The first thing I noticed was that nobody looked relieved.
That realization came the moment the door opened.
A healer entered quietly, followed by two assistants carrying bundles wrapped in soft silver blankets. The room should have felt lighter. It should have felt joyful. After everything that had happened, after the blood and the pain and the terror of nearly losing Kael, this should have been the moment everyone finally allowed themselves to breathe.
Instead, the atmosphere felt strange.
Not fearful.
Not exactly.
Uneasy.
The sensation settled over me immediately.
I pushed myself slightly higher against the pillows, ignoring the weakness still lingering in my body.
The healer noticed.
"My Lady, you should rest."
"I'll rest later."
My voice came out rougher than intended.
The healer hesitated.
