Chapter 134: The Path of Light Part 1

The cave was bustling with activity. The surviving wildlings were packing their supplies.

Melisandre was tending to the fire while Bran sat in his weirwood chair… his eyes were closed, and his face looked serene.

Ghost and Summer lay at his feet, their red eyes watching the preparations with quiet intensity.

They had been here for nearly a week. Seven days of rest, of healing, of learning about his young brother's fate. Seven days of listening to Bran speak in that strange, distant voice that was not quite his own.

Jon approached his brother, his boots making crunching noises as he walked through the loose stones of the cave.

"Bran. We're almost ready."

Bran opened his eyes, and Jon felt a shiver run down his spine. Those eyes were not the eyes of the boy he had known. They were ancient and all-knowing, filled with a wisdom that seemed to stretch back thousands of years.

"Good," Bran said, his voice soft. "The longer we stay, the more danger we are in. The Night King already knows I am here. He has been searching for this place for centuries. He knows of my objective, and he will not rest until he finds me."

Jon felt a cold knot form in his stomach. "The Night King?"

"That's what my predecessor called him," Bran responded. "He is the first one, the oldest one; he is even more ancient than the Wall itself. He commands the Others and follows the will of its creator…to exterminate all life on the planet. And I am in its way."

Jon listened to Bran speak, but this person no longer felt like his little brother. "Is there anything left of my brother in there?"

Bran's expression flickered with something that might have been regret. "The knowledge of the Three-Eyed Raven came with a burden. Connecting with the Weirdwood network can flood your mind with millions of images. With knowledge of the past, present, and future. An experience like that is bound to change you. Dont you think, Jon?."

"I suppose…"

"But to answer your question…yes, Bran is still here." Bran tapped his chest. "And it is because of it that I care about what happens to you all, and why I will fight to prevent the darkness from winning."

Jon was silent for a long moment. "What do you need from me?"

Bran reached out and took his hand. "I need you to be brave, Jon. I need you to trust me. And I need you to find the Primordial Light."

Jon frowned. "The Primordial Light? You said it was the only thing that could stop the Ice Being. But where is it?"

Bran shook his head slowly, a shadow of frustration crossing his features. "That is the problem. I cannot see where it is. The Light is not in Westeros. My sight is tied to the weirwood trees…I can only see what they see, and their roots do not reach beyond these shores."

Jon's heart sank. "Then how do we find it? If you cannot see it, if it is not in Westeros..."

"I cannot see it," Bran said, "but I know someone who might know something."

Jon looked at his brother, hope flickering in his chest. "Who?"

"Joffrey Baratheon." Bran's voice was steady, certain. "He walked into the Shadow Lands and returned. He faced the Primordial Fire Being and survived. He carries magic from beyond this world…magic that I do not fully understand. If anyone knows where the Light is, it will be him."

Jon was silent for a moment, processing what he had just heard. "So we find Joffrey. We ask him about the Light. And then we find it."

"Yes." Bran squeezed his hand. "That is all I know, Jon. I know the Light is not here. I know it is the only thing that can save us. And I know that Joffrey is the key to finding it. That is enough to begin."

Jon nodded slowly, the weight of the task settling on his shoulders. "Then let's get started."

An hour later, Jon Snow stood at the entrance of the cave, his hand resting on Longclaw's pommel, his eyes fixed on the frozen world beyond.

'The Primordial Light,' Jon thought as Bran's words echoed in his mind. 'The only thing that can stop the Ice Being. And we are the ones who must find it.'

He had not slept well since Bran had told him the truth. The weight of his words felt like a burden he had never asked for but could not refuse. His brother had become something more than human. And now Jon had to find a way to save the world.

"You look like a man who's seen his own ghost."

Jon turned to find Kára approaching, her bow slung across her back, her grey eyes studying him with that sharp, assessing look she had worn since the day they met.

"Perhaps I have," Jon said, his voice flat. "Bran told me what's coming. What we have to face. It's going to be a dangerous journey." He sighed. "It will be a miracle if we're even to make it south of the wall."

Kára grunted, spitting into the snow. "Aye. The dead and their masters. We've known that for months. What else did he tell you?"

"That the world is ending. That there's a light that might save it. That Joffrey Baratheon might know where to find it." Jon shook his head slowly. "It's a lot to carry."

Kára snorted. "You're a Stark. You're supposed to carry it. That's what you lot do, isn't it? Carry the weight of the world while the rest of us freeze to death."

Jon almost smiled. "Something like that."

"Then stop moping and start walking," Kára said, turning away. "The dead won't wait for you to find your courage."

Jon watched her go and felt some strange warmth spreading through his chest. Yes, she was rough and blunt, but she was still here, fighting against the dead. She never gave up. And that was more than most could say.

"Kára," he called after her.

She stopped and looked back. "What?"

"Thank you. For staying with us."

Kára shrugged. "I stay because I have nowhere else to go. And because you promised me a life south of the Wall. Don't make me regret it."

The group was gathered right outside the ancient cave. The surviving wildlings, all five of them, stood with their bows and spears. Kára was at their head, her sharp eyes scanning the frozen landscape beyond.

Melisandre had packed her supplies. She carried a staff of carved wood, its top crowned with a shimmering ruby that seemed to pulse with inner fire.

And Bran, for the first time since Jon had found him, was standing.

It was a strange sight. Bran had been in the weirwood chair for so long that Jon had almost forgotten he could walk. But now he was on his feet, his legs steady beneath him, his eyes fixed on the path ahead.

"The Three-Eyed Raven's power is within me now," Bran said, as if reading Jon's thoughts. "I do not need the chair to see. I carry the sight with me wherever I go."

Jon nodded slowly. "And the children of the forest? They're not coming with us?. We could use their magic."

Bran shook his head. "They must remain here. The roots of the first weirwood tree are in this cave. They connect to the entire network…all the trees, all the memories, all the visions. If the White Walkers were to destroy this place, it would gravely weaken my sight. The children will seal the cave after we leave and protect it for as long as they can."

Jon looked back at the cave entrance. He could see Leaf standing in the shadows, her pale green face unreadable. She raised her hand in a gesture that might have been farewell.

"Thank you," Jon said, his voice soft. "For everything."

Leaf did not respond. She simply turned and disappeared into the darkness.

The long journey south began.

They left the dead forest behind and followed the Milkwater River. The snow was deep, reaching their knees in places, and the wind howled across the open plains with a cold that seemed to seep into their very bones.

Jon led the way, Ghost padding silently beside him. The direwolf's red eyes scanned the horizon, his ears swiveling to catch every sound.

Behind him were Kára and her wildlings moving in a loose formation to prevent an ambush.

Melisandre walked in the middle of the group. And at the rear, Bran walked with Summer; his eyes looked distant, and the dozens of ravens flying overhead confirmed why.

"The Shadow Tower," Bran said suddenly, his voice cutting through the silence. "That is where we must go. It is the westernmost castle of the Night's Watch. There is a secret passage there…a tunnel that goes beneath the Wall. I saw it in my visions. It is the safest route we can take."

Jon turned to look at his brother. "A secret passage? How do you know about it?"

"The Night's Watch built it centuries ago," Bran said. "They used it to send scouts beyond the Wall without being seen. But it was sealed when the Others began to grow in strength during the last Long Winter. Most of the men who knew about it are dead. The knowledge was lost…for most."

"For most but not you," Kára said, her voice flat. "You see everything, do you?"

"I see what the trees see," Bran said. "I see what the ravens see. I see what the dead see, when they are close to the trees. I see the past and the present. The future is... more difficult. It is always changing, always in motion. But there are constants. This is one of them. That is how I know it is the right path."

Kára grunted. "Strange, you Starks. All of you. But I suppose strange is what we need."

They traveled for three days, following the Milkwater River through the frozen wilderness. The landscape was harsh and unforgiving, a vast expanse of snow and ice that seemed to stretch to the ends of the earth.

The wildlings kept watch, their eyes constantly scanning the horizon for any sign of the dead. They had seen the army of wights at Hardhome, had watched their friends and family rise again as monsters. They knew what was coming, and they were determined to survive.

Melisandre spoke little, but when she did, her words were heavy with meaning. She spoke of the Lord of Light, of the battle between darkness and light, of the prophecies that had guided her across the sea.

Kára sat beside him, her bow across her lap. "She's strange, that one. The red woman."

"She's a priestess from the East," Jon said. "She serves the Lord of Light. She sees things in the flames."

Kára snorted. "Sees things in flames. Sounds like madness to me."

"Perhaps," Jon said. "But her abilities are real. I've seen what she can do." He recalled the day she had brought him back from the realm of the dead.

Kára was silent for a moment. Then she said, "I trust you, Jon Snow. That's enough for me."

On the fourth day, they saw the Shadow Tower in the distance.

It rose from the frozen earth like a spike made of black stone, its walls cracked and weathered by centuries of wind and snow.

The castle was mostly abandoned now, the Night's Watch having retreated to the eastern forts after the Others began to grow in strength. But the walls still stood, and somewhere beneath them, the secret passage waited.

"We're close," Bran said, his voice distant. "The tunnel entrance is on the north side of the castle. We just need to reach it."

Melissandre studied the tower. "It looks abandoned. No smoke from the fires. No movement on the walls. Is no one guarding it?"

"The Night's Watch was forced to abandon it years ago," Jon explained. "There is no one here to help us. And no one to hinder us."

They pressed forward, crossing the frozen plain that led to the castle. The snow was deeper here, reaching past their knees, and the wind howled across the open ground with a fury that seemed almost alive.

Kára's sharp eyes scanned the treeline. "Something's wrong. It's too quiet."

Jon felt it too. There was an unnatural stillness that had not been there before.

"They know we are here," Bran said, his voice barely a whisper. "They knew we were coming this way…and they have prepared for us."

Jon turned to his brother. "Where are they?. Can you see them?"

Bran's ancient eyes were distant, seeing something beyond the frozen landscape. "I can see them now. They are everywhere."
