Chapter 6 - The First Encounter

Lin Chen reached the central commercial district at 8:55 a.m. The morning sun had risen high enough to cast sharp shadows across the sidewalks. The air carried a mixture of exhaust fumes, frying oil from street carts, and the faint metallic scent of recent rain. Pedestrians moved in steady streams: office workers in pressed shirts carrying briefcases, students with backpacks slung over one shoulder, elderly residents pushing carts filled with vegetables. He maintained his usual position on the right side of the walkway, steps measured to avoid jarring the still-healing ribs.

The shopping arcade entrance lay ahead, its glass doors reflecting the passing crowd. Near the main doors a small group of fifteen to twenty people had formed a loose semicircle. Voices rose in sharp tones. Lin Chen slowed his pace and positioned himself at the outer perimeter of the gathering, approximately ten meters from the center. The distance allowed clear observation without drawing notice.

Two men stood at the focal point. The first wore a faded blue delivery uniform identical in cut and color to the one Lin Chen had worn for the past three years. His helmet rested on the ground beside him, cracked at one edge. The second man was a private security guard employed by the arcade management. He wore a dark gray uniform with reflective strips on the sleeves, a baton clipped to his belt, and a name tag reading "Security – Wang." The guard held the delivery rider's phone in his left hand while gesturing with his right.

The argument centered on a damaged display case inside one of the ground-floor shops. The guard claimed the rider had knocked it over while rushing through the corridor. The rider maintained that the case was already cracked when he arrived to drop off an order and that he had reported the condition to the shop clerk before leaving. The guard demanded 800 yuan for repairs. The rider offered 200 yuan as a goodwill gesture but refused the full amount.

The exchange escalated. The guard raised his voice, accusing the rider of lying to avoid responsibility. The rider responded by stepping forward half a pace, shoulders squared, index finger pointing toward the guard's chest without touching. The guard responded by shoving the rider's left shoulder with an open palm. The force pushed the rider back two steps; his heel caught the edge of the curb, causing a brief stumble before he regained balance.

Lin Chen observed the guard's entire posture during the push. Feet planted shoulder-width apart, knees slightly bent, weight shifted forward onto the balls of the feet, right hand clenched into a fist at hip level, elbow tucked close to the body, shoulders rolled forward in preparation for follow-through. The stance aligned with standard security training protocols for crowd control and restraint: balanced base for stability, forward lean to project authority, fist position ready for immediate transition to a grab or strike.

The panel materialized in the lower portion of his field of vision, text crisp and unblinking.

[Acquired: Basic Security Restraint Stance (Combat Proficiency Level 1)]

[Effect: You now possess the exact foot placement, knee flexion angle, weight distribution ratio (60% forward), fist clench tension, elbow tuck position, and shoulder forward roll required to initiate a standard arm-bar, wrist lock, or shoulder-control maneuver from standing range. Full application restricted by current clavicle fracture and rib contusion; maximum force output estimated at 35% of observed demonstration.]

The panel vanished as quickly as it had appeared. The knowledge integrated seamlessly into his mental map—no disorientation, no surge of energy, simply an additional layer of precise recall. Lin Chen could now visualize the transition from the observed stance to a basic wrist grab: step forward with the left foot, secure the opponent's right wrist with the left hand, rotate the body clockwise while applying downward pressure, then use the right arm to reinforce the lock.

The argument continued for another ninety seconds. The rider, face flushed, pulled out his wallet and counted out 300 yuan in small notes. He handed the money over with visible reluctance. The guard accepted it, pocketed the cash without counting, and returned the phone. The rider retrieved his helmet, turned, and walked away quickly toward the street. The crowd dispersed within thirty seconds, individuals returning to their previous paths without comment.

Lin Chen waited until the area cleared before resuming his walk. He did not linger or approach either party. The encounter had lasted under three minutes from initial observation to resolution. The new restraint stance joined the existing list of acquired techniques without prompting any immediate need for physical rehearsal.

He continued along the main boulevard. The district pulsed with activity: vendors calling out prices for fresh lychees and mangoes, delivery riders weaving between pedestrians, shop assistants sweeping entrances. Near a corner intersection a fitness center had opened its street-facing glass doors, allowing morning air into the lobby. A trainer in athletic wear led a group of twelve participants through kettlebell swings on rubber mats placed outside. The trainer demonstrated the movement first: feet hip-width, slight knee bend, kettlebell gripped with both hands, hip hinge backward to swing the weight between the legs, then explosive hip extension forward to propel the kettlebell to chest height, arms remaining straight, core braced throughout.

Lin Chen observed the full repetition cycle from the sidewalk. The hip hinge depth measured approximately 45 degrees from vertical, posterior chain activation dominant, swing path following a precise pendulum arc, shoulders packed downward to maintain neutral spine, breathing pattern synchronized with the movement—sharp exhale on the upward swing, controlled inhale on the descent.

[Acquired: Basic Kettlebell Swing Mechanics (Strength Proficiency Level 1)]

[Effect: You now possess the exact hip hinge angle, posterior chain firing sequence, swing trajectory radius, shoulder packing tension, core bracing pattern, and breathing coordination of the demonstrated technique. Execution currently restricted by rib injury and absence of equipment; estimated safe load zero until fracture healing completes.]

He moved on without stopping. The technique stored itself as another complete reference point.

By 10:15 a.m. he reached the familiar shaded bench near the convenience store. The bench, concrete with wooden slats, provided adequate back support. He sat carefully, injured arm resting across his lap, and remained there for twenty-two minutes. During this period he mentally cataloged the updated list:

----------------------------------

- Medical: Intravenous Adjustment

- Combat: Straight Punch Form, Side Kick Sequence, Tai Chi Push Hands (First Section), Wing Chun Chain Punch, Security Restraint Stance

- Strength: Kettlebell Swing Mechanics

- Gymnastic: Handstand Entry and Hold

- Culinary: Fruit Slicing Technique

- Parkour: Kong Vault

----------------------------------

Nine techniques in total. Proficiency levels ranged from 1 to 2. Utilization remained theoretical; physical testing waited for medical clearance.

At 10:45 a.m. he stood and began the return journey. The walk back required forty minutes at a reduced pace to conserve energy. Midway along the route, near a narrow alley branching off the main road, he passed four young men in casual clothing—hoodies, jeans, sneakers. They stood clustered near the alley mouth, cigarettes in hand, conversation low.

The apparent leader—a man in his early twenties with short hair and a thin scar above his left eyebrow—noticed Lin Chen's sling and deliberate gait. He stepped directly into Lin Chen's path, blocking the sidewalk. The other three shifted positions subtly, forming a loose semicircle that limited escape routes without overt aggression.

"You look injured," the leader said. His tone carried mock concern. "Need help with anything? Directions? Money?"

Lin Chen stopped three meters away. He assessed the formation: leader centered, two flanks, one rear guard. Hands visible but relaxed, no visible weapons, posture relaxed yet ready—weight on the balls of the feet, shoulders loose, eyes scanning for reaction.

The leader continued. "This alley has a toll for passing through. Small fee. You understand."

Lin Chen kept his expression neutral. "I am not passing through the alley. I am continuing straight."

The leader smirked. "Still counts. Cash or phone. Your choice."

Lin Chen exhaled slowly through the nose. He did not raise his voice or alter his posture. "I have no money to give and no interest in giving what I do have."

The leader took one step forward, closing the distance to two meters. "Then we take what's there."

Lin Chen held eye contact. He observed the leader's updated stance: feet spread wider than before, right fist clenched at hip level, left hand open and raised slightly—identical to the security guard's earlier posture but with added forward aggression.

The knowledge settled instantly. Lin Chen did not attempt to mirror the stance or escalate. Instead, he stepped sideways to his right, keeping his injured arm protected against his body, and walked past the group along the open sidewalk. The men laughed—short, forced sounds—but did not follow or grab at him. The encounter concluded in twenty-eight seconds.

He completed the remaining distance to the apartment building without further interruption. He climbed the stairs, paused once on the third-floor landing to allow the ribs to settle, then entered the room and locked the door. He sat on the bed and reviewed the two new acquisitions: the restraint stance and the intimidation stance. Both low-level, both rooted in control and projection rather than raw power.
