Chapter 13 - Second Blood

Rin's second match was scheduled for early evening, giving him three hours to recover. He found a quiet corner beneath the stands, away from the crowds and noise.

The containment bracelet felt heavier with each passing hour. Through their bond, he could sense Malachar's restlessness.

"The seal is suffocating," the demon lord complained. "Like trying to breathe through wet cloth."

"It's keeping the corruption from spreading."

"Is it? Or is it just delaying the inevitable?" Malachar's tone sharpened. "You won that first match, but barely. Garrett had you on the defensive until I manifested. Against a stronger opponent, those few seconds of vulnerability could be fatal."

"What are you suggesting?"

"Remove the bracelet. Fight at full strength."

"And accelerate the corruption? No." Rin touched the bandages on his arm. "Professor Corvin said another major manifestation could push me past fifty percent. I won't risk it."

"Then you'd better hope your next opponent is weak."

They weren't.

When Rin's match was called, he walked to Combat Circle Three to find his opponent already waiting. A girl with shoulder length auburn hair and calculating gray eyes. She wore the uniform of a second year student, and her posture radiated confidence.

"Lyanna Ashford," she introduced herself. "Silver rank twenty eight. I've been watching your matches with interest."

"Ashford?" Rin frowned. "Like Professor Ashford from Dimensional Theory?"

"My aunt." Lyanna smiled slightly. "She's told me fascinating things about you and your bond. I'm curious to see if the reality matches the rumors."

The referee raised his hand. "Standard tournament rules apply. Summon when ready!"

Lyanna activated her mark without hesitation. Space rippled around her, and a creature emerged that made Rin's breath catch. It looked like a large cat, but its fur seemed to be made of shifting starlight. Its eyes were galaxies in miniature, and when it moved, it left trails of cosmic energy.

"A Stellar Lynx," Malachar identified. "Rare. Very rare. Space-time affinity."

"What does that mean?"

"It means this fight just became significantly more dangerous."

The Stellar Lynx vanished.

Not invisible. Not hidden. It simply ceased to exist in that location and reappeared behind Rin in the same instant. Claws raked across his back before he could react.

"First hit!"

Rin stumbled forward, pain burning across his shoulders. He tried to summon Malachar, but the lynx attacked again, appearing and disappearing in rapid succession. Each strike was precise, calculated to disrupt his concentration.

"She's using spatial displacement," Malachar explained urgently. "The lynx is teleporting short distances. You can't predict where it will appear next."

"How do I fight something that can be anywhere?"

"You don't. You force it to come to you."

Rin focused through the pain and manifested Malachar fully. The demon lord appeared in a defensive stance, his sword ready.

The Stellar Lynx circled them, moving through space in disconnected jumps. Here, then there, then somewhere else entirely. Its movements created a disorienting pattern that made it impossible to track.

Lyanna watched calmly from the edge of the circle. "Your demon is powerful, but power means nothing if you can't hit your target."

She was right. Malachar swung at where the lynx appeared, but it was gone before his blade connected. The creature struck from impossible angles, its claws leaving shallow cuts that accumulated damage.

"Second hit! Third hit!"

"This isn't working," Rin thought desperately. "We need a different strategy."

"The lynx can teleport anywhere within the combat circle," Malachar observed. "But it still needs to manifest physically to attack. That's the opening."

"It's too fast."

"For normal reactions, yes. But we're not using normal reactions." Malachar's presence pressed against Rin's consciousness through their bond. "Let me guide your perception. See through my eyes."

Rin hesitated. Sharing senses meant deepening their connection, potentially accelerating the corruption. But without a new approach, he'd lose this match.

"Do it," he decided.

The world shifted. Suddenly Rin could see with demonic clarity. Time seemed to slow as Malachar's centuries of combat experience filtered his perception. The lynx's movements became less chaotic, more predictable. He could see the micro-expressions in its muscles before it teleported, the way space rippled an instant before it reappeared.

"There," Malachar whispered.

The lynx materialized behind them for another strike. But this time, Malachar was already turning, his sword arcing through the space where the creature would be. The blade connected, sending the lynx tumbling.

"Fourth hit!"

Lyanna's eyes widened slightly. "Impressive adaptation."

The Stellar Lynx recovered and changed tactics. Instead of rapid short jumps, it teleported to the far edge of the circle and began channeling energy. Stars appeared around it, each one pulsing with concentrated power.

"Stellar Barrage," Malachar identified. "Ranged attack. Clever."

The stars launched simultaneously, each one a miniature comet streaking toward them. Malachar raised his sword and unleashed a wave of crimson energy that intercepted the projectiles. Explosions lit up the combat circle.

Through the smoke and light, the lynx teleported into striking range again. But Rin was ready. With Malachar's enhanced perception, he saw it coming and directed the demon lord's counter perfectly.

Malachar's fist caught the lynx mid-pounce, slamming it into the ground.

"Fifth hit! Match concluded! Winner: Rin Eldraven!"

The crowd roared. Rin dismissed Malachar and immediately felt the exhaustion hit him. Sharing perception had drained him more than expected.

Lyanna recalled her Stellar Lynx and approached. "You adapted mid-battle. That's the mark of a true summoner, not just someone with a powerful bond." She extended her hand. "Well fought."

Rin shook it, surprised by the genuine respect in her gesture.

"Your corruption marks spread during that fight," she said quietly, so only he could hear. "Your neck has new patterns. Be careful, Rin Eldraven. Power always demands payment."

She walked away, leaving Rin to process her words.

He touched his neck and felt new raised lines beneath his fingers. The corruption had spread despite the containment bracelet.

In the stands, Professor Corvin watched with a troubled expression. Beside her, Headmaster Silvanus leaned forward.

"The boy is advancing through the tournament," Silvanus observed. "But at what cost?"

"If he continues at this rate, he'll reach critical corruption levels before the finals," Corvin replied. "We may need to withdraw him."

"And if we do, the bond strain could kill him." Silvanus's jaw tightened. "We're trapped between two bad options."

"There might be a third option," Corvin said slowly. "But it would require accessing restricted archives. Information the academy has kept sealed for good reason."

"Information about Nexus bonds?"

"Information about the last student who formed one. Fifteen years ago."

Silvanus went very still. "You know we agreed never to speak of that incident."

"Cyrus Blackthorn faced the same corruption. If his research notes still exist..." Corvin met the headmaster's eyes. "They might contain answers that could save Rin's life."

In the shadows beneath the stands, Shade's scrying orb flickered. The masked figure watched this conversation with intense focus.

"So they do remember," Shade whispered. "And they kept my research. Interesting."

He dismissed the orb and melted into darkness, already planning his next move.

The tournament would continue tomorrow with the quarterfinals.

But the real games were just beginning.
