Chapter 97 - Protocol and First Impressions

The celebration within the Grand Harmony Hall had only just begun to regain its rhythm when the sharp voice of a palace eunuch echoed once more—

"The Second Prince, Xu Zeyan… the Third Prince, Xu Zelin… and Her Highness the Little Princess arrive!"

At once, the hall stirred.

Officials straightened.

Conversations ceased.

All eyes turned toward the entrance.

---

The Entrance

Three young figures stepped into the hall.

At the front walked Second Prince Xu Zeyan, only thirteen, yet already carrying the composure expected of royalty. His robes of deep blue trailed neatly behind him, his posture straight, his expression calm and controlled.

Beside him was Third Prince Xu Zelin, also thirteen, his movements more relaxed, his gaze curious as he took in the grandeur of the hall.

Between them walked the youngest—

The Little Princess.

Dressed in soft pink silk, her steps were smaller, but her eyes sparkled with barely contained excitement.

---

Perfect Etiquette

Unlike the earlier informality of her nature, this time—

They followed protocol perfectly.

The three of them walked directly toward the imperial dais.

In unison, they bowed deeply.

"Greetings to Father Emperor, Mother Empress, and Grandmother Empress Dowager."

Their voices were clear and respectful.

The Emperor nodded, satisfaction evident in his gaze.

"You may rise."

The Empress Dowager, seated beside the Empress, observed them with quiet approval.

"Good," she said calmly.

"You have not forgotten your manners."

Only after receiving permission did the three rise properly.

Only then—

Did their attention shift outward.

---

The First Glance

Their gazes moved across the hall.

Past the nobles.

Past the ministers.

And then—

They saw her.

Yue Ning.

---

The Princess Recognizes Her

The Little Princess froze for half a heartbeat.

Then her eyes widened instantly.

"It's her—!"

Before Xu Zeyan or Xu Zelin could react, she had already stepped forward, her excitement impossible to contain.

"Elder Sister!"

Her voice rang clearly across the hall as she rushed toward Yue Ning.

A wave of surprise swept through the nobles.

Because unlike the princess—

Yue Ning did not move in haste.

---

A Calm Acknowledgment

As the Little Princess approached, Yue Ning rose gracefully from her seat.

She did not bow.

She did not kneel.

Instead—

She inclined her head slightly.

A calm, composed acknowledgment.

"Your Highness."

Her voice was gentle.

Respectful.

But without the formality of submission.

The hall immediately grew still.

Because everyone present knew—

This was not a mistake.

This was the effect of the imperial edict.

---

A Moment of Contrast

The contrast was striking.

Three royal children who had just demonstrated perfect etiquette before the Emperor—

And one young woman who stood calmly, offering only a slight nod.

Yet—

No one spoke.

No one dared question it.

Because the Emperor himself had allowed it.

---

The Princess's Joy

The Little Princess paid no attention to any of this.

She reached Yue Ning and immediately took her hand.

"You didn't come see me again!"

Her tone held a small, genuine complaint.

"I was waiting for you!"

Yue Ning's expression softened slightly.

"I've been occupied, Your Highness."

"That's not fair," the Little Princess insisted softly. "You promised before."

"I remember."

"Then you have to come tomorrow!"

Yue Ning smiled faintly.

"…Alright."

---

The Princes Observe

A few steps away, Xu Zeyan and Xu Zelin had stopped.

They did not interrupt.

They observed.

Because for them—

This was the first time seeing Yue Ning.

---

Xu Zelin's Curiosity

Xu Zelin crossed his arms lightly, studying her openly.

"So this is her…"

He spoke in a low voice, just enough for his brother to hear.

"The one who doesn't kneel."

There was no accusation in his tone—

Only interest.

Xu Zeyan did not respond immediately.

His gaze remained fixed on Yue Ning.

Not on her beauty.

Not on her clothing.

But on her composure.

She doesn't show even the slightest discomfort…

Even under this much attention.

---

Xu Zeyan Steps Forward

After a brief moment, Xu Zeyan walked forward.

Xu Zelin followed.

As they approached, Yue Ning turned toward them.

Once again—

She did not bow.

She inclined her head slightly.

"Second Prince. Third Prince."

Her tone remained calm.

Natural.

---

A Subtle Tension

A few nobles exchanged glances.

Even though the edict allowed it—

Seeing her greet the princes without bowing still felt unusual.

But Xu Zeyan showed no reaction.

Instead, he spoke calmly,

"You are Yue Ning."

It was not a question.

Yue Ning nodded slightly.

"Yes, Your Highness."

---

Measuring Words

Xu Zeyan studied her for a moment.

Then said,

"You remain composed."

Again—

Not praise.

Not criticism.

Just observation.

Yue Ning replied simply,

"There is no reason not to be."

Xu Zeyan held her gaze for a moment longer.

Then nodded once.

---

Xu Zelin Speaks Freely

Xu Zelin, on the other hand, was far less restrained.

"I heard about what happened earlier."

"You defeated Lin Qingya?"

His tone was direct.

Curious.

Yue Ning answered calmly,

"It was only a small exchange."

Xu Zelin raised an eyebrow.

"Everyone keeps saying that."

Then he smiled slightly.

"I think they're lying."

---

The Princess Interrupts Again

Before the conversation could deepen, the Little Princess tugged Yue Ning's sleeve.

"I told you about them before!"

She pointed back at her brothers.

"This is Second Brother, and this is Third Brother!"

Xu Zelin laughed softly.

"She's introducing us now?"

Xu Zeyan's expression softened just slightly.

---

Xu Chen Joins

At that moment, Xu Chen stepped forward.

His presence immediately shifted the atmosphere.

"Zeyan. Zelin."

Both princes turned and bowed slightly.

"Elder Brother."

Despite their young age, the hierarchy was clear.

---

A Quiet Exchange

Xu Zelin glanced between Xu Chen and Yue Ning.

"So it's true then."

Xu Chen's voice was steady.

"Yes."

Xu Zelin smiled.

"Well… you chose someone interesting."

Xu Chen did not respond.

But his gaze briefly shifted toward Yue Ning—

And did not move away.

---

Xu Zeyan's Understanding

Xu Zeyan spoke once more, calmly,

"Father's decision is rarely without reason."

He looked at Yue Ning.

"And now… I see part of it."

It was not full approval.

But it was acknowledgment.

---

The Court Takes Note

The officials watched closely.

Because even these small interactions held meaning.

Yue Ning had:

Not bowed

Not shown fear

Not shown arrogance

And yet—

She had not caused offense.

Even the princes had accepted it.

---

A Place Taking Shape

The Little Princess, unconcerned with any of this, continued holding Yue Ning's hand.

"Come sit with me later," she whispered eagerly.

Yue Ning nodded slightly.

---

The Balance of Power

As the princes took their seats and the banquet resumed, the atmosphere shifted once more.

But this time, it was quieter.

More settled.

Because the court had just witnessed something subtle—

But significant.

Yue Ning had stood before the royal family.

Acknowledged them.

And remained exactly as she was—

Unshaken.

---

The Beginning of Recognition

From that moment on, one truth became clearer than ever—

Yue Ning's position was no longer just granted by decree.

It was being quietly accepted.

Step by step.

Gaze by gaze.

Word by word.

And in the silent language of the imperial court—

That acceptance meant everything.
