A soft knock came at the door.
"Fiona?" Caleb's voice was gentle. "Can I come in?"
She took a shaky breath.
"Yes."
He stepped inside, closing the door behind him. He didn't approach the bed immediately. He stood near the door, giving her space, his expression full of regret.
"I'm sorry," he said quietly. "I should have told you sooner. I was scared that if I revealed it too early, you would think I was just another powerful man trying to control your life. I wanted you to choose me for me… not because of what I own."
Fiona looked at him, her eyes still wet.
"I feel like such an idiot," she whispered. "All this time, I thought you were this steady, safe architect who was offering me an escape. Now I find out you're the one who dropped the bomb that made Voss panic. The one everyone thinks I helped."
Caleb took a cautious step closer.
