Chapter 45 - Chapter 45: The Trigger

Rey pushed open the door to his house quietly.

The hallway was dark, lit only by the faint glow of a streetlight through the window. Everything was silent.

Normal.

For the first time in months, nothing felt like it was waiting to attack him.

He stepped inside and closed the door behind him.

"…Is this home?"

Rey blinked.

Right.

The voice.

"Yeah," he whispered. "This is home."

The mark on his arm glowed faintly beneath his sleeve.

He walked into the kitchen and flipped on the light.

The sudden brightness made him squint.

"…Bright," the voice murmured.

Rey laughed quietly.

"You'll get used to it."

He grabbed a glass and filled it with water.

"So," Rey said, leaning against the counter, "we need to figure out what to call you."

The glow pulsed softly.

"…Call me?"

"Yeah."

Rey took a sip.

"You can't just be 'mysterious voice living in my arm.'"

The voice hesitated.

"…I don't remember having a name."

Rey nodded slowly.

"That's what I thought."

He thought for a moment.

"Well… the shadow was darkness."

The glow flickered.

"But you're different."

"…Different how?"

Rey looked down at the mark.

"It feels like light."

The mark pulsed slightly brighter.

Rey snapped his fingers.

"What about Luma?"

Silence.

Then the glow warmed slightly.

"…Luma."

The voice repeated it carefully.

"…I like that."

Rey smiled.

"Alright then."

He raised his glass slightly.

"Nice to meet you, Luma."

A few minutes later Rey collapsed onto the couch.

His body still felt heavy from the hospital recovery.

Luma spoke again.

"…Rey?"

"Yeah?"

"…Where did I come from?"

Rey stared at the ceiling.

"That's… complicated."

He rubbed his arm.

"You probably came from the same place the shadow did."

The glow dimmed slightly.

"…That sounds bad."

"Yeah," Rey said honestly. "It usually is."

He sat up.

"But you're not like it."

Before Luma could respond—

The mark suddenly flared.

Bright.

Silver light spread across Rey's arm.

"Whoa—"

The room vanished.

Rey stood somewhere else

Cold air rushed across his skin.

Stone walls surrounded him.

Dim lights flickered overhead.

The facility.

But it looked different.

Not ruined.

Not collapsed.

New.

Machines hummed quietly.

Rey looked around in shock.

"…What?"

Then he heard a voice.

A man's voice.

Familiar.

Warm.

Tired.

"Well… if you're seeing this, then the trigger worked."

Rey's heart skipped.

"…Dad?"

A figure stood beside a metal console across the room.

Not fully real.

Like a recording made of light.

Rey's father.

Older than Rey remembered.

Dark circles under his eyes.

But smiling slightly.

"If you're watching this, Rey," his father continued, "it means the remainder finally activated."

Rey stepped forward.

"You… you knew?"

The recording continued as if it could hear him.

"The mark wasn't supposed to be just a weapon."

Rey froze.

"I built it to split the shadow."

The machines around the room hummed louder in the memory.

"Long ago we discovered the entity buried beneath this facility," his father said.

"Not a creature exactly. More like… living energy."

The lights flickered.

"It could attach to a human mind and slowly take control."

Rey clenched his fists.

"The shadow."

His father nodded in the recording.

"I realized we couldn't destroy it directly."

"So I created a counterforce."

He tapped a glowing container beside him.

Inside it, a faint silver light moved.

Small.

Gentle.

"This," his father said quietly, "is the remainder of its opposite."

Rey's eyes widened.

Luma whispered in his mind.

"…That's me."

His father continued speaking.

"The shadow grows through domination."

"But this… grows through connection."

Rey felt the mark warm again.

"I designed the trigger so that if the shadow ever bonded to someone…"

His father looked directly toward the camera.

"…the remainder would activate and split the entity apart."

Rey's breath slowed.

"So that's what happened."

The shadow hadn't just been destroyed.

It had been torn in half.

His father sighed in the recording.

"I hoped I'd never have to use this on my own son."

Rey's chest tightened.

"But if you're seeing this… then the worst happened."

The older man smiled sadly.

"Rey… I'm sorry."

Silence filled the memory.

Then his father continued.

"The good news is the remainder is harmless."

The silver light inside the container pulsed gently.

"It won't control you."

"It won't possess you."

"It will only survive by forming a bond."

Rey slowly looked down at his glowing arm.

Luma spoke softly.

"…Bond."

His father's voice softened.

"So if you're hearing another voice now… don't be afraid."

Rey felt something warm spread across his chest.

"She's not the shadow."

Rey blinked.

"She?"

His father chuckled lightly.

"I never gave the remainder a personality, but if it developed one…"

He shrugged.

"…it'll probably be kinder than anything I ever built."

The recording began to flicker.

"Take care of her, Rey."

"And maybe… she'll take care of you."

The image started fading.

"One more thing."

His father's voice lowered slightly.

"The shadow was never alone."

Rey's stomach tightened.

"There were others like it."

The recording glitched.

"They're still buried."

The memory shattered.

Rey gasped.

The living room snapped back into place.

He was still on the couch.

Breathing heavily.

The mark glowed softly again.

"…Did you see that?" Rey whispered.

"…Yes," Luma said quietly.

Her voice sounded different now.

Calmer.

Like she understood something new.

"…Your father saved us."

Rey rubbed his face.

"Yeah."

Then he froze.

"…Wait."

He looked down at the mark.

"Did he say others?"

The glow pulsed slowly.

"…Yes."

Rey leaned back into the couch.

For a few moments neither of them spoke.

Finally Rey sighed.

"Well."

"That's… not great."

Luma asked gently:

"…Are you scared?"

Rey thought for a moment.

Then he shook his head.

"No."

He looked down at the mark.

"I'm not alone anymore."

The glow warmed slightly.

And somewhere far beneath the destroyed facility…

Deep below the broken chamber…

Something ancient stirred again.

Not the shadow.

But something that had been sleeping much longer
