The forest looked normal from above.
Morning sunlight filtered through the canopy, scattering golden light across the moss-covered ground. Birds hopped along the branches, and the faint rustle of insects returned to the undergrowth as the ecosystem slowly recovered from the pressure of the previous night.
To anyone walking through the woods, nothing would seem unusual.
But Kael knew something different was waiting beneath the surface.
He stood at the western ridge of the forest where the terrain dipped into a cluster of rocky hills covered with tangled roots and thick ferns. The location matched exactly with what he had seen through the Vermin Throne ability the previous night.
Two hundred meters below the soil.
Something ancient existed there.
Ashfang stepped forward beside him, sniffing the air cautiously. The Alpha Direwolf's fur bristled slightly as he scanned the forest around them.
"…Ground smells strange."
Kael nodded.
"Yes."
Izazel approached from behind, stepping carefully over a fallen log while examining the surrounding terrain with curiosity rather than caution.
"This is the place?"
Kael pointed toward a section of earth near the base of the ridge.
"Somewhere under here."
The vampire prince crouched down and brushed aside a layer of leaves with his gloved hand.
"Interesting."
Ashfang tilted his head slightly.
"…No tunnel."
Kael knew what the wolf meant.
Normally the vermin network revealed every burrow and passage beneath the soil.
But here…
There was nothing.
No rat tunnels.
No insect pathways.
No natural caverns.
The underground space existed completely sealed from the ecosystem above.
That alone was unnatural.
Riven emerged silently from the forest shadows a moment later.
The Void Clan assassin had moved ahead earlier to scout the area, and his arrival was so quiet that even Ashfang's ears flicked only at the last moment.
"There is an entrance," Riven said calmly.
Kael turned toward him.
"Where?"
Riven gestured toward a cluster of moss-covered rocks further down the ridge.
"Hidden."
They approached carefully.
At first the rocks appeared ordinary.
But as Kael pushed aside the thick curtain of vines hanging across them, the shape of a narrow opening became visible.
Not natural stone.
A doorway.
Carved long ago and now half-buried beneath roots and soil.
The opening descended into darkness.
Ashfang stepped closer and sniffed the entrance cautiously.
"…Cold."
Kael felt it as well.
The air flowing from the tunnel carried the scent of ancient stone and dust.
Izazel smiled faintly.
"Well."
"That is certainly not a rat hole."
Riven stepped inside first.
His dagger appeared in his hand without sound.
The assassin moved through the darkness like a shadow slipping into deeper shadow.
Kael followed.
Ashfang entered beside him, his massive frame brushing against the tunnel walls.
Izazel walked in last, a faint crimson glow forming in his palm to illuminate the passage.
The tunnel descended sharply beneath the ridge.
Stone walls surrounded them.
But these walls were not rough natural rock.
They had been shaped.
Chiseled.
Constructed.
The passage stretched forward like the corridor of a forgotten fortress.
Dust covered the floor.
Thick.
Undisturbed.
Ashfang sniffed cautiously.
"…No beasts."
Riven knelt briefly and examined the dust.
"No footprints."
Kael frowned slightly.
"Not even vermin?"
Riven shook his head.
"Nothing."
Izazel's crimson light flickered slightly as he studied the walls.
"This place has been sealed for a long time."
They continued deeper.
The tunnel widened gradually as they descended further underground.
The walls began showing carvings.
At first the symbols were faint.
Just shallow grooves worn down by centuries of erosion.
But as they moved deeper, the markings became clearer.
Ashfang stopped suddenly.
"…Statue."
The wolf's voice carried confusion.
Kael looked ahead.
A massive stone statue stood inside a chamber carved from the surrounding rock.
Time had not been kind to it.
The statue's head had broken off long ago and lay shattered across the floor. Moss grew along its shoulders, and cracks split through its body like spiderwebs.
But the figure itself was still recognizable.
It was not human.
Nor beast.
The shape resembled a tall armored creature with elongated limbs and clawed hands.
Its body appeared partially covered with sculpted scales.
Ashfang sniffed cautiously.
"…Strange."
Izazel walked slowly around the statue.
His crimson light revealed more details.
Additional statues stood along the chamber walls.
Some broken.
Some collapsed.
All depicting similar creatures.
"Interesting…" Izazel murmured.
Kael studied the carvings along the statue's base.
Symbols.
Rows of strange symbols etched into the stone.
He did not recognize them.
But Izazel did.
The vampire prince suddenly stopped moving.
His expression shifted.
"…That's impossible."
Kael looked at him.
"What?"
Izazel crouched beside the statue's base and traced one of the symbols with his finger.
"These markings…"
He hesitated.
"…predate Bloodheart."
The words echoed quietly through the chamber.
Ashfang's ears flicked.
"…Older than vampires?"
Izazel nodded slowly.
"Yes."
Riven stepped closer.
"What civilization?"
Izazel shook his head.
"I'm not sure."
The vampire prince continued examining the carvings.
"These symbols belong to something much older."
He stood again.
"The Bloodheart family is ancient."
"Our lineage stretches back thousands of years."
"But these…"
Izazel gestured around the chamber.
"…were carved long before that."
Kael's eyes narrowed slightly.
"How old?"
Izazel looked up toward the stone ceiling above them.
"Possibly…"
"…ten thousand years."
The silence that followed was heavy.
Ashfang sniffed the statue again.
"…Dead people?"
"Probably," Izazel said casually.
"But very interesting dead people."
Kael continued studying the room.
Broken statues lined the chamber walls.
Each one depicted a creature similar to the first.
Tall.
Armored.
Almost reptilian in appearance.
The carvings beneath them seemed like writing.
Records of some kind.
Kael spoke quietly.
"This was a city."
Riven nodded.
"Underground."
Kael glanced down the corridor beyond the statue chamber.
The tunnel continued deeper.
The stone floor sloped downward again, leading toward a much larger cavern further below.
Ancient ruins buried beneath the forest.
Izazel smiled faintly.
"Well."
"This just became significantly more interesting."
They moved forward.
The tunnels expanded into a massive underground complex.
Collapsed hallways stretched through the darkness.
Broken pillars lay scattered across the floors.
Ancient doorways led into chambers long buried beneath fallen stone.
Everywhere Kael looked, he saw signs of a lost civilization.
And everywhere…
The same symbols appeared.
Strange writing carved into walls and pillars.
Some glowed faintly when Izazel's crimson light passed over them.
"…Magic residue," Izazel said quietly.
Kael looked at him.
"Active?"
"No."
Izazel shook his head.
"Ancient."
He touched one of the glowing carvings.
"This magic faded thousands of years ago."
Riven scanned the surrounding tunnels carefully.
"Still dangerous?"
Izazel shrugged.
"Probably."
Ashfang moved slowly through the ruins.
The wolf's nose twitched repeatedly as he scanned the air.
"…Something smells."
Kael noticed it too.
A faint scent.
Not rot.
Not blood.
Something older.
Something buried.
Kael spoke quietly.
"Deeper."
Riven nodded.
The assassin moved ahead, guiding them through the winding tunnels.
The ruins grew larger the further they descended.
Soon the passage opened into an enormous underground cavern.
The ceiling stretched far above them.
Natural rock formations hung like jagged teeth from the stone roof.
And scattered across the cavern floor…
Were the remains of a massive ancient city.
Broken towers.
Collapsed bridges.
Stone buildings crushed beneath centuries of falling rock.
The ruins of something enormous.
Izazel stared at the cavern in silence.
"…Well."
"That confirms it."
Kael looked at him.
"What?"
Izazel's voice was quieter than usual.
"This wasn't just a settlement."
The vampire prince gestured across the ruined city.
"This was a capital."
Ashfang sniffed the air again.
"…Movement."
Kael froze.
The Vermin Throne instinctively activated.
His awareness surged outward through the underground network.
But the vermin signals were gone.
Every insect.
Every rat.
Every creature beneath the soil…
Was fleeing.
Running in every direction.
Kael's eyes widened.
"They're retreating."
Riven's voice dropped to a whisper.
"Why?"
Ashfang's ears flattened suddenly.
The Alpha Direwolf stared into the deeper shadows of the cavern.
"…Something coming."
Izazel slowly extinguished the crimson light in his hand.
Darkness swallowed the cavern.
But in the silence…
They heard it.
A sound.
Faint.
Distant.
Stone grinding slowly against stone.
Something large moving in the darkness beneath the ruins.
Kael's hand moved toward his blade.
And far below the broken city…
Something ancient had just awakened.
