The pulse of frost threw Wirasena backward against the corridor wall and knocked the nearest guard clean off his feet, and for one heart-stopping instant Rama couldn't see his daughter at all through the sudden blinding white. He drove forward through it anyway, arms outstretched, following the sound of her voice, that thin agonized cry still tearing out of her in her own register now, no trace of the layered alien tone left in it.
His hands found her small shoulders and he pulled her against his chest, shielding her from the worst of the frost with his own body, his System flaring bright with a warning he had never once seen it issue in seven years of graduated combat.
