Chapter 42 - Chapter 42: Shikaku: The Man Who Doesn't Want to Go Home

The core personnel for the Public Security Division, such as the Director, Deputy Directors, and the three Squad Captains, were determined directly during the meeting.

Akimichi Takeo was appointed as the Director of the Public Security Division. One Deputy Director was Nara Sado, responsible for investigations, and the other was Yamanaka Yatsuko, responsible for the archives and data department... The other three security and operations squads were under the direct command of Akimichi Takeo, with the Captains being Fujita Taichi, Abiko Bixin, and Yamanaka Yugito, respectively responsible for Konoha's public security incidents, Ninja-related incidents, as well as criminal investigation and interrogation.

One Deputy Director and one Squad Captain—the Yamanaka Clan had secured a total of two spots. It could be said to be a massive harvest!

The work of the archives and data department might not seem that important, but it was like the core of a personnel network—

In terms of clan interests, the implicit benefits contained within were far greater than other tasks.

As for criminal investigation and interrogation, it was a perfect match for their expertise, providing the Yamanaka Clan with an opportunity to legitimately possess a combat unit with violent functions—one cannot underestimate a squad of over twenty people; for a Ninja village, this was actually a significant force: how many registered Ninjas does a village even have?

The current living Ninjas in Konoha, including all registered Ninjas such as Jonin, Chunin, and Genin, numbered roughly six hundred.

Actually, the number of 'registered Ninjas' is easy to calculate. A Ninja's registration number is their unique ID, starting from 1 and continuing sequentially... As of now, since the village's founding and the start of record-keeping, the numbers have reached over 12,200—but once you filter out the massive amount of cannon fodder who graduated hastily during the three Great Ninja Wars and were issued registration numbers, this is the only number left. Among those 12,000-plus people, at least 10,000 were students from the Ninja Academy who, due to special circumstances during wartime, were sent to the battlefield the moment they were issued a Kunai.

The fate of these people can be imagined; under the cruelty of war, they lacked the strength and qualifications to survive.

And those with good luck were destined to be a tiny minority... A squad of over twenty people is truly impressive. After all, the Anbu directly under the Hokage, even including the Root within the Anbu, only numbered around a hundred people—they simply couldn't muster a larger scale than that.

Afterward, Hiruzen Sarutobi specifically kept Inoichi Yamanaka, Shikaku Nara, and Choza Akimichi behind to encourage the friendship between the three clans.

As well as the friendship between the three clans and the Sarutobi Clan.

"Since the Warring States period, the Ino-Shika-Cho have advanced and retreated together; through long battles, you have developed bonds that transcend the ordinary. Sarutobi is the witness to your friendship—I believe that in the future, your friendship will endure, and Sarutobi will remain the best friend of your three clans, continuing to witness your bond as always."

Changing the subject, he turned to the Public Security Division... "Regarding the Public Security Division, you should look out for it... Takeo and the others will surely encounter significant trouble when they start their work..."

"Yes, Hokage-sama. We will help them carry out their work effectively."

After talking for a while, the Ino-Shika-Cho trio took their leave, and the Hokage once again immersed himself in his busy work.

Leaving the Hokage Building, Shikaku Nara put his arm around Inoichi Yamanaka's shoulder, restraining him: "The three of us haven't had a drink together for a while... How about a drink? Especially you, Inoichi—I invited you several times before, and you always slipped away. That's no way to be a daughter-obsessed father, haha..."

Inoichi Yamanaka suggested: "Then, why not go to my house? My wife has learned a few new dishes, and the taste is quite good..."

"That won't do, that won't do... If we eat at your house, won't my old lady find out later? Sigh, I can't afford to provoke her!"

Among the three, Shikaku Nara was the one who least wanted to go home early—it was simply because his wife was too fierce, keeping both father and son in line. Sometimes when he reached the clan's street, he would walk back and forth a few times and have a smoke before entering his home. This formed a sharp contrast with the other two who were eager to get home.

Choza Akimichi was originally quite tempted by Inoichi Yamanaka's suggestion... not for any new dishes, but simply because he felt eating at home saved money... Hmmm, but upon hearing Shikaku Nara's reasoning, he considerately sided with Shikaku Nara.

"How about we just eat out. It's really not convenient at home; we're all people with children now, and drinking in front of the kids isn't good..."

"Right, right, right... Choza is right, let's go eat yakiniku, my treat today." Shikaku Nara quickly caught onto Choza Akimichi's words.

Inoichi Yamanaka tilted his head and glanced at Shikaku Nara, curling his lip without saying a word... Everyone knew exactly how much of a henpecked husband this guy was.

Inoichi Yamanaka asked: "Wait, do you have enough money? Don't let it be a case where your pockets are cleaner than your face when it's time to pay, leaving me and Choza to settle the bill."

"How can you slander a man's innocence out of thin air?" Shikaku Nara retorted weakly, "I said it's my treat—what does it matter whose money is spent?"

...Inoichi Yamanaka stopped exposing Shikaku Nara's secrets and turned to ask Choza Akimichi: "You have enough money, right?"

"Eat as much as you want!"

Choza Akimichi indicated that he had plenty of money.

The three went to the Yakiniku Bar, sat down at a table in the main hall, and ordered grilled meat and sake, eating and drinking away.

They continued until midnight before heading home, reeking of alcohol. When Inoichi Yamanaka returned home, Ino was already asleep—this was both Mrs. Yamanaka's requirement and Ino's own persistence. Only by sleeping early and waking early could one have a healthy body; especially after studying the relationship between the meridians and Chakra, she paid even more attention to 'the balance of movement and stillness, in harmony with the four seasons.' Starting health preservation at such a young age, making the circulation of the meridians correspond to the twelve time periods, and achieving harmony between herself and nature—whether it was said to be good for growth or good for the skin, in short, it was beneficial.

Mrs. Yamanaka, however, had been waiting for Inoichi Yamanaka. Upon seeing him, she complained: "Why did you go drinking with Shikaku again?"

When mentioning Shikaku Nara, just like any wife dissatisfied with her husband's drinking buddies, Mrs. Yamanaka was very displeased with Shikaku Nara's habit of dragging her husband out to drink at every opportunity, often for half the night.

Inoichi Yamanaka said: "I only drank a little bit, it was mostly just chatting... After all, it's been a while since Shikaku and I had a drink together."

"Go take a shower—don't come into my room with that smell of alcohol on you. Sleep in the study!"

"Oh, honey, you can't be like this... you'll lose me." Inoichi Yamanaka self-taught himself to act spoiled like his own daughter, causing Mrs. Yamanaka to roll her eyes hard. "Go, go, go, hurry up and shower. I'll give you half an hour, or I'm locking the door."

"Understood!"

Inoichi Yamanaka formed a sword-finger hand seal with one hand; this was a hand seal used by Ninjas when accepting an order from a superior or saluting a superior.

Then, he scurried off to shower.
