Chapter 116 - Quiet Evening, Unspoken Ease

The palace had returned to its usual rhythm.

Courtiers moved through the halls with measured steps, officials resumed their duties, and the echoes of tension that once lingered had faded as if they had never been there. The rebellion had ended cleanly, leaving no visible scar upon the surface of the empire.

Yet for those who stood at its center, the silence that followed was different.

It was lighter.

That evening, far from the formal halls and watchful eyes, Xu Chen and Yue Ning walked through a quiet garden within the inner palace. Lanterns glowed softly along the stone paths, their warm light reflecting gently across the still water of a nearby pond.

The air was calm.

Unhurried.

For once, there was nothing demanding their attention.

Yue Ning walked slightly ahead, her steps slow, her fingers brushing lightly against the leaves of a low branch as she passed. She paused near the edge of the pond, looking down at the faint ripples on its surface.

"It ended quickly," she said.

Xu Chen stopped beside her. "It was meant to."

Yue Ning glanced at him, a faint smile forming. "You didn't leave him any room."

"He didn't expect hesitation," Xu Chen replied.

"And you gave him none."

Xu Chen said nothing.

The quiet between them was not empty—it carried understanding, the kind that did not need to be spoken aloud.

Yue Ning turned her gaze back to the water. "It's strange."

"What is?"

"How something so large… can disappear so easily."

Xu Chen's voice remained calm. "It didn't disappear. It was contained."

Yue Ning's smile deepened slightly. "You always say things like that."

Xu Chen looked at her. "Because it's true."

She let out a soft breath, almost amused, then stepped away from the pond, continuing along the path. This time, her pace was even slower, more relaxed than before.

After a moment, she spoke again, her tone lighter. "It's quiet now."

"Yes."

"No officials waiting. No urgent reports."

Xu Chen walked beside her. "For now."

Yue Ning glanced at him, a hint of playfulness in her eyes. "You don't know how to enjoy peace, do you?"

Xu Chen's expression remained unchanged. "I do."

"Then why do you sound like it won't last?"

"Because it won't."

Yue Ning stopped walking.

Xu Chen took one more step before pausing as well.

She turned toward him fully now, her gaze steady. "Even so… it's here."

Xu Chen met her eyes.

For a brief moment, neither of them spoke.

Then Yue Ning stepped closer.

"Just this moment," she said softly. "You don't have to think beyond it."

Xu Chen did not respond immediately.

But he did not look away either.

Yue Ning's hand lifted slightly, resting lightly against his sleeve—not holding, not pulling, just there.

"Stay," she said quietly.

There was no command in her voice.

No insistence.

Just a simple request.

Xu Chen's gaze softened almost imperceptibly.

"I am here," he said.

Yue Ning smiled faintly.

"That's not the same," she replied.

Xu Chen did not argue.

Instead, he reached out, his hand closing gently over hers where it rested against his sleeve. The movement was simple, unhurried, but it carried a quiet certainty.

Yue Ning's fingers stilled for a moment—then relaxed within his grasp.

The night remained calm around them.

A soft breeze moved through the garden, carrying the faint scent of flowers, the distant sound of water, and nothing else.

No urgency.

No pressure.

Only stillness.

Yue Ning stepped a little closer, her voice softer now. "You always stand like you're waiting for something."

Xu Chen looked at her. "And you don't?"

She shook her head slightly. "Not right now."

There was a brief pause.

Then, almost without thinking, she leaned lightly against him.

Not fully.

Not heavily.

Just enough to close the distance between them.

Xu Chen did not move away.

His hand remained around hers, steady and warm.

The silence stretched again, but this time, it felt different.

Not thoughtful.

Not distant.

Just… peaceful.

After a while, Yue Ning spoke again, her voice quiet against the stillness. "When things calm down like this… it feels almost unreal."

Xu Chen's gaze remained forward. "It is real."

"Then it's rare."

"Yes."

Yue Ning let out a soft breath. "Then we shouldn't waste it."

Xu Chen glanced down at her slightly.

"We're not," he said.

Yue Ning smiled.

The lantern light flickered gently around them, casting soft shadows across the path. Somewhere in the distance, a night bird called once, then fell silent again.

Time passed, though neither of them marked it.

There was no need.

Because for once, there was nothing waiting beyond this moment.

No decisions.

No conflict.

No hidden movements beneath the surface.

Only the quiet presence of each other.

And that was enough.

Yue Ning finally straightened slightly, though her hand remained in his. She looked up at him, her expression calm, but softer than before.

"It won't stay like this forever," she said.

"No," Xu Chen replied.

"But we'll have moments like this again."

"Yes."

Yue Ning's smile returned, faint but certain.

"Then that's enough."

Xu Chen did not disagree.

They stood there a little longer before continuing along the path, their steps slow, unhurried, their presence blending into the quiet night as if they were simply another part of it.

The world beyond would continue.

It always did.

But for now—

There was nothing else that mattered.
