Chapter 22 - Chapter 22: The Crimson Sky and the Prophecy of the Void

The atmosphere above the Iron Pass had turned into a thick, suffocating soup of copper and sulfur. The retreat of the Solari army was no longer a tactical withdrawal; it was a panicked flight through a landscape that had ceased to make sense. High above, the sun did not set. Instead, it was being devoured by a hemorrhaging sky, a deep, bruised red that bled into the horizon, signaling the activation of the Final Judgment.

Lucian stood atop the wreckage of Saint Beatrice's carriage, his breathing slow and heavy. The mana of a Saint was not easily digested. It felt like molten lead circulating through his veins, clashing with the obsidian chill of his original core. Every few seconds, a spark of white light would erupt from his skin, only to be dragged back down by the gravity of his Sovereign mana.

"Lucian!" Shizuka's voice cut through the roar of the wind. She landed beside him, her black armor splattered with the golden blood of the Seraphs. She looked at his flickering skin, her eyes wide with alarm. "Your aura... it's fracturing. We need to get you back to the palace."

"There is no time," Lucian rasped. He looked up at the sky. A massive, circular glyph was forming in the stratosphere, its diameter spanning hundreds of miles. It was a geometric nightmare of interlocking runes, humming with a frequency that made the very bones of the mountains ache. "The Pope isn't just targeting the pass. He's targeting the entire ley line network of Albion. He's going to cauterize the kingdom."

Aria appeared from the shadows, her form flickering. "Master, the shadow-constructs are dissolving. The 'Final Judgment' is a high-frequency solar pulse. It's erasing the concept of darkness in the surrounding five hundred leagues. My spies in the North... they've gone silent. Everything is burning."

Selene descended from the crimson clouds, her silver wings looking gray and tarnished in the unnatural light. She looked at the giant glyph in the sky, her face pale. "This isn't just a spell. It's an apocalypse. The Vatican has unlocked the Seventh Seal. They are calling down the 'Breath of the Primeval Sun'. It will leave nothing but glass."

The sheer scale of the threat demanded a reaction that transcended conventional magic. Lucian knew that his current level, though high, was insufficient to block a continental-scale eradication spell. He needed to reach the next stage of the Monarch's Heritage.

"Selene, Shizuka, Aria... form the Trinity," Lucian commanded, his voice vibrating with the power of the Saint he had just consumed. "I need to open the Void. I cannot block the sun, so I will swallow it."

"The Void?" Selene whispered. "Lucian, if you open a gateway to the Void without a physical anchor, you will be erased along with the spell."

"Then be my anchor," Lucian said, reaching out his hands.

The three women took their positions. Shizuka to the east, her blade acting as a lightning rod for the physical world. Aria to the west, her shadows forming the boundary of the ritual. Selene to the north, her fading light providing the necessary frequency to interact with the incoming solar pulse.

As the ritual began, the sky reached its breaking point. The giant glyph in the heavens flared with a blinding, incandescent white. A pillar of solar fire, miles wide, began to descend toward Albion. It moved with a slow, terrifying majesty, vaporizing the moisture in the air before it even struck. The mountains beneath the pass began to glow red-hot.

"Now!" Lucian roared.

He threw his head back, his eyes turning into twin black holes. He didn't push his mana outward; he imploded it. He used the Sovereign's Decay not on the soldiers, but on the fabric of reality itself. A rift of absolute nothingness began to open above him—a tear in the world that led to the Void, the primordial space where even light goes to die.

The pillar of solar fire struck the rift.

The sound was not an explosion, but a scream of physics being violated. The white fire was sucked into the black rift, spiraling down like water into a drain. The sheer pressure of the energy transfer forced Lucian to his knees. His skin began to crack, the obsidian-gold mana leaking out of his pores.

"Hold the line!" Shizuka screamed, her feet digging into the stone. Her armor was melting, the heat from the solar fire radiating even through the rift's suction.

Aria was barely visible now, her body becoming a literal shadow that stretched across the pass, straining to keep the rift open. "Master... I can't... much longer..."

Selene's wings were burning, her feathers turning to ash as she filtered the raw divine energy of the Primeval Sun. "Lucian! Take it! You must absorb the core of the Seal! It's the only way to close the gate!"

Lucian reached up with his spirit. He didn't just want to block the spell; he wanted to own it. He saw the "Heart" of the Final Judgment—a crystalline sphere of pure, concentrated solar divinity at the center of the pillar. He reached into the fire, his hands charring, and grabbed the heart.

[INTEGRATING... 10%... 40%... 80%...]

The sky suddenly turned from crimson to a deathly, static gray. The pillar of fire vanished, sucked entirely into Lucian's core. The rift closed with a thunderous clap that sent a shockwave across the entire continent, shattering every piece of glass in a thousand-mile radius.

Silence fell over the Iron Pass.

Lucian lay flat on the ground, his body steaming. His tunic was gone, his chest covered in intricate, glowing runes of black and white that pulsated like a heartbeat. He was no longer Rank S+. He had stepped into a territory that the System couldn't even name.

"Lucian?" Shizuka crawled toward him, her hands burnt, her violet eyes filled with tears.

Aria and Selene collapsed beside them, their mana completely exhausted. They looked up at the sky. The red haze was gone, replaced by a strange, pale twilight. The sun was visible again, but it looked dim, as if its very essence had been dimmed by the encounter.

Lucian's eyes flickered open. They were no longer black or gold. They were a shifting, iridescent void.

"The Pope..." Lucian whispered, his voice sounding like it was coming from a vast distance. "He felt it. He knows he failed."

[LEVEL UP! LEVEL 65]

[NEW FORM UNLOCKED: THE VOID MONARCH]

[TRAIT: SUN-EATER (Immunity to Holy Fire, Ability to siphon Divine Mana)]

"We survived," Selene breathed, looking at her tattered wings. "But at what cost? You've swallowed the Vatican's greatest weapon, Lucian. You are now the greatest heresy in the history of the world. They won't just send armies now. They will send the Elders."

"Let them," Lucian said, slowly pushing himself up. Despite his injuries, his movements were fluid, possessed of a terrifying power. "I've seen the source of their 'Light'. It's just energy. And energy can be eaten."

He looked toward the north. Far across the oceans, in the heart of the Holy City, the Pope sat on his throne, trembling as he looked at a cracked crystal orb. The Seventh Seal had been stolen. The foundation of his power was leaking.

"Shizuka," Lucian said, looking at the warrior who had anchored his soul. "Take the survivors of the Hoshi Guard. We aren't defending the border anymore."

"What are we doing, Master?" Aria asked, her form slowly stabilizing.

Lucian looked at the pale sun. "We are going to the Holy City. I don't want to wait for the next Judgment. I want to meet the one who judges."
