In fact, there was one more scene at the end of the third episode.
After devouring Senior Mami's head, the Witch swooped down and devoured her body as well.
The onlookers, Madoka and Sayaka, were terrified. They held hands tightly, their heads pressed together, their faces contorted in horror.
"Sign a contract with me right now!"
Kyubey urged them, his voice grave, without turning his head. "Madoka, Sayaka! Decide on your wish, quickly!"
Before he could finish speaking, Homura Akemi's voice rang out: "That won't be necessary."
Kyubey turned to face her.
Homura Akemi leaped into the air, somersaulted, and landed before the Witch. "I'll deal with this creature."
Because she was so close to the Witch, the creature immediately attacked her. But instead of harming her, Homura elegantly dispatched it in a few swift moves.
After defeating the Witch, Homura dispelled her magical girl form, reverting to her school uniform. As she approached Madoka and Sayaka, she remarked, "You two just dodged a bullet."
The stone platform in the distance was a gruesome, bloody spectacle that chilled them to the bone.
"Remember this scene well. This is the fate of a magical girl," Homura Akemi warned again.
The Witch's Barrier vanished, and the three found themselves standing at the base of the original hospital building.
A Grief Seed slowly descended from the air, landing before Kyubey.
Homura Akemi stepped forward and picked it up.
"Give it back to her," Sayaka said softly.
Homura Akemi turned to face Sayaka and walked toward her.
"Give it back! This... this is..." Sayaka's eyes welled with tears. "Sister Mami's! I told you to give it back to Sister Mami!"
Homura Akemi's expression remained cold. "Correct. This is something that exists for magical girls. You have no right to touch it." With that, she walked away silently.
Kyubey, who had remained silent throughout, blinked.
Sayaka burst into tears, her face streaming with tears.
The protagonist knelt on the ground, looking utterly dejected. Tears dripped down her cheeks, but no sound escaped her lips. She simply lowered her head and stared blankly at the ground.
At this point, the main part of the third episode officially ended.
However, the ending theme changed again.
The EDs for the first two episodes, titled "See You Tomorrow," were warm and healing, much like the opening theme "Connect." Even the visuals maintained a bright and comforting tone.
The third episode's ED took a sudden turn, shifting to a darker melody and style. The visuals became more somber:
The protagonist walked past a series of figures, then began to run. She ran faster and faster through the darkness until only blackness remained.
Of course, all the figures were mere silhouettes, their features indistinct.
When only darkness remained, an eye opened within the void. Inside the eye, a figure appeared—the protagonist's silhouette, also reduced to a mere outline.
As the eye gradually faded into the distance, the ED drew to a close.
Around 12:30 AM, the third episode of the animation finally ended. Yet Okino Reiko, watching on her television, remained frozen in shock. The death of Senior Mami had been too shocking, too unexpected, to allow her to recover even after the credits had rolled.
Several minutes passed, but the image of Senior Mami's neck being bitten off by a Witch still lingered in her mind.
In the world of popular Magical Girl Anime, even when the protagonists faced danger—like in Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha, where the protagonist occasionally got injured or found herself in near-death situations—they always managed to escape. She had never heard of a Magical Girl Anime where a member of the main cast was so brutally killed, with her neck being bitten off by a monster.
Puella Magi Madoka Magica was just too absurd.
It was like a super mudslide in the Magical Girl Anime genre, making it impossible not to be shocked and deeply impressed.
In fact, Okino Reiko wasn't the only one who was shocked.
Although the first two episodes of the anime had felt rather ordinary, causing some viewers to drop it before the third episode, it had still been ranked at the top of the pre-release anticipation list for new anime. Combined with the anime's relentless marketing, its exceptionally high-quality animation, and its exquisite art style, it had managed to retain most of its audience...
The number of viewers following the series was at least in the millions.
Then, when the third episode aired, it stunned millions of viewers.
No one could have predicted such a turn of events. After seeing Senior Mami's head bitten off, all the viewers were left dumbfounded.
As soon as the animation ended, the internet erupted in heated discussion:
"They promised this was a healing anime! Healing anime don't kill people! Can someone explain what happened to Senior Mami's neck being bitten off by a Witch?"
"This is false advertising! How is this a healing anime? It's clearly a depressing anime!"
"Okay, I could forgive the deceptive advertising, but they even lied in the OP and the EDs of the first two episodes! The moment Senior died in the third episode, they couldn't hide it anymore and immediately released the real ED, right?"
"I knew Old Thief Lin's anime always had deaths, but I never thought he'd dare touch a Magical Girl Anime... This is a Magical Girl Anime! Is this guy a devil?"
"My entire family is shocked! Magical girls are now a high-risk profession. I can never look at another Magical Girl Anime the same way again."
"What did Old Thief Lin say in that magazine interview before the third episode aired? He said, 'Isn't the daily life of beautiful girls healing? Especially Mami Tomoe—she's so reliable, her very presence is comforting and healing.' He even promised that heartwarming scenes were coming soon... Well, isn't this just so heartwarming?"
"You bastard! I really liked Senior Mami! I can't believe he killed her off in just the third episode! Old Thief Lin, you've gone too far! Damn it! So damn it!"
"No wonder Old Thief Lin kept emphasizing before the animation aired that this was a Magical Girl Anime for ages 15 to 30, not for children. If kids watch this, their dreams will be shattered on the spot. They'll never want to be a magical girl again when they grow up."
The third episode's ending was so sudden and shocking that discussions went wild.
On forums, related posts popped up one after another, unstoppable.
In major animation chat groups, regardless of whether members had watched Puella Magi Madoka Magica, almost everyone was discussing the scene where Senior Mami lost her head.
Even in unrelated chat groups, the topic was being widely discussed.
Fueled by this massive discussion, the animation's popularity soared, breaking out of its niche.
