Reinhard found himself standing on the edge of a 100-meter-long coral pillar.

At that time, the dark surface of the water began to be punctured here and there by sharp crimson blades.

As it dropped even further, it was as though a crimson forest was slowly rising from the black depths. The "trees" were made of something resembling coral, growing chaotically into each other and stretching toward the sky.

They were colossal in size, with irregular protrusions entwining and merging together, looking monumental and eerie in the black and red reality of the sunlit void.

Half an hour later, Reinhard looked below; the whole dark sea had disappeared.

That is crazy... and convenient.

***

"What are we going to do now?" Cassie asked.

Reinhard was sitting cross-legged near the edge of the coral pillar, looking down at the labyrinth below.

He had already explained everything to her.

The dark sea had receded with the sunlight, leaving the crimson maze exposed. If his assumption was correct, it would return at night.

But should he really take that kind of risk?

Maybe we should wait a day to really make sure?

The best course of action was to wait a day; they wouldn't die without eating just for a day, after all. And it was far better to observe a whole cycle to make sure the dark sea only ascended during the night and not some other time.

The second-best choice was for him to go down alone, scout around the area, and then come back up before evening to be safe.

But he didn't feel like taking the risk.

[New attribute acquired.]

[Attribute Name: Clear Sight.]

Just then he realized it had been a few seconds, and he hadn't replied to Cassie yet.

Hm, wait, she asked what we are going to do now, right? Or was it something else?

He glanced over his shoulder.

"Let me see what kind of Nightmare Creatures roam around here first," he said. "We can decide after that."

Cassie nodded slowly.

"So… you might go down there?"

"Maybe."

She traced the edge of the coral with her fingers.

"Are there any nightmare creatures below?" She asked.

Reinhard turned his gaze back to the labyrinth.

With a combination of attributes to locate life forms and enhance his vision, Reinhard observed the kind of nightmare creatures roaming below.

"They are called carapace scavengers. All of them are awakened beasts," Reinhard said.

Fortunately, he could create an attribute to see the cores of not only nightmare creatures but humans too as well as see the names of any species of nightmare creatures.

"Oh…"

A moment passed before she asked quietly,

"What do they look like?"

Reinhard watched one of the creatures crawl over a broken coral ridge.

"They have four long segmented legs, which look like scythes."

He paused briefly, following its movement.

"Above is a human-like torso; it's in thick chitinous armor. They have no neck; as for their head, it has two narrow eye slits and a mouth with several slimy mandibles," then with a pause. "Also, instead of hands, they have two huge pincers."

Cassie's face paled a bit.

Before she could reply, Reinhard continued.

"You asked what we're doing next."

He shifted his gaze away from the maze.

"We'll stay up here today. Tomorrow we'll go down and explore."

Cassie took a quiet breath.

"Can you beat them?"

"If it's more than one, I'm not sure," Reinhard said. "But one at a time… probably."

Of course he wasn't really sure how hard it would be; dormant humans had no business dealing with Awakened nightmare creatures after all, even if they were beasts. But Reinhard was no normal dormant; instead, he was pretty sure he could give some awakened humans a run for their money.

A carapace scavenger was completely covered with armor, and it seemed quite difficult to pierce it or damage the creature. But Reinhard could still target its legs or joints, even if covered by armor; flexible parts of the body could never be too rigid.

But there was another big problem.

That was his divine sword; if it refused to consider carapace scavengers worthy of a fight, then he would have to fight with a sheathed sword because it wouldn't let him use his other sword, [Bright Fury].

There were two things he could do.

Either be prepared to fight the creature with a sheathed sword.

Or temporarily give his divine sword to Cassie.

Hell no!

Cassie knew about his flaw, or at least the part where he was forced to help someone if they asked for it.

He couldn't harm her unless he deemed her evil, either.

Would I consider her evil if she took my sword and refused to give it back?

That was a funny thought.

But still, what if she told someone that he had a divine memory on him?

Wait, who will she even tell?

Reinhard knew she was grateful to him for helping her, even if the catalyst to that was something he didn't like.

She had gotten a lot more comfortable with him as well, considering the conversations they had.

She had even told him to call her Cassie; that had to mean something, right?

Fighting with a sheathed sword meant he couldn't even cut normal skin, and going against an awakened beast in a situation like that was just asking to be killed.

He could try that once he was sure he fared alright against a carapace scavenger first.

Ugh, I can't believe I am really going to do this.

***

This probably felt like a filler chap, I will try to upload the next one asap to make up for it, I guess.

Though, with this we are officially ahead of the old version too!

Anyways, as for how Reinhard's current flaw works. Here is the full explanation:

1. If Reinhard directly witnesses clear injustice, harm, or abuse, he is compelled to intervene if he reasonably believes he can influence the outcome.

2. Reinhard must protect individuals who are clearly weaker, defenseless, or unable to protect themselves, provided:

They are not actively malicious.

Helping them does not guarantee his own death.

3.If someone directly asks Reinhard for help, he cannot refuse unless:

Fulfilling the request would prevent a greater moral outcome (e.g., saving many more lives).

The request itself is immoral or harmful to innocent people.

The situation guarantees his own death.

4. Reinhard cannot lie or deliberately deceive.

This includes half-truths, misleading wording, or strategic omissions meant to manipulate belief.

Remaining silent or refusing to answer is allowed if it avoids deception.

5. Reinhard cannot act out of revenge, spite, or personal vendetta. Harmful actions must always be justified by preventing harm or stopping wrongdoing, not personal emotional satisfaction.

6. Reinhard cannot harm, manipulate, or sacrifice others for personal gain. The only exception is when doing so serves a clear morally justified purpose (e.g., preventing greater harm or protecting innocents).

7. Reinhard cannot intentionally kill someone unless he sincerely believes the target is morally corrupt, malicious, or actively causing unjust harm.

8. When forced to choose between multiple heroic actions, the flaw prioritizes the option that maximizes morally good outcomes.

9. Reinhard is not forced into reckless behavior. He may:

Retreat

Delay intervention

Plan strategically

as long as these actions ultimately serve a heroic outcome.

10. Reinhard is not compelled to sacrifice his life in situations where the outcome requires certain death, even if that sacrifice would guarantee success or save any number of people. Or atleast not for a situation that he can find himself in any time soon.

Just a hint for you all even if its nothing serious, If you consider point 8 and 10 together, it shows that Reinhard's flaw considers his life as more valuable then the whole humanity even.

So he isn't going to self sacrifice any time soon.

All in all,

He's so cooked.

And im gonna have fun writing that.
