Chapter 21 - What Remains

Rin woke three days later.

The medical wing was quiet, afternoon sunlight streaming through windows that had been repaired since the finals. His body felt strange, like wearing clothes that didn't quite fit. Everything was sharper: colors more vivid, sounds clearer, even the texture of the sheets against his skin was intense.

"You're awake," Professor Corvin's voice came from beside his bed. She looked exhausted, dark circles under her eyes. "How do you feel?"

"Different." Rin sat up slowly. His right arm was completely black with corruption marks now, the geometric patterns intricate and beautiful in a disturbing way. "How long was I unconscious?"

"Three days. Your body was adapting to the merger, recalibrating neural pathways, rewriting portions of your physiology." She held up a medical scanner. "May I?"

Rin nodded. The device hummed as it passed over him, displaying readings that made Corvin's expression shift between fascination and concern.

"Fifty-two point three percent corruption," she announced. "Remarkably, it hasn't spread further since the match. You've stabilized at just above the threshold."

"Is that good?"

"It's unprecedented. Every theoretical model predicted you'd either die, go insane, or continue corrupting until you became fully demonic." She set down the scanner. "Instead, you've achieved equilibrium. You and Malachar have merged, but both identities remain distinct."

"Can I still summon him?"

"Let's find out. Try to manifest him, but keep it minimal. Just his voice or a partial form."

Rin focused on the bond. It felt different now, less like reaching for something external and more like accessing a part of himself. "Malachar?"

"Here," the demon lord's voice echoed, but it came from inside Rin's head and from his own mouth simultaneously. "Strange sensation, isn't it? Being both separate and together."

"How are you feeling?" Rin asked.

"Uncomfortable. Your emotions keep bleeding into me. I felt concern for that girl Kira yesterday. Concern! For a human I barely know!" Malachar's tone was both annoyed and amused. "This merger is making me soft."

"Or making you remember what it's like to care about people."

"Same thing."

Professor Corvin watched this internal dialogue with clinical interest. "Can you manifest physically?"

Rin tried. His shadow rippled, and Malachar's form began to emerge, but it was different. The demon lord looked more human now, his features less harsh, his armor incorporating elements that matched Rin's corruption patterns. The merger had changed them both.

"Partial manifestation achieved," Corvin noted. "Mana consumption is actually lower than before. The merger made your bond more efficient."

A knock at the door. Kira burst in, saw Rin was awake, and practically tackled him with a hug.

"You idiot! You magnificent, terrifying idiot!" She pulled back, examining his face. The corruption marks now formed an asymmetrical pattern, the right side heavily marked while the left remained mostly clear. His right eye glowed faintly crimson even without Malachar manifested. "You look like a villain from a storybook."

"Thanks?"

"It's actually kind of impressive. Scary, but impressive." She pulled out her notebook, already scribbling observations. "The merger happened at exactly fifty percent, creating a stable fusion state. Your corruption patterns suggest integration rather than consumption. This could revolutionize bonding theory!"

"Or get me expelled as a dangerous anomaly," Rin pointed out.

Corvin's expression darkened. "About that. The academy board has called an emergency meeting to discuss your status. Some members want you removed immediately. Others argue you're too valuable to lose. The debate has been... intense."

"When's the meeting?"

"Tomorrow morning. Headmaster Silvanus is advocating for you, but he's facing significant opposition." She hesitated. "There's something else. Your tournament draw means you share the championship title with Elena. Both of you are being elevated to Platinum rank."

"I'm Platinum rank?" Rin's mind reeled. "But I'm barely a month into first year."

"You fought the strongest student in the academy to a standstill. You've earned it." Corvin stood. "Get some rest. Tomorrow will be difficult."

After she left, Kira sat on the edge of the bed. "So, what's it like? Being merged with Malachar?"

"It's like having a roommate in my head who occasionally offers tactical advice and complains about my food choices." Rin smiled slightly. "But also, I can feel his memories now. His experiences. Three centuries of battle knowledge is just... there. Available."

"Can he feel your memories too?"

"Unfortunately, yes," Malachar interjected. "I now know far too much about farming techniques and your embarrassing childhood incidents."

Kira laughed. "This is so weird. But also amazing." Her expression turned serious. "Rin, there's something you should know. While you were unconscious, someone tried to break into your dormitory room. They were looking for something."

"Did they find anything?"

"No. I moved your belongings here for safekeeping." She pulled out a wrapped bundle. "Including this."

She unwrapped Shade's black book.

"You've been reading forbidden research from a mysterious stranger," Kira said flatly. "We need to talk about your decision-making skills."

"I know it was risky, but"

"But nothing. This is dangerous." She flipped through pages. "Though I'll admit, the techniques described are revolutionary. Whoever wrote this understood Nexus bonds better than anyone at the academy."

"Because he experienced it firsthand."

Kira's eyes widened. "Shade is a former Nexus summoner? That explains so much." She closed the book carefully. "What are you going to do? About his offer?"

Before Rin could answer, the purple crystal in his belongings began to glow. Shade's voice whispered directly into his mind.

"Congratulations on surviving the merger, Rin Eldraven. You've done what I couldn't: maintain your humanity past the threshold. I'm impressed." A pause. "The academy board meeting tomorrow will not go well. They fear what you represent. When they move against you, and they will, activate the crystal. I'll be waiting."

The glow faded.

"That was ominous," Kira said. "Please tell me you're not actually considering trusting him."

"I don't trust him. But I might need him." Rin looked at his corrupted hand. "The academy kept Shade's research hidden for fifteen years. They exiled him rather than try to help. What makes me think they'll treat me differently?"

"Because you're not alone. You have friends. Allies." Kira gripped his hand. "Whatever happens tomorrow, we face it together."

That evening, Elena visited. She moved stiffly, still recovering from the finals, but her smile was genuine.

"Shared Platinum rank," she said, sitting carefully. "My father is furious. He wanted me to have sole claim to the title."

"Sorry?"

"Don't be. I earned a draw, not a victory. That's the truth." She studied his corrupted face. "You look different. More dangerous. But your eyes are still kind. That's good."

"Lumiel recovered?"

"Completely. He's actually been unusually quiet since the match. I think fighting Malachar affected him more than he's admitting." Elena leaned forward. "Rin, I heard about the board meeting tomorrow. My family has influence. I can speak on your behalf."

"Why would you do that?"

"Because you proved yourself. And because..." She hesitated. "Because seeing you fight past your limits, refuse to give up despite everything, it reminded me why I became a summoner. Not for rank or prestige, but to push boundaries and discover what's possible."

"Thank you."

"Don't thank me yet. Some board members are powerful and stubborn. This won't be easy." She stood to leave, then paused. "One more thing. There are rumors that someone's been asking questions about you. Someone from outside the academy. Be careful."

After she left, Rin lay back and closed his eyes. Through the bond, he felt Malachar's presence like a constant background hum.

"Tomorrow we face judgment," the demon lord observed.

"We've faced worse."

"True. But usually with swords involved. Politics is messier."

"Any advice?"

"Don't show weakness. Don't apologize for what you are. And if they try to remove you..." Malachar's presence sharpened. "Then we remind them exactly why they should fear a Nexus summoner."

Rin smiled grimly. "Let's hope it doesn't come to that."

But he had a feeling it would.

Somewhere in the academy shadows, Shade watched through his scrying portal and made final preparations. Tomorrow would determine everything.

The game was reaching its critical point.

And Rin Eldraven was the piece everyone wanted to control.
