Chapter 43 - Chapter 43: Echoes

The restaurant was loud.

Not chaotic—just the normal kind of noise that filled a place when people were relaxed. Plates clinked, conversations overlapped, and the smell of grilled food drifted through the air.

Rey sat across from Claire in a booth near the window, staring down at the enormous plate that had just been placed in front of him.

Claire raised an eyebrow.

"You ordered enough food for three people."

Rey picked up his fork.

"I nearly died."

"You already used that excuse."

"It's still valid."

Claire rolled her eyes but smiled slightly.

For a while, they ate in comfortable silence. Rey hadn't realized how hungry he actually was until the first bite. Hospital food had been… questionable.

"This is the best meal I've had in weeks," he said.

"That's because it's actual food."

Rey leaned back after finishing half the plate.

For the first time in a long while, his mind felt calm.

No pressure.

No whispers.

Just ordinary thoughts.

It was strange how peaceful that felt.

Claire sipped her drink and watched him.

"You look different."

Rey frowned.

"…Different how?"

"Lighter," she said.

"Like you're not carrying a hundred bricks in your brain."

Rey laughed quietly.

"That's probably accurate."

Claire tilted her head slightly.

"So what are you going to do now?"

Rey shrugged.

"Sleep for a week."

"Besides that."

He thought for a moment.

"Go back to school."

Claire nearly choked on her drink.

"You're joking."

"Nope."

"You fought an ancient shadow entity and your first idea is homework?"

Rey pointed his fork at her.

"I've missed like two months of classes."

"That sounds like a blessing."

"It sounds like academic disaster."

Claire shook her head.

"You are unbelievably boring."

Rey grinned.

"You say that like it's a bad thing."

For a moment Claire didn't respond.

Then she said quietly, "After everything we've been through… boring sounds nice."

Rey nodded.

"Yeah."

Outside the window the sky had turned dark.

Streetlights reflected off the glass.

People passed by on the sidewalk.

Everything looked normal.

Rey suddenly paused.

His fork stopped halfway to his mouth.

Claire noticed immediately.

"What?"

Rey frowned slightly.

"…Nothing."

"You froze."

"I thought I heard something."

Claire looked around the restaurant.

"Like what?"

Rey shook his head.

"I don't know."

He listened again.

Nothing.

Just voices and music from the speakers.

Maybe he was imagining things.

"You're still adjusting," Claire said.

"After something like that your brain probably expects danger everywhere."

Rey nodded slowly.

"Yeah. Probably."

But something still felt… strange.

Not wrong.

Just unfamiliar.

He rubbed his arm absentmindedly.

Right over the mark.

A faint warmth pulsed under his skin.

Rey's expression changed slightly.

Claire noticed.

"What is it now?"

Rey rolled his sleeve up a little.

The mark looked the same as before.

Faded.

Still.

But his arm felt warm.

Like a tiny spark had flickered under the surface.

"It's probably nothing," he said.

Claire leaned closer to look.

"It doesn't look different."

Rey lowered his sleeve again.

"Yeah."

He forced a small smile.

"Probably just my imagination."

Claire studied him for another second before leaning back.

"If anything weird happens," she said, "you tell me immediately."

"Yes, mom."

Claire threw a napkin at him.

Later that night Rey walked home alone.

The streets were quieter now.

Most shops had closed, and only a few cars passed by occasionally.

The cool night air felt refreshing after the warm restaurant.

Rey shoved his hands in his pockets as he walked.

His body still felt tired, but in a good way.

The kind of tired that came after a long day instead of a long battle.

He reached the small park near his house and slowed down.

Streetlights cast long shadows across the empty paths.

For a moment Rey just stood there.

Listening.

The wind rustled through the trees.

Leaves shifted softly.

Peaceful.

He took a deep breath.

Then—

A whisper.

Rey froze.

"…Hello?"

The word was so quiet it almost didn't exist.

Rey's heart jumped.

He turned quickly.

No one was there.

The park was empty.

Just trees and the dim glow of the lamps.

"…Hello?" the voice repeated.

Rey's stomach tightened.

That voice.

It wasn't the shadow.

It sounded… younger.

Confused.

Like someone waking up from a long sleep.

Rey's arm suddenly burned.

He grabbed his sleeve and pulled it up.

The mark was glowing.

Not dark like before.

Soft.

Silver.

Pulsing faintly with light.

Rey stared at it in shock.

"…What?"

The whisper came again.

Clearer this time.

"Where… am I?"

Rey's breathing slowed.

The voice wasn't threatening.

It sounded lost.

Almost… frightened.

He looked down at the glowing mark.

"…You're kidding me," he murmured.

The light pulsed again.

And the voice whispered softly inside his mind.

"…Are you… the one who saved me?"

Rey stood alone in the quiet park.

Staring at the mark on his arm.

Realizing something he had never expected.

The shadow was gone.

But something else…

Had survived.
