Emma looked at the invitation for a long time. It had been one year since ninety-seven countries started using the standards she helped build. The Global Survivor Coalition was holding a huge conference in Geneva. Maya wanted Emma to give the opening speech.
"Before you say no, just listen," Maya said over the phone. "This is not about coming back to lead us. It is about a celebration. You would talk for twenty minutes and tell your story. Then you can just spend three days meeting people who are doing the work you started. That is it."
Emma wanted to say no right away. She had spent the last six months building a quiet life. She had set hard boundaries. She did not want to go back to that world of stress and cameras. But something about this felt different. It was an invitation to see the actual results.
"Can I bring my family?" Emma asked.
Maya sounded surprised. "Your family?"
